Chapter 15: Corrupted
by inkadminWhen the Devil Helfklik descended to the mortal realms, there was devastation. The city of Loklen was destroyed overnight, its defenders slain by the swarm that followed in the path of the Devil. The fifth oathsworn, Samde and his army were forced to descend upon the world, the energies flowing through him destroying the very land he walked on. The battle between the two divine beings and their armies tore ravines and toppled mountains. The sight of this devastation can be seen far to the north in the Loklen canyons where it’s said the battle of holy and unholy energies continues on.

The reaver’s body is crushed to the floor. Its legs spread out at odd angles. Whatever did this was brutal.
The rest of the delve team spreads out as we enter the room. There are two other entryways into the room, one is a stairway that goes down to the next floor, and the other goes off to the side. Shar said that path should lead to the rooms of the servants and apprentices of the archmage’s home.
Most of the slashed cocoons leak their grotesque contents to the floor, mixing with the contents of the broken eggs. My steps squelch with the gross mixture, but thankfully the smell isn’t actually too bad, being somewhat sweet and vinegary.
Tanya steps past me to examine the dead reaver, her stride showing a surprising amount of confidence. The three mercenaries move to the entrances to the room.
“Do you know what could’ve done this?” I ask Keve.
He looks away from a cocoon to look me in the eyes. He shakes his head.
One of the mercenaries waves to me. Daron points down the staircase to the next level. “Whatever it was, it came from down there.”
The door at the bottom lies on its hinges, the webs at the bottom slashed through.
I stare at the door for a moment before turning to the rest of the group. “We’re heading back up!”
I want to get all the artifacts back to camp and rest before we face whatever did this.
“Wait!” Tanya calls from the corpse. “I found something.”
I walk over to where she’s slowly pushing away one of the reaver’s legs. I kneel down to help her shove the dead appendage. With a cracking sound, the leg breaks off.
Tanya smiles widely at me as she points at what is barely peeking out from underneath the corpse.
Unbroken eggs.
“Can I have them? Please?”
I hesitate for only a second before nodding. “Grildor!” I call out to the older mercenary who is staring down the stairs with Daron. “We need some help moving the corpse.”
With the three of us, we manage to move the corpse and reveal roughly fifteen unbroken eggs.
Tanya coos with excitement as she examines the eggs, the vine on her neck twisting slightly. She touches one of the eggs, and the vines on her body brighten as mana flows through them, into the egg and back into her body. Before my eyes, the eggs disappear one by one. A white tattoo engraves itself into the back of the hand she touches the eggs with, depicting a circle made out of said eggs.
Tanya lets out a weary breath, then turns to leave. She freezes as she realizes that the rest of the party is watching her. “It’s my class.” She says.
“I guessed as much. Let’s get out of here.” I say.
The others seem just as eager as me to leave.
I motion everyone through the door ahead of me, then take one last look at the monster’s corpse.
I close the door slowly.
The trip back up is eerie, our raised guard causing the webbed walls and dead cocoons to create an unsettling atmosphere.
Still, nothing bothers us as we return to our camp. The shield from the artifact of protection snaps into place and Lorn steps out of his tent to greet us.
His face is pale, but he’s already looking a little better. I nod to him in greeting as I walk over to the rock-lizards. We gather around as everyone drops their stuff off and I start noting down the haul in my notebook.
The others move around, relaxing after the tenseness of the delve.
I close the notebook with a snap. “Hey Shar.” I stretch my back, hearing a pop. “How confident are you that you can find whatever is blocking our path?”
Shar lands in her crow form in front of me, tilting her head in question.
“I want to know if we should find a way around it or attempt to take it down.” I continue.
Shar nods, “I will see what I can do.” With that said, she jumps into the air and takes off back to the ruins.
I let out a sigh.
I wish we had the older mage with us to face whatever was down there.
I let everyone rest as we take a quick lunch, then it’s back into the depths. Shar meets us at the entrance to the webs. She flies onto the arm I hold up for her, her wings flapping lightly as she settles in.
“What’d you find?” I ask.
“A Corrupted Scorpion.”
There’s a collective gasp at the words, and my free hand moves to my sword.
“Could you tell the alignment?” I ask, motioning for the mercenaries to step closer.
“Earth is my best guess.” She answers.
I’ve never encountered one myself, but corrupted creatures are monsters that have been warped by mana. They’ll usually take on an alignment of magic, able to use spells normally reserved for mages of that type. I know enough to say that certain alignments are more dangerous than others, but I don’t know anything about the Earth alignment.
I look at Libby, “Can we kill it?”
Libby glances over our delving crew. Grildor gives her a nod, and she smiles,“Grildor can hold our defences. I’m worried about its armor, or its escape. I don’t like being surrounded by its element.” Her gaze lands on Keve and our resident mage. “Do either of you have a skill that can get through earth aligned plating?”
Keve shakes his head. “My flames are not strong enough.”
Eyla purses her lips, then nods her head, “I think I can.”
Libby shakes her head, “Mages.” She turns to me, “I’d feel more comfortable taking it head-on. I don’t want an earth aligned scorpion taking us by surprise.”
I nod my head in agreement.

Grildor takes point as we continue our path through the webs of the dead Reaver. We arrive at its cave, and walk past its corpse to the stairs leading to the next level.
Grildor shares a look with the rest of us as he lowers his heater shield. We spread out in preparation and make our way down the stairs and past the busted door. A large hall greets us, filled with broken cocoons and disturbed webs.
We’re greeted by an eerie rattling sound that fills the hall.
I step back, activating Hide Presence so that I can watch the fight and help if needed. I wouldn’t be able to do much without revealing my second class, but I’m confident in my delve team anyway.
What I’d first taken to be a mound of debris rises up, a nasty looking tail glistening with the tell-tale gleam of poison. The scorpion is larger than the reaver, and is covered in plates of hard rock.
The earth rumbles with the rattling, shaking under our feet. Then it stops.
The scorpion is fast as it appears before Grildor, but he’s ready for it as his shield meets the creature’s claws. A larger illusory shield covers our group, deflecting several spears of earth that follow up the physical attack.
Keve jumps past the defences, his swords glowing with fire, as he seeks the chinks in the scorpions armor. The screech of metal hitting stone echoes out as his swords leave small cuts in the stone of the scorpion.
The scorpion reaches for him, but he’s already gone in a streak of flames. There’s not much for me to do as Keve continues to attack the thing, Shar dives in and out of the shadows to further distract the scorpion, while Grildor holds position in front of us to stop the majority of its attacks.
Our attacks do nothing to the creature, but there’s a reason mages are feared.
Ice spreads over the ground from Eyla’s feet, covering the floor.
The scorpion lunges at Keve, only for a spear of ice to rise out of the frost in its path. The ice shatters against the earth plate on the scorpion’s chest, and I hear an annoyed sound come from Eyla.
The scorpion moves again, another spear of ice blocking its path.
It screams out, as this time, the spear punctures through and it struggles to free itself.
“Got you.” Eyla says. Spear after spear of ice form in the air around Eyla. They fire forward, each and every one of them aiming for the head of the scorpion. A wall of earth rises from the ground, blocking the first few before shattering under the onslaught. The ice punctures its eyes, digging deep into its brain.
It cries out, then collapses as more spears dig into it.
