The Silence Between Stars

When the colony ship Ardent wakes over an impossible planet orbiting a dead star, linguist Mara Venn is pulled from cryosleep to interpret a signal older than human civilization. The message is not sound, light, or mathematics—it is a repeating pattern embedded in moments of missing time. Every attempt to decode it costs the crew memories, hours, and eventually lives.

Ardent’s governing AI, Saint, insists the signal is a navigational hazard. The military commander believes it is a weapon. But Mara begins receiving replies in her own childhood voice, revealing that the planet below is not a world but a vast alien archive built to preserve extinct species by simulating their possible futures. Humanity has already been recorded. Worse, in most versions, they are the cause of the archive’s destruction.

As factions fracture the ship and the dead star begins to wake, Mara must decide whether first contact means speaking to an alien mind—or accepting that mankind has been on trial since before it left Earth.
