    ## Chapter 2: Seven Breaths to the Rail

    At first bell, Rowan wagered five years on a device that could be removed in ten seconds.

    The bell’s last vibration clung to the chained certification hall while the commissioned clerk read the terms into the record. If Rowan damaged the apparatus, changed its sealed path, or introduced a false return, he would be excluded from challenge proceedings for five years. If his prediction failed, the original result would stand. His Second Grade would remain unchanged, his spent examination fee would remain attached to that failed result, and nothing attempted that morning could support a later appeal.

    Rowan listened without interruption.

    The apparatus waited behind the marked boundary, its controls locked beneath Registry wax. The empty candidate rail extended from the lower casing toward the isolated station. On the examination table lay Rowan’s inert matched load, a copper bypass, a grounded capture cradle, and the few tools permitted under challenge rules.

    The clerk checked each seal against the morning register. He studied the impressions around their edges, then tested the wax covering the fresh cut Rowan had discovered near the grounding throat.

    Nothing had lifted. Nothing had broken.

    The chief examiner placed Rowan’s load on the balance opposite the archived correction bar. The beam dipped and returned to level.

    “Equal mass.”

    The clerk recorded it.

    Tests at three approved points placed the alloy within tolerance. A resonance probe passed around the load without stirring.

    “Equal alloy,” the examiner said. “No stored resonance.”

    Only after those findings entered the record did Rowan receive permission to install the bypass.

    He lifted the copper piece by its insulated grip. One padded clamp settled against an approved outer contact near the apparatus throat; the other connected to the grounded capture cradle. Neither crossed a sealed boundary. Two withdrawal pins held the connection in place. Pulling either would drop the bypass clear and restore the original path without opening the machine.

    The clerk crouched beside the lower clamp and slid a thin gauge through the visible gap.

    “No contact beneath the seal,” Rowan said.

    “I will determine that.”

    The clerk repeated the check from the opposite side. The chief examiner tested both withdrawal pins, then examined the bright candidate rail.

    “Rail isolated.”

    “And unoccupied,” Rowan said. “Evidence need not bite anyone.”

    The chief examiner looked toward the empty station. “Enter the prediction.”

    Rowan stepped behind the boundary and kept both hands visible.

    “Five impulses will enter. The immediate official reading will show four. The missing impulse will follow the sealed lower path and reach the capture cradle on the seventh breath.”

    “In what sequence?” the clerk asked.

    “Two hard contacts close together. One empty division. A strong third, then a weaker fourth. Two empty divisions. A fifth matching the third.”

    The clerk wrote down every interval and relative strength. He turned the page for the examiner to inspect, sanded the ink, and waited for it to dry.

    “Prediction entered.”

    The chief examiner crossed to the release lever. The matched load rested at the top of its track, connected to Rowan’s arrangement only through the sealed apparatus.

    “Stand clear.”

    He released it.

    Two hard contacts struck close together. The official dial jumped twice.

    One division passed empty.

    A strong third blow landed, followed by a weaker fourth. After two more divisions, the fifth contact struck with the same force as the third.

    The load settled into its stop.

    Four marks appeared on the official dial.

    The first pair stood close and deep. A one-division gap preceded the third, and the weaker fourth followed it. Beyond that, the needle remained inside the failure band.

    No fifth mark appeared.

    The clerk’s pen touched the timing sheet. “Immediate reading: four.”

    “Failure band,” the chief examiner confirmed.

    The clerk raised one finger and began counting breaths.

    On the first, the grounding strip darkened near the throat. Thin branches spread across its surface and stopped at an invisible edge.

    The official dial did not move.

    The second breath passed without a mark in the capture cradle.

    During the third, a faint buzz entered the lower casing. Rowan felt it through the floor before the sound became clear enough to hear.

    The examiner turned toward the sealed panel.

    “No bypass contact beneath the wax,” the clerk said.

    “None visible,” the examiner replied.

    On the fourth breath, the wax above the fresh cut grew glossy with heat. It neither cracked nor lifted. Warmth was rising from within a path that should have discharged at once.

    The clerk wrote the observation without looking away.

    The fifth breath ended with the cradle strip blank and the candidate rail untouched.

    Rowan kept his hands at his sides. If nothing arrived, the official reading would remain the only reading. He had chosen a prediction precise enough to close his own challenge.

    On the sixth breath, pale blue light crept from the grounding throat.

    It followed the copper bypass rather than leaping toward the candidate rail. The line advanced slowly, trembling over the approved contacts until it reached the upper clamp.

    The chief examiner moved half a step nearer.

    “Do not touch it,” the clerk said.

    “I do not intend to.”
