    Chapter 15

    The New Normal

    The weeks after the filing passed the way good weeks do — without anyone noticing they were good until they were already gone.

    The provincial court accepted the consolidated case. Letters went back and forth between Millhaven and the capital. Sera managed the correspondence brick by methodical brick, and if Harwick’s lawyers wrote something she didn’t like, she wrote something back that was worse. Roen read one of her responses over her shoulder and decided he was grateful she’d never turned that precision on him. Not yet, anyway.

    The inn changed in the small ways that meant it was growing.

    Roen hired Bess, a local woman who had skin the colour of polished mahogany with rich copper undertones, broad shoulders, and no tolerance for nonsense, to help in the kitchen. She’d shown up one morning asking if there was work, looked at the stack of dishes in the basin, and said “I can start now if you want” — she was already rolling up her sleeves before Roen answered. She was a decent cook, a better cleaner, and she hummed folk songs while she worked that Roen hadn’t heard in two hundred years. The first time he’d recognised one — a fishing tune from a coastal village three valleys over from where he’d grown up — he’d nearly stopped breathing. Bess had noticed. “Know this old song?” she’d asked, casually, the way you’d ask about the weather. He’d nodded. She’d kept humming. She had not asked him how he knew it. He had loved her, slightly, for that.

    The trade board had been expanded to two panels. Sera’s ledger was on its third volume. Merchants from as far as Helmsward and the river towns were detouring through Millhaven now, not for the crossroads but for the Compass — for Sera’s introductions, for the ale, for the food that had developed a reputation Roen found both flattering and inconvenient. He didn’t want to be famous. Famous innkeepers got visitors, and visitors asked questions.

    But he was cooking differently now and he couldn’t stop himself.

    A smoked fish with pepper glaze that made Torben go silent for a full minute. A lamb and root vegetable stew with the Vaelthorne spice blend that a northern merchant tried to buy three times before giving up. Pickled vegetables using a fermentation technique from a civilisation that wouldn’t exist for another century. Each dish was a window into a life he couldn’t explain, and every time someone asked where he’d learned a recipe, he said “a…book” and changed the subject. The northern merchant hadn’t believed him. “No book teaches you to do that with juniper,” the man had said. Sera, from her table: “Don’t bother. I’ve tried.” The merchant left empty-handed. Roen had enjoyed that more than he should have.

    Sera had stopped asking. She’d replaced the question with a look — the one that said I know you’re lying and I’m choosing not to push — and then she’d eat whatever he’d made and close her eyes for a second and not say anything. That was worse than the questions. The questions he could deflect. The silence he couldn’t.

    Things between them had shifted since the conversation. Not dramatically — they still worked the same way, still ran the inn together, still argued about pantry organisation and how much to charge for the evening stew. But there was a new layer underneath. A steadiness that hadn’t been there before, like the ground had settled after a long tremor. She touched him more casually now — a hand on his arm when passing behind the bar, standing closer than the space required when they checked the ledger together. Not performing. Just not pretending she didn’t want to be near him.

    Roen made her breakfast differently now.

    Small adjustments she hadn’t asked for and probably thought he didn’t notice her noticing. Extra honey in her tea — three teaspoons, the way she liked it, even though she’d never said so. The bread sliced thinner because she ate faster that way and was always in a hurry in the morning. The eggs cooked a half-minute longer because she didn’t like them runny but would never say so. He’d been learning her preferences the way he’d learned recipes — through observation, not conversation — and the knowledge had accumulated into something that felt dangerously close to care.

    The coffee, he kept making while the beans lasted. He found another trader at the end of the second week — a woman from the same coastal route who carried twice the stock at a slightly lower price. He bought her entire supply too. Sera saw the new sack come in and gave him a look that contained no words and several paragraphs of approval. She did not enter the expense in the ledger under questionable this time. She entered it under operations. That, Roen suspected, was the highest accounting honour she could bestow on anything.

    Milo was different.

    Still sharp, still proud, still argumentative when he felt like it. But settled in a way he hadn’t been a month ago. His shirt fit now — Sera had taken him to the market and he’d come back with clothes that actually belonged to him instead of hand-me-downs two sizes too big. He read at the bar every afternoon, working through the trader’s almanac and then a history of Solmere’s commercial law that Sera had found somewhere and left on the counter without comment. He and Sera had developed a shorthand — she’d call out a number, he’d finish the calculation. They argued less. When they did, it sounded like family.

    He was still going home most nights, but he came to the inn every morning by ten and didn’t leave until after dark. Some nights, when the road felt wrong or when he was just tired, he stayed in the spare room without asking. Roen had stopped commenting on it. The room was Milo’s now in everything but name.

    Brick came with him. The goat had claimed a spot in the garden where the rosemary met the frostmint and defended it against all comers, including Bess, who had tried to shoo him once and received a headbutt to the thigh that she took personally. She and Brick had been in a cold war ever since. Roen stayed neutral. Bess had a long memory and Brick had a hard skull, and Roen had no intention of being caught in the middle of either.

    Garren had started coming most evenings now, not just when he had news. He’d sit at the end of the bar and drink slowly and trade stories with whoever was next to him — usually Torben, sometimes a merchant passing through, once a pair of travelling minstrels who made the mistake of asking Garren about his leg and received a forty-minute tactical account of the engagement where he’d injured it. The minstrels left before dessert. He did not notice.

    Today Milo was behind the bar, which was new. He’d asked Roen to teach him to pour ale properly, and Milo asking for things was rare enough that Roen treated each request like a small miracle.

    “You’re pouring too fast,” Roen said.

    “I’m pouring at a normal speed. Your standard is insane.”

    “The foam matters.”

    “It’s ale. It all tastes the same once it hits your stomach.”

    “That’s the most offensive thing you’ve ever said to me.”

    Sera, from her table, without looking up: “The foam does matter. The regulars notice.”

    Milo looked betrayed. “You’re taking his side?”

    “I’m taking the side of not losing customers because their ale looks wrong.”

    “I liked it better when you two argued with each other instead of ganging up on me.”

    He poured again. Slower. The foam settled correctly. A clean white head, the colour of fresh cream, with the deep amber of the ale glowing through the glass beneath it. He stared at it like it had personally wronged him.

    “Happy?”

    “It’s acceptable,” Roen said.

    “High praise from the man who considers not terrible a compliment.”

    From the kitchen, Bess laughed. She’d been listening to these exchanges for a week and had decided they were better entertainment than anything the market square offered. Her laugh made the pots on their hooks ring slightly — broad, unembarrassed, the laugh of a woman who had raised three children and run out of patience for being polite about anything that genuinely amused her.

    The afternoon was winding down when Milo decided to cook.

    Roen was out back checking the garden. Sera was at her table. Bess had gone home for the day. By the time Roen smelled smoke, it was already too late to prevent what was well underway.

    He came through the kitchen door to find Milo standing over the stove with a pan of what had recently been eggs and was now a blackened, smoking disc of regret. The air was thick and grey, the kind of grey that smelled distinctly of seasoning that should never have been near a pan. Milo’s face was a composition of guilt, defiance, and genuine confusion about how things had gone so wrong so fast.
