    Chapter Index

In the aftermath of Wei Chen’s flashy breakthrough, the sect continues its meteoric rise. That motivation spreads among the disciples: the pills work, the training works, growth is possible. Morale surges. The weights feel lighter. The forms feel sharper. Even Jun, the perpetual cynic, starts smiling during practice.

Mei Lin’s herb garden produces its first real harvest; enough healing herbs to stock our infirmary and start trading with Greenstone Town. Wei Chen, newly invigorated, volunteers for extra missions. The mine hits thirty-five stones in a week.

And at the center of it all, Ling’er waits.

She trains with the others, leads body refinement, helps with techniques. She’s patient, steady, ready. Every night, she tells me the same thing: “Not yet, Master. Almost. But not yet.”

The door is open. She can feel it. She’s choosing not to walk through until everything is perfect.

Near the end of the week, it’s time.

She sits in my quarters, meditating. The weights are off for the first time in two weeks—I wanted her to feel the difference. She sits cross-legged on her usual mat, hands resting on her knees, breathing slow and deep.

When she opens her eyes, they’re calm, clear, and impossibly deep.

“Master. I’m ready.” Her voice is steady. “The foundation is perfect. All elements balanced. All techniques integrated. The door is open. Waiting.”

I look at her with the Gaze.

    Ling’er – Breakthrough Readiness Assessment

    Elemental Balance:

    Fire: 98% → 99%

    Water: 93% → 96%

    Earth: 90% → 94%

    Wood: 91% → 95%

    Metal: 87% → 92%

Verdict: Her foundation is perfect. There is nothing left to learn at this realm. She is ready.

    I nod. “Let’s go.”

We go to the tomb, deep underground. Hidden by ancient formations layered with new ones, safe from prying eyes. The skeleton watches from its platform as Ling’er settles into meditation, her small form barely disturbing the dust. I give her two Foundation Establishment pills. She takes them without hesitation. The pills dissolve on her tongue, and she closes her eyes. The reaction is immediate and terrifying.

Qi floods the chamber from everywhere at once, drawn by her dantian’s hunger. The air itself seems to thin, to compress, to strain. Dust rises from the floor. The skeleton’s bones rattle slightly. I have to brace myself against the wall, steadying myself against the pull. Ling’er’s body glows. Gold from the dragon blood, silver from the cosmic bone, five colors from the elements cycling within her. Her meridians, already eight of eight primary, now force open all eight secondary. Her dantian, already three times normal size, expands to five. I wait patiently, watching. My own breakthrough to Foundation Establishment took about an hour, with no glamorous light, no rattling bones, no qi flood. Just a quiet shift, a settling, a sense of finally.

This is nothing like that. The Gaze updates in real time. I try to ignore it, but it refuses to stop. Line after line appears in my vision, each one more absurd than the last.

Breakthrough Progress: 15% – Meridian expansion stable. Secondary pathways opening.
Breakthrough Progress: 30% – Dantian capacity exceeded projections. Now 4x normal.

I blink. Four times normal? She was already at three.

Breakthrough Progress: 45% – Elemental balance spiking. Fire affinity at 100%. Water at 97%. Earth at 95%. Wood at 96%. Metal at 94%.

I sit down. This is unusual. Very unusual.

Breakthrough Progress: 60% – Bloodline response detected. Dragon blood accelerating process by 1200%.

Twelve hundred percent. I don’t even know what that means.

Breakthrough Progress: 75% – Cosmic bone resonance detected. Tertiary meridians beginning to open. This should not happen at Foundation Establishment.

By the fifth update, I’m just sitting there, reading increasingly alarmed notifications like a man watching his bank account drain.

WARNING: Spiritual energy density exceeds containment parameters. Concealment array straining.

WARNING: Concealment array node failing. Recommend immediate replacement.

A crack appears somewhere in the chamber wall. Frost forms on the skeleton’s robes—Elder Frostheart’s final rest disturbed by the sheer energy output of a twelve-year-old. One of the spirit stones powering the concealment array pops out of its socket like a thrown cork, clattering across the floor.

I get up calmly, walk to the array, and replace the stone. The Gaze continues.

    WARNING: Secondary node failing. Recommend—

    I replace that one too.

Breakthrough Progress: 85% – Foundation forming. Structure appears to be non-standard. Five-element foundation detected. Each element forming a separate pillar. Interlocking configuration.

I pause at that. Five pillars. Interlocking. That’s not how Foundation Establishment works. Foundation Establishment is supposed to be a foundation; singular, solid, stable. A base for everything that comes after.

    She’s building something else.

Breakthrough Progress: 95% – Pillar integration complete. Foundation strength: 8x normal.

Elder Frostheart’s bones rattle more insistently. Dust shakes from the ceiling. Another spirit stone pops. I replace it without looking away from Ling’er.

Breakthrough Progress: 100% – Breakthrough complete.

    Three hours have passed.

    She opens her eyes.

“Master.” Her voice is different, resonating within the tomb’s walls.. “I understand now. The realms. The path. What I need to become.”

I stare at her. At this child who just spent three hours rearranging the fundamental laws of cultivation.

    Ling’er – Breakthrough Result

    Earth: 94% → 97%

    Wood: 95% → 97%

    Metal: 92% → 96%

Meridians: All 8 primary, all 8 secondary, 2 of 8 tertiary opening (should not happen until Core Formation)

Dantian Capacity: 5x normal Foundation Establishment

I look at her, trying to form the question. “Your… foundation is made of five interlocking pillars. What does that mean? I know my own foundation—”

I close my eyes, reaching inward. Forty years of cultivation, forty years of slow accumulation, of steady effort. My foundation is like a large oak, deeply rooted, far from perfect but resilient. It’s served me well enough. “I can perceive it. A single trunk. Solid. Simple.”

She nods, understanding the question even before I finish. “It’s hard to explain. My foundation isn’t one pillar. It’s five.”

She hesitates. “I could show you. If you want. It might be easier than explaining.”

Ling’er reaches out and takes my hand.
