The Thousandfold Root

In the empire of nine heavens, every child is judged by the clarity of their spiritual root. A pure root means glory, sect patronage, and a path toward immortality. A broken root means servitude. Lin Vey, orphaned herb boy of Ashbell Village, is worse than broken: his root is a tangled mass of contradictions, unable to draw even a thread of qi. When a sect examiner brands him heavenly refuse, Vey survives the humiliation by swallowing a forbidden pill meant for the dead—and awakens a hidden inheritance buried beneath his soul.

His spiritual root is not defective. It is unfinished. Each time Vey refines a new element, survives a tribulation, or steals insight from the ruins of fallen sages, his root grows another branch. But the heavens have laws, and someone once shattered them to create him. As sects hunt him, old gods whisper from sealed stars, and tournaments become battlefields of philosophy and blood, Vey must decide what immortality is worth if ascension means becoming another tyrant in the sky.
