Chapter 1: The Descent
byThe notification appeared at exactly 3:47 PM on a Tuesday — the most mundane moment imaginable for the end of the world as we knew it.
Jake Chen stared at the translucent blue screen hovering in front of his face. He was sitting in his beaten-up Honda Civic in the parking lot of a 7-Eleven, halfway through a gas station burrito.
[SYSTEM INITIALIZATION DETECTED]
[WELCOME TO THE INFINITE DUNGEON]
[ALL INHABITANTS OF EARTH HAVE BEEN SELECTED AS PARTICIPANTS]
Around him, the parking lot erupted into chaos. People stumbled out of the convenience store, screaming.
[PARTICIPANT: JAKE CHEN]
[STATUS: UNCLASSED]
[UNIQUE TRAIT DETECTED… ANALYZING…]
[ERROR: TRAIT CLASSIFICATION FAILED]
[ASSIGNING TEMPORARY DESIGNATION: ???]
Jake had spent three years as a CS major before dropping out. The code, the algorithms, the elegant logic of programming — it had all made too much sense. And now the real world was dissolving around him.
The asphalt beneath his car began to glow with geometric patterns — hexagons and triangles interlocking like a circuit board. Everything it touched shimmered and changed. The sky turned a deep alien purple. Stars blazed in colors he had never seen before.
A massive projection materialized — a towering figure in dark robes with a face both beautiful and terrible.
[GREETINGS, PARTICIPANTS. I AM THE ADMINISTRATOR.]
[THE INFINITE DUNGEON HAS SELECTED YOUR WORLD FOR INTEGRATION.]
[THOSE WHO SURVIVE WILL BE GRANTED POWER BEYOND IMAGINATION.]
[THOSE WHO FAIL… WILL BE RECYCLED.]
Jake looked at the error message: [ERROR: TRAIT CLASSIFICATION FAILED]
For the first time in three years, Jake Chen smiled. Errors meant bugs. Bugs meant exploits. And exploits meant he could break the game.
[FLOOR 1 WILL COMMENCE IN: 00:59:59]
Jake cracked his knuckles. “Let us see what you are made of.”
