Chapter 17: Mid-Tier Evolution: Going Magical

The notification arrived on a Tuesday.

Andy knew it was a Tuesday because the ranger visited every day except Tuesdays and Thursdays (he had learned to track the gaps because the days without her felt longer and he was not going to examine why), and she was absent, and the fox was napping, and Andy was running the downhill ridge trail at eighty-six percent gallop efficiency when the bold text appeared.

A branch point. A specialization within Tier 4, since Tier 5 was at 1000 XP and he was at three hundred and twelve. A refinement. An upgrade to the existing model rather than a replacement.

Andy slowed to a walk and found a shaded spot beneath a broad-canopied tree.

He read the options.

Andy read option two three times. Then read the note a fourth time.

Required. Not “compatible with.” Not “may lead to.” Required. The System was standing at the trailhead with a sign that said “UNICORN: THIS WAY” in letters so large that misreading them would require a commitment to self-deception that Andy did not possess.

But the path had a new requirement.

Purity Affinity. The System tracked Purity as a stat. Somewhere in the invisible spreadsheet governing his entire second life, there was a value assigned to the concept of his purity. Andy had a sinking feeling he knew exactly what that value was based on.

“What is Purity Affinity?” Andy thought, with the weary resignation of a man who had asked the System four hundred questions and received useful answers to three of them.

An answer. An actual answer, with content and definition and a threshold specification, and Andy was so surprised by the System’s uncharacteristic helpfulness that he almost missed the next notification, which arrived half a second later with the timing of a punchline.

The System had been watching him be nice to things. Across all four tiers. And counting it. The photosynthetic colony he had protected as a jellyfish. The insects he had thanked silently for their XP. The fox. The ranger he had let touch his horn. The persistent, stubbornly human tendency to care about things even when treating them as resources would have been easier.

The System had been keeping score.

Andy stared at the notification the way a person stares at a traffic ticket they know they deserve but still find personally offensive.

His virginity. The thing he had been embarrassed about his entire human life. The thing he had been actively trying to resolve when the truck resolved him instead. Carried through four tiers in bodies that alternately couldn’t reproduce, could reproduce asexually (which didn’t count), and could theoretically reproduce sexually but had no compatible mates (cosmic mockery). It was a stat. “Maintained.” The most clinical, bureaucratic, devastatingly accurate way anyone had ever described the fact that Andy Snodgrass had never gotten laid.

“My virginity is a STAT,” Andy thought. “Every party where someone asked ‘have you ever…’ and I changed the subject. Every time I felt like less of a man because I hadn’t done the thing everyone seemed to have done by seventeen. ‘Am I going to die a virgin?’ YES, AS IT TURNS OUT, I WAS. And it’s been an evolutionary advantage THE ENTIRE TIME. My inability to get laid is a LOAD-BEARING COMPONENT of my UNICORN BUILD. I am literally too virgin to fail.”

His inability to hide his feelings was not a flaw. It was a feature. Broadcasting his loneliness and his joy and his infatuation through a crystal horn he couldn’t turn off? Pure. His horn literally got bigger and brighter the more emotionally exposed he was, and that qualified him for unicorn. He was becoming a mythic creature because he was a sincere, compassionate virgin who couldn’t hide his feelings and had a glowing emotional erection on his forehead.

The universe’s commitment to the bit was, at this point, genuinely awe-inspiring.

“Yes,” Andy thought, because the answer was always yes when the System asked about the unicorn path, even if the qualification criteria made him feel like the universe had been reading his diary and grading it.

The restructuring was gentle compared to the Tier 4 evolution. Where that had been a biological earthquake, this was a renovation: bones stayed, organs stayed, details shifted, finishes upgraded.

His coat changed first. The coarse brown proto-horse hair softened, thinning and multiplying until the texture transitioned from “burlap” to “short velvet,” and the color faded from muddy brown to a pale cream that was almost, but not quite, white. The change moved across his body like a slow tide (he twisted his neck to watch the color shift moving along his side like someone had spilled milk on a brown carpet and the milk was winning), and it was the most surreal grooming experience he had ever had, including the time Gerald had vomited on his work pants.

His mane settled. The bristly mohawk softened and lengthened, falling to the right side of his neck, the color shifting to match the cream with a faint silver undertone that was not quite metallic but decidedly not natural.

His eyes. A warmth behind his ocular structures that pulsed once, twice, and settled. His irises shifted from dark brown to a warm, bright gold that matched his horn’s luminescence.

Golden eyes. Cream coat. Silver mane. Stubby golden-blue horn. The combination was not subtle, not the kind of appearance that could be mistaken for a normal animal by anyone with functional vision. He looked like a unicorn. A small, stubby, proto-version, a unicorn beta test, but the direction was unmistakable, and the specific, freckled “anyone” he was thinking about carried a book full of magical creature illustrations.
