The House Beneath Stillwater Lake

When Mara Voss returns to the drowned mining town of Stillwater to catalog artifacts before the reservoir is drained, she expects rot, mud, and old grief. Instead, she finds a house standing intact on the lakebed where no house should be. Its windows glow after sunset. Its front door is always unlocked. And every room seems arranged for people who vanished decades ago—including Mara’s mother, who disappeared there when Mara was six.

As Mara and a small salvage crew begin exploring the impossible structure, the house starts learning them. Hallways lengthen. Walls breathe. Water runs from dry taps carrying whispers in familiar voices. Crew members emerge from locked rooms with memories that do not belong to them, while Mara begins losing hours and waking with silt beneath her fingernails. The deeper she goes, the more she suspects Stillwater was never flooded to bury a tragedy, but to contain something ancient sleeping beneath it—something that builds homes from memory, grief, and bone. And it has been waiting for Mara to come back and finally open the door at the bottom of the basement stairs.
