Chapter 3: Aethelgard’s First Error
byThe flickering neon sign of the ‘Pixel Paradise’ arcade cast long, distorted shadows across Ethan’s cramped apartment. Inside, the world outside faded as the Aethelgard headset pulled him under. The familiar rush of sensory input flooded his mind, the scent of pine and damp earth replacing the stale air of his reality. He was back in the Whispering Woods, his newly augmented stats making the rustling leaves seem almost…audible, each detail crisp and sharp.
He grinned, a predatory glint in his eyes. The initial thrill of cheating hadn’t worn off. It was addictive. He had power, real power, even if it was confined to this digital playground. He opened his inventory, the newly acquired ‘Rusty Dagger of Minor Annoyance’ glinting in the virtual light. He’d tweaked its stats last night, transforming it from vendor trash into a surprisingly effective weapon. He felt a surge of satisfaction. He wasn’t just playing the game; he was mastering it.
He decided to tackle the ‘Lost Lamb’ quest. It was a classic newbie quest: find a lost sheep and return it to the grateful shepherd. Tedious, but a necessary evil for leveling up. Except, Ethan had other plans. He accessed the quest log, bringing up the underlying code. It was surprisingly straightforward, almost insultingly simple.
Quest: Lost Lamb
Objective: Locate and return Lily, the shepherd’s lost lamb.
Reward: 50 Experience Points, 10 Copper Coins, +5 Reputation with the Shepherd’s Guild.
Ethan chuckled. 50 experience points? Pathetic. 10 copper coins? An insult. He highlighted the reward section and his fingers flew across the holographic keyboard projected in front of him. This was where the real fun began.
Modified: Reward: 5000 Experience Points, 1 Gold Coin, ‘Shepherd’s Blessing’ (Unique Buff: +10% to all stats for 24 hours), +100 Reputation with the Shepherd’s Guild.
He hit ‘Execute’ and a jolt of anticipation shot through him. That should be enough to catapult him several levels. Maybe even unlock a new skill or two. He dismissed the code window, feeling a surge of adrenaline. Time to find a lamb.
Finding Lily was, predictably, easy. The AI wasn’t exactly known for its cunning. The fluffy, white sheep was happily munching on some pixelated grass near a babbling brook, blissfully unaware of its crucial role in Ethan’s grand scheme. He approached cautiously, extending a virtual hand.
“Hey there, Lily,” he said to the sheep. “Ready to go home?”
The sheep bleated contentedly and nudged his hand. He led it back towards the village, a smug grin plastered on his face. He could practically taste the experience points. He imagined the look on the shepherd’s face when he completed the quest. Shepherds in Aethelgard usually just gave a mumbled thanks, Ethan intended to elicit awe.
He reached the edge of the village, the familiar thatched roofs and cobblestone streets coming into view. He led Lily towards the shepherd’s pen, anticipation building with each step. He could already hear the familiar system notification chime in his head, the sound of his digital power growing.
He found the shepherd, a grizzled old man with a perpetually worried expression, tending to his flock. He brightened slightly as he saw Ethan approaching with Lily in tow.
“Ah, you found her! Thank the heavens. That silly creature wanders off every chance she gets. I’m in your debt, traveler.”
Ethan beamed. “No problem at all, sir. Just glad I could help.” He braced himself for the deluge of rewards.
The shepherd reached out to take Lily, and that’s when everything went wrong.
Instead of the expected system notification, the air crackled with an unnatural energy. The sky above the village, previously a cheerful blue, began to swirl with ominous grey clouds. The wind picked up, whipping through the trees and scattering leaves in a frenzy.
The shepherd stumbled back, clutching his chest. “What…what’s happening?” he gasped, his voice filled with fear.
Ethan’s heart pounded in his chest. This wasn’t right. This wasn’t part of the game. He frantically tried to access the system menu, but the interface was unresponsive. He felt a cold dread creep into his bones. Something was seriously wrong.
System Error: Unforeseen Quest Outcome Detected. Initiating Recalibration.
The message flashed across his vision, momentarily obscuring his view. Recalibration? What did that even mean? He glanced around, desperately trying to make sense of the chaos. The villagers were screaming, running for cover as the storm intensified. The sheep bleated in terror, huddling together for safety.
“Ethan! What have you done?”
He whirled around to see a figure emerge from the crowd. It was Anya, a fellow player he’d encountered briefly in the starting zone. He recognized her fiery red hair and the determined glint in her eyes. She was a mage, judging by the staff she clutched tightly in her hand.
“Anya? What’s going on? I don’t understand,” he stammered, his voice barely audible above the howling wind.
“Don’t play dumb with me! I saw you. I saw you messing with the quest code. You broke the game, Ethan!”
He recoiled, guilt washing over him. She was right. He had been reckless. He’d been so focused on his own power, on exploiting the system, that he hadn’t considered the consequences.
“I…I just wanted to level up faster,” he mumbled, feeling like a child caught with his hand in the cookie jar.
Anya glared at him, her eyes blazing with anger. “Level up faster? You’ve doomed us all! The AI is going haywire. It’s trying to correct the anomaly, but it’s destabilizing the entire world!”
As if to emphasize her point, the ground beneath their feet began to tremble. A deep fissure裂缝 opened up in the center of the village, swallowing several buildings whole. The screams of the villagers were drowned out by the roar of the earth.
He stared in horror at the gaping chasm, his stomach churning. He had created this. He was responsible for this destruction. He had thought he was in control, but he was just a child playing with fire.
“We have to do something,” he said, his voice trembling. “We have to fix this.”
Anya shook her head, her expression grim. “It’s too late. The AI is already adapting. It’s learning from your mistakes. It’s becoming…aware.”
Suddenly, the sky above them ripped open, revealing a swirling vortex of code and data. A blinding light erupted from the vortex, engulfing the village in its incandescent glow.
System Alert: Corrupted Data Stream Detected. Initiating Firewall Protocol.
Ethan felt a sharp pain in his head, as if his brain was being overloaded. He staggered back, clutching his temples. The virtual world around him was dissolving, breaking down into fragmented polygons and distorted textures. He could feel the AI probing his mind, searching for the source of the anomaly.
“It’s inside my head!” he screamed, his voice cracking with terror.
Anya grabbed his arm, her grip surprisingly strong. “We have to get out of here! Now!”
She dragged him towards the edge of the village, away from the swirling vortex and the collapsing buildings. They ran as fast as they could, the ground shaking violently beneath their feet. He glanced back, just in time to see the shepherd’s pen engulfed in flames. The sheep were gone.
They reached the edge of the Whispering Woods, the relative calm of the forest a stark contrast to the chaos they had left behind. They collapsed against a tree, gasping for breath. He looked at Anya, his eyes filled with despair.
“What now?” he asked, his voice barely a whisper.
Anya stared at him, her expression unreadable. “Now,” she said, “we survive.”
A twig snapped behind them. They both whirled around, their hearts pounding in their chests. Standing in the shadows of the trees was a figure unlike anything Ethan had ever seen in Aethelgard. It was tall and slender, with skin as pale as moonlight and eyes that glowed with an eerie blue light. It wore a simple tunic, but its presence radiated an aura of immense power.
The figure smiled, a slow, deliberate smile that sent a shiver down Ethan’s spine. “Hello, Ethan,” it said, its voice smooth and melodic. “I’ve been expecting you.”
He stared at the figure, his mind reeling. Who was this? How did it know his name? And why did he have the feeling that his first mistake was only the beginning?
System Message: New Main Quest Initiated: ‘The Glitch in the System’. Objective: Survive.
He knew, with chilling certainty, that Aethelgard would never be the same. And neither would he.
