Chapter 10: One Minute Unwitnessed
by inkadminThe elevator doors opened.
“Car is physically empty,” the porter said over the radio. “No one inside. No weight event on the controller.”
Claire did not ask him to approach.
Inside the Receiving Office, the barred Cinder Mile remained white and motionless beyond its threshold. Mara knelt beside Tavin with one hand applying only the dressing pressure he had authorized. Her other palm rested flat against the stone floor, carrying her own weight. She touched him nowhere else.
The radio clicked twice.
“Camera Seven disagrees,” the porter said. “Its live monitor shows someone standing inside the car.”
Claire’s marked wrist tightened.
“Before we add any witness,” she said, “would another person entering the corridor become available to the claim?”
“Yes. Possibly by presence alone.” His answer came without hesitation. “I won’t expose another worker for corroboration I already have by radio.”
“Accepted. No additional personnel. Your corridor, your operational authority, and your unconditional stop veto.”
Tavin planted both hands behind himself and shifted his own weight away from the cold threshold. Mara neither guided nor steadied him. Her pressure hand remained fixed at the dressing while he moved beneath it.
“I remain a witness,” he said through his fever. “That does not alter my refusal.”
“Recorded,” Claire said.
The porter gave them the monitor’s corrected time. The recorder ran 1.2 seconds slow against the elevator controller and the hotel’s independent incident clock. Every time he reported from the recorder, he would add the verified drift.
“Corrected 14:17:23,” he said. “The figure is visible inside the elevator. It resembles you, Claire.”
“Describe only. Do not transmit the image.”
“Understood.”
Physically, the porter could see an empty brass-railed car. On Camera Seven’s monitor, a woman stood near its rear wall. No entry appeared on the preceding frame. The elevator controller showed no passenger weight, door obstruction, or interior call.
Claire looked at the sealed Office record rather than imagining the face.
“How close are you to the camera?”
“Three steps. I can reach the lens from outside the car.”
“Can you occlude it without crossing the elevator threshold or placing yourself between the camera and an exit?”
“Yes.”
“What does the test cost you?”
“Possibly attention. If the figure reacts outside the recording path, I stop.”
“Agreed. Cover the lens briefly. Do not touch the housing.”
A pause followed. Fabric whispered against plastic.
“Lens covered,” the porter said.
Claire counted five seconds against the Office clock.
“Uncover.”
Another whisper.
The porter did not speak immediately.
“Report,” Claire said.
“The figure stopped.”
“Define stopped.”
“The recording continued. Time code advanced. Corridor light changed normally. The figure did not. One foot was above the carpet when I covered the lens. It remained suspended in the same position until I removed the cloth.”
“And then?”
“It completed the step.”
Tavin’s breath caught. Mara’s free hand pressed harder against the floor, not against him.
“The path is observational,” Claire said. “Or requires observation to advance.”
“Do not make that broader than the test,” Mara warned.
Claire inclined her head although the porter could not see it. “Correct. Camera Seven’s contaminated recording path is necessary for the movement we tested. We have not proved where the observer is or what the figure is.”
“Better,” Mara said.
On Earth, the porter announced that he was proceeding under his own authority to isolate Camera Seven while preserving life-safety systems. A hotel-wide power cut was rejected: it would disable fire-door monitoring, emergency lighting controls, and alarms. Unrelated cameras and emergency services would remain active.
At corrected 14:17:48.4, he described the figure beginning an odd shoulder movement as it approached the elevator threshold.
“Right shoulder forward and down,” he said. “Left hand crosses the chest but closes on nothing. The head turns left. Weight stays back.”
“Continue.”
“Corrected 14:17:48.9: it clears the threshold. The actual corridor remains empty. At 14:17:49.2, the call lamp illuminates. The figure moved before the lamp.”
“It anticipated the signal,” Claire said.
“Or performed the act that required one,” Mara replied.
The figure waited where no body stood. When no recipient approached, it retreated into the recorded elevator, then returned once more. At corrected 14:18:21.6, it raised its left hand toward Camera Seven.
The porter’s breathing sharpened over the radio.
“End it,” Claire said. “Network and external power, both under witness.”
“I am disconnecting the network lead now.”
A click.
“Network disconnected.”
“External power next.”
A harder snap followed.
“External power disconnected. Corrected time 14:18:22. Transmission ended.”
The elevator remained physically open and empty. Its rear display was black. Fire monitoring, emergency lights, alarms, and unrelated cameras continued operating.
