Priya Nanduri sealed her limited attestation beneath red physician’s paper. She pressed each edge flat with the side of her thumb, avoiding the black examination line through the center.

“Severance and secure Gate custody entered at T plus zero,” she read. “Medical clearance entered at T plus two minutes twenty-eight seconds. No continuing transfer tension and no secondary mark within the examination permitted by the protected passenger.”

Her thumb remained on the seal.

“The passenger’s identity, history, body, and destination are outside this inquiry. Nothing else belongs to you.”

    “Agreed,” Claire said.

Her injured right hand rested against her chest in a rigid sling. Swelling had thickened the fingers until they looked borrowed. Priya’s attestation established a sequence, not safety or innocence, and Claire preferred it that way. Comfort had a distressing habit of becoming evidence when spoken near a record.

Across the isolation barrier, Tavin kept his marked arm beneath his coat.

“You are not using it as a control,” he said.

Mara glanced toward the archived calibration strips arranged on the examination table. Each lay inside a clear sleeve bearing a certification number, expected response, custody history, and permitted use.

“His mark might provide the most efficient route comparison,” she said.

    Tavin’s covered shoulder pulled back.

“Then efficiency will have to endure disappointment,” Claire said. “Mr. Reed has refused.”

Mara looked at Claire’s sling before returning her attention to Tavin. Contesting either boundary would weaken the proceeding before it began.

Tavin stepped nearer the barrier window. “Observation only. No heat, summons, naming, or comparison under my identity.”

“No direct exposure,” Claire said. “No induced response. Your image remains outside the Earth mirror.”

    “And no inference from stillness.”

“The record may state whether an attachment response is observed during the bounded diagnostic. It will not call you a route because nothing happens.”

After a moment, he placed his covered arm on the ledge beneath the window.

Claire entered every restriction before the apparatus was activated. His cooperation was not trust. It was a limited service rendered on terms he had chosen.

Mara then set a wrapped evidence case beside the archived controls.

“I brought the abolished seal from the locked lineage cabinet,” she said. “I removed it in the presence of Keeper Dorn and transferred it directly to Physician Nanduri.”

Priya checked the two custody marks on the wrapping. “Received sealed. No intermediate opening.”

Mara broke her personal thread. Priya opened the outer cloth, exposing a smaller evidence sleeve. Inside lay the fractured seal, its broken center dull beneath the lamps.

Claire did not allow it onto the diagnostic surface.

    “Consent terms first.”

Mara’s mouth tightened. “The seal may remain within the passive witness field during the archived controls and the EC-17 test. It may not be used to open, summon, transfer, revive, or validate any hereditary claim.”

    “And the restriction?”

“Until both jurisdictions release it, I surrender access to it. No removal by me, my agents, or the Covenant.”

The cost landed visibly. The seal was not merely old evidence; it was one of the few objects through which Mara could assert the history she had spent her life defending.

Claire said, “Either jurisdiction may stop the examination. Neither may continue alone.”

    “Accepted.”

Priya placed the sleeved seal on a marked evidence stand beyond the apparatus housing. Mara signed the temporary restriction. Earth would receive the restriction with the rest of the mirrored protocol.

    The service telephone rang once.

Claire lifted the receiver with her left hand and engaged the speaker.

“Wayhouse, Earth witness line established,” June said through relay noise.

A hospital records officer followed. “Earth will witness on condition of a complete evidentiary mirror under independent custody.”

“Mirror excludes the protected passenger and Mr. Reed,” Claire said. “Earth receives the EC-17 chain, archived controls, consent instruments, timestamps, and results. Protected fields require joint consent.”

“Agreed. The Earth copy locks against unilateral alteration upon verified receipt.”

Giving Earth a mirror meant Claire could no longer withdraw the only complete record or contain an inconvenient interpretation locally. Her hand pulsed inside the sling.

    June did not encourage her.

    “Accepted,” Claire said.

Mara entered the Earth witness code. June recited the relay time, and the records officer repeated it after the transmission delay. Claire fed the protocol into the relay.

    Copper flooded her mouth.

The barrier vibrated faintly. Tavin kept his covered arm on the ledge.

Claire turned to the first archived sleeve. “Certified control B-four. Read the expected behavior before opening.”

Mara read from the certification line. “Preserved transfer trace from a living bearer, authority remaining attached at collection. Expected response: BODY PRESENT. OBJECT NONE. AUTHORITY PRESENT—ATTACHED. Recipient field required by archive format.”

The Earth officer repeated the expected response. Priya verified the sleeve number, and Claire authorized the pass.

    Cold light crossed the control.

    The local sheet printed first.

BODY: PRESENT. OBJECT: NONE. AUTHORITY: PRESENT—ATTACHED.

A complete recipient field appeared below the classification. Earth’s printer reproduced the same output after the relay delay.

    “Match authenticated,” Mara said.

“Earth authenticates the match,” the records officer replied.

No light appeared in Mara’s abolished seal. Tavin’s sleeve did not shift, and the barrier registered no attachment pull toward him.

The second sleeve entered the witness slot.

“Certified control C-nine,” Mara read. “Inert consignment residue from ordinary sealed cargo, with no allocation claim. Expected response: BODY NONE. OBJECT PRESENT. AUTHORITY NONE. Sender and recipient fields not applicable.”

Again Earth repeated the certified expectation before Claire permitted the run.

    Measured warmth crossed the sleeve.

BODY: NONE. OBJECT: PRESENT. AUTHORITY: NONE.

The apparatus omitted the nonapplicable identity fields according to the archived format. Both jurisdictions authenticated the match. Mara’s seal remained inert.

The final positive control carried three seals and a warning stripe.

“Certified control D-two,” Mara said. “Detached custodial writ with independently documented issue and receipt. No living bearer or ordinary object represented in the sample. Expected response: BODY NONE. OBJECT NONE. AUTHORITY PRESENT—CUSTODIAL, DETACHED. Sender and recipient fields required.”

The known writ did not concern a completed passenger release. It could validate the category without answering whether such authority could survive one.

Claire waited until Earth had repeated the expectation.

    “Run it.”
