The refrigeration alarm chirped over Cage C while Claire watched through the synchronized Wayhouse relay. Her braced right hand rested beside the controls without touching them.

Two fixed cameras showed the sealed case on a stainless-steel table. Vale stood beyond it, Ortiz near the exclusion line, and Priya at the evidence station with the active log open.

The amber temperature display climbed another increment.

“The medicines are warming,” Vale said.

“The case’s claimed contents are warming,” Claire corrected. “Nobody opens or flexes it.”

    “If it crosses tolerance—”

“Then we use the emergency pathway. We do not mistake a warning for permission.”

Ortiz studied the display. Her hands remained behind her back. “Permitted external cooling is holding less effectively.”

“Keep it active. Record every adjustment and avoid the strip, lid, handles, hinges, and seams.”

Priya repeated the limits into the log. The case remained unopened beneath overlapping cameras.

Before examination, Ortiz entered her contact statement. Vale had surrendered the case at 09:36:18. Quarantine had begun at 09:38:41. At 09:40:06, Ortiz had shifted the lamp six centimeters to reduce glare, brushed the left handle with her coat sleeve, and steadied the sidewall below the lid.

    Priya replayed the movement.

“No contact with the strip?” she asked.

    “No.”

    “Lid or scored channels?”

    “No.”

“Did your sleeve cross above the lid plane?”

Ortiz watched the footage before answering. “No. Outer curve of the handle only. My hand remained below the lid.”

The full statement was read back, signed electronically, and attached to the continuous record. Only then did Claire authorize imaging.

Broad light showed the security strip crossing the closed lid. Two narrow marks interrupted its surface. Under opposing low light, both channels proved deeper than transit scratches: each reached the same backing layers and stopped against intact adhesive. Neither crossed completely through the strip. A narrow lip beside the deeper channel remained seated, with no visible lifting around it.

Priya aligned the manufacturer’s flat reference template with the live image. Had the cuts been made after application, their paths would have followed the case’s geometry over the lid-body join. Instead, both remained level through the section now spanning that join.

    “Scored while flat,” Ortiz said.

    “Before application,” Vale added.

“The geometry supports that,” Claire said. “Preserve the native sequence, calibration frames, lamp settings, and processing history.”

    The refrigeration alarm sounded again.

Threshold footage showed the case entering Lower Cold Receiving at 09:14 with the strip already applied. Three overlapping cameras followed it continuously until Vale’s surrender. The strip was neither removed nor replaced within that coverage.

Ortiz supplied the limitation before Claire could ask. “That excludes an unrecorded local replacement. It does not identify where or by whom the scoring occurred.”

    “Use exactly that wording.”

Vale surrendered the native route file under protest. His handoff signature occupied the first acknowledgment field. The required second field was blank.

“There was an assigned witness,” he said. “Find them.”

“No name was entered here,” Priya replied.

“Then attach the roster. This bay will not inherit an upstream failure because someone left a box empty.”

Claire looked from the blank field to the sealed case. “Attach the unmodified acknowledgment and the complete upstream duty roster to this examination record. Further invasive access requires either the assigned witness or a formally documented explanation for that person’s absence.”

    “Accepted by whom?” Ortiz asked.

“The authority ruling on access,” Claire said. “Not by us.”

Priya entered the condition. Vale signed it under protest.

Claire then requested the manufacturer’s external inspection diagram. It identified two separate indicators behind the case’s factory status window. The amber electronic display tracked temperature. Beneath it, on the interior face of the closed lid, sat a mechanical breach tab designed to change from white to red when lid separation pulled its bridge apart.

The tab could be viewed through the existing transparent window. No panel needed removal; nothing had to enter the seam.

Claire set the limits. “No pressure on the window. No polarized film placed against it. No change to the case angle. Lamp movement only, from outside the exclusion boundary.”

Ortiz checked the manufacturer’s diagram against the serial model. Cho, observing through the authenticated laboratory link, confirmed that the proposed viewing method was non-invasive and could not test the mechanism itself.

Priya fixed one camera on the operators and another on the status window. Ortiz moved the lamp through three recorded angles while Priya adjusted only the remote camera focus.

The amber digits remained visible above. Beneath them, the mechanical tab appeared as a narrow white field crossed by an unbroken dark bridge.

Priya captured the view at native resolution. Vale compared it with the diagram. Cho requested one pass without glare correction and another under neutral light.
