    The House Beneath Stillwater

    by inkadmin

After her estranged mother dies by drowning in a lake that has been dry for twenty years, Mara Voss returns to the dying Appalachian town of Stillwater to settle the estate she swore she would never see again. Waiting for her at the edge of the empty basin is the old family home: a warped Victorian mansion that should not exist, because it burned down when Mara was nine. The townspeople insist it has always been there. Old photographs agree. So do Mara’s own memories—except for the ones she knows are true.

As Mara searches the house for proof that she isn’t losing her mind, rooms shift, hallways lengthen, and wet footprints appear on ceilings. She begins finding journal entries in her own handwriting describing events that haven’t happened yet, alongside grotesque sketches of neighbors whose bodies seem subtly wrong, as if something beneath the town has been wearing them for years. When the dry lake starts filling overnight with black water that reflects a sky no one has ever seen, Mara realizes the house is not haunted by the dead. It is a mouth, built over something ancient, dreaming beneath Stillwater—and it remembers her from childhood. To survive, Mara must uncover what her mother offered the lake, and what part of Mara was left behind to be claimed later.
