Chapter 4: Going Colonial
byThe Tier 2 evolution options materialized in Andy’s awareness with the deliberate pacing of a game show host opening envelopes, and Andy, who had no eyelids to blink or breath to hold, simply floated and read.
[TIER 2 EVOLUTION: COLONIAL ORGANISM]
[YOU WILL TRANSITION FROM A SINGLE-CELLED ORGANISM TO A MULTI-CELLULAR COLONY. YOUR CONSCIOUSNESS WILL INHABIT THE PRIMARY CELL. SECONDARY CELLS WILL OPERATE AUTONOMOUSLY UNDER YOUR GENERAL DIRECTION.]
[CHOOSE YOUR COLONY TYPE:]
[1. PORIFERA-TYPE (SPONGE)] – Sessile filter-feeding colony. Attach to a surface and draw nutrients from water flow. High passive income. Extremely durable. Cannot relocate once established. Opens paths toward: Reef organisms, Sessile megafauna, Coral networks.
[2. CNIDARIAN-TYPE (JELLYFISH)] – Mobile predatory colony. Free-swimming with stinging tentacles and a rudimentary nerve net. Active hunting capability retained. First sensory upgrade: basic tactile awareness. Opens paths toward: Pelagic predators, Tentacled fauna, Marine hunters.
[3. ANNELID-TYPE (WORM)] – Burrowing colony. Segmented body plan optimized for substrate navigation. Excellent environmental resistance. Moderate speed. Opens paths toward: Terrestrial invertebrates, Segmented fauna, Subterranean organisms.
Andy read the options once, then twice, then a third time with the focused intensity of a man comparing apartment listings, which was an apt comparison because he was essentially choosing where and how to live for the entire next phase of his existence and the lease was, per the System’s cheerful reminder, permanent.
The sponge was the passive income build. Attach to a rock, filter nutrients, let the XP roll in. The Cookie Clicker approach to biological existence. Safe, reliable, and so boring it would drive him insane within four hours. Also, sessile. Immobile. Rooted to one spot forever. The evolutionary equivalent of early retirement at twenty-four, and given that his actual life had ended at twenty-four, he felt he was owed a more dynamic second act.
The worm was the survivalist build. Tough, burrowing, resilient. But “subterranean” gave him pause. Andy Snodgrass had not died on a crosswalk and reincarnated as pond scum to spend his second life underground.
And then there was the jellyfish.
Mobile. Predatory. Free-swimming with stinging tentacles. Active hunting retained, which meant his horn and his moves carried forward. And a rudimentary nerve net, which meant a nervous system. Sensory upgrade. Basic tactile awareness.
He would be able to feel things.
Not the crude chemical-gradient way he currently perceived the world, but actually, physically feel. Touch. Warmth. Pressure. The difference between warm and cold experienced not as a metabolic calculation but as an actual sensation.
Andy had not felt anything since dying. The perceptions of prokaryotic life were information, not experience. Like reading a restaurant review instead of eating the food. The jellyfish option promised something closer to eating the food, and the fact that the food was “temperature gradients in primordial water” instead of “Megan’s cooking” (she made a very good pasta, simple but good, the kind of cooking that was confident rather than fancy) was beside the point. Sensation was sensation, and he had been without it for what felt like a very long time.
The paths were all aquatic, which meant another tier in the water, but that was fine. The foggy tier-preview showed Tier 3 branching in multiple directions, and one pointed toward land. The amphibian bridge. The exit ramp from ocean to shore.
He didn’t need to get there today. He just needed to keep moving forward, and the jellyfish moved.
Plus: tentacles. He was going to have tentacles. Four of them. And a horn. A horny organism with four flexible appendages and a stinger. If someone was writing the story of his life, they were definitely doing it on purpose at this point.
He selected Cnidarian-Type.
[CNIDARIAN-TYPE (JELLYFISH): SELECTED]
[INITIATING TIER 2 EVOLUTION…]
[WARNING: THIS PROCESS WILL TEMPORARILY DISABLE ALL CURRENT ABILITIES WHILE YOUR ORGANISM RESTRUCTURES. ESTIMATED DURATION: VARIABLE.]
[PLEASE REMAIN STATIONARY.]
“Remain stationary.” Sure. He’d cancel all his appointments. The humor dried up fast when the restructuring began and every biological process in his body ground to a halt simultaneously.
If you come across this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.
It was not painful. Pain required nerve cells, which he did not yet have. Convenient timing. What it was, was disorienting: his senses went dark, his membrane stopped responding, his whole body churning with energy as it reorganized from the inside out.
The System provided updates:
[CELL DIVISION INITIATED: PRIMARY CELL REPLICATING]
[DAUGHTER CELLS: 2… 4… 8… 16…]
[CELL SPECIALIZATION BEGINNING]
[ASSIGNING CELL TYPES: EPITHELIAL, MUSCULAR, NEURAL, CNIDOCYTE…]
He was multiplying. Nothing like the binary fission that produced a single non-sentient copy and two XP. This was his one cell becoming many, dozens then hundreds, each one splitting and specializing, the System constructing a body plan around his consciousness like a house being built around a person standing in the foundation.
The neural cells came online first. Tiny sparks of activity connecting to his awareness the way peripherals connect to a computer. One nerve cell. Then a cluster. Then a network stretching across his expanding body like telephone wires strung between newly built houses.
He felt the water.
