Mara woke to grey morning, bitter willow on her tongue, and the offensive discovery that Tamsin had been right.

    She had slept.

The proof was arranged with unnecessary thoroughness: the hearth ash had settled undisturbed, the candle beside her bed had burned down by two marked divisions, and Tamsin had signed both observations across the treatment register. Mara had apparently remained unconscious for one hour and forty-three minutes, which was long enough to qualify as recovery and short enough to feel like theft.

Her left hand lay newly bandaged on a folded blanket. The wrist above it remained numb. When she shifted, her knee warned her against ambition.

Across the room, Tamsin tightened the final wrap around Caelan’s ribs.

He sat bare to the waist in the grey light, one arm raised only as far as permitted. Drying sleet darkened the hem of his discarded shirt. The cold-damaged fingers of his right hand had been salved and separately bound.

“If either of you tears another dressing,” Tamsin said, “I will classify the investigation as a shared delusion and prescribe silence.”

Caelan glanced at Mara. “Can she do that?”

“She controls the willow,” Mara said. “Her jurisdiction is functionally absolute.”

    Tamsin handed her another cup.

Mara drank because some defeats became worse when appealed.

Only after Caelan’s shirt was restored and Mara’s pulse examined did Tamsin unlock the evidence chest. She retained the key on a chain around her wrist and set four sealed packets on the worktable, followed by two narrow timing slips.

Mara remained in the chair beside the bed. Tamsin had placed it far enough from the reader that reaching the controls would require standing. The arrangement was insulting, effective, and therefore difficult to criticize.

    “Inventory first,” Mara said.

Tamsin opened the outer custody register, not the evidence.

“Gate Three printed service-position legend,” she read. “Issued 14 First Frost, six years ago. Annex press mark intact. Withdrawn copy obtained from the sealed governor file.”

She turned the packet so Mara and Caelan could see the date, press impression, and linked custody signatures.

“Routine servicing receipt leaf. Entries dated 6 and 8 Deepwinter, four years ago. Two completed divided-stem ciphers. Released from Cobalt Bench Group Four under joint seal.”

The third packet contained a single yellowed form.

“Obsolete interrupted-service example. Dated 19 Longnight, eleven years ago. Territorial position deliberately vacant. Distribution notation present; recipient schedule absent from this custody set.”

That absence was not evidence of identity, but it was a future question with sharp edges. Mara had Tamsin record it without speculation.

The final packet held the countermarked Gate Three replay.

Tamsin then displayed the timing slips: Packet 1187’s route receipt, generated independently by the route drum at 11:27, and an isolated Station Nine acceptance receipt taken from its mechanical response layer at 11:32. Each bore a different mechanism’s countermark and an unbroken custody chain.

    “Nothing interpreted yet,” Mara said.

    “An admirable novelty,” Caelan murmured.

She looked at him. “Sleep has made me reckless.”

Tamsin broke the linked observation seal on the printed legend and fixed it beneath the reader. The instrument key never left her hand.

Four positions were printed beside a schematic divided-stem cipher.

    ROUTE BED.

    OFFICER AUTHORITY.

    TERRITORIAL WITNESS ASSENT.

    SERVICE CLOSURE.

Below the fourth label, smaller type stated: CLOSURE CERTIFIES MACHINE READABILITY ONLY. IT DOES NOT SUPPLY A VACANT AUTHORITY OR ASSENT.

Mara read the sentence twice before allowing Tamsin to copy it into the comparison record.

    The routine leaf came next.

Its first completed cipher showed a lower curl seated into the route line, an officer stroke occupying one side of the divided stem, and a distinct territorial stroke filling the reserved opposite side. Only after those three positions had been laid did the terminal service hook cross the structure.

The second cipher differed in hand and pressure but not arrangement. Route bed. Officer authority. Separate territorial assent. Machine closure last.

“The visible components are three,” Mara dictated. “The functions are four. The divided stem contains two independently supplied positions.”

Caelan leaned forward, then stopped when Tamsin looked at his ribs.

“The service hook crosses both authorities,” he said.

“In both ordinary examples,” Mara replied. “We may record that it follows them. We may not yet record what happens if one is absent.”

Tamsin replaced the leaf with the obsolete example.

Its route curl and officer stroke were intact. The territorial half of the stem ended in a clean reserved space. No torn fibers, scraping, heat bloom, or erasure disturbed it.

More importantly, the terminal hook had not been applied.

A printed servicing notation beside the cipher read: HOLD OPEN—TERRITORIAL POSITION VACANT. CLOSURE PROHIBITED.

There was no need for memory, rank, or inspired interpretation. The old form said what the machine had been required to do.

Mara felt the conclusion settle into place and refused to speak it until Tamsin aligned the three sources side by side.

“The fixed rule is established,” she said then. “Vacancy remains vacancy. It is not reassigned to the officer or service positions. A servicing credential may certify readability only after territorial assent exists. It may not become that assent.”

Caelan studied the obsolete form. “Someone using Packet 1187’s structure had access to a discontinued arrangement.”

“Possibly to the form, possibly to training derived from it,” Mara said. “We do not yet know which.”

Tamsin recorded the distinction and resealed the three references under linked restricted custody.

Only then did she open the replay’s observation cover.

Packet 1187’s cipher appeared beneath the lens. With the governing positions already established, its structure no longer invited guesswork.
