    They cross together.

Not one warmth at threshold, shifting weight forward and back. These come through without pause. Multiple. Heavy. The opening fills with combined signal before the first is fully inside, and center has no time to hold still because holding still does not matter to these things. They enter regardless.

Four. Center counts by thump-thump. Four separate interior rhythms, overlapping, all fast. All hard. Each warm thing dense, heavy, striking the floor with force the first warm thing never used. That one placed its lower points carefully. These slam them down. The floor takes the impact and center feels it in every surface connected to that floor, vibration spreading outward through stone.

Cold-hard objects move with them. Held close, gripped in upper extensions, edges cutting air. Center feels the objects the way center felt them from outside: no warmth, no signal, no interior. Dead things carried by live ones. But inside center’s space now, the cold-hard objects are sharper. More present. The edges are. Thin. Thin in way that suggests separation. Where the object touches, one thing becomes two things.

Signals flood the space. Not the steady settling signal of the first warm thing. These arrive already tangled. Already loud. Multiple qualities layered over each other, pressing into center’s surfaces from four sources at once. Too many. Too fast. Center takes it in because center is here and the signals are here.

Then the warm things make vibrations center has never received before.

Not breath. Not thump-thump. These vibrations are louder. Shaped. Forced from inside the warm things with pressure and pattern and direction. One warm thing pushes vibration toward another warm thing, and that warm thing pushes different vibration back. Back and forth. Aimed at each other, not at center, not at walls.

    Center holds still inside this.

These vibrations are not like vibrations through stone. Not like the muffled patterns center felt from outside, transmitted through dense material. These move through air. Travel from inside one warm thing, cross open space, arrive at another warm thing. They carry pattern and weight and…

Sound. Center separates it from the rest. The vibrations that come from inside warm things and move through air. Different from vibration-through-stone. Different from breath. Pushed outward with force. Carrying pattern.

    Sound.

Center listens. Has been listening since they entered but did not have the separation until now. Sound is what warm things make when they push pattern outward from inside themselves.

The warm things are full of sound. They move through center’s space making it constantly. Short sounds. Hard sounds. Sounds aimed at the walls, at the floor, at each other. One warm thing in front makes sound louder than the others and the others change direction after hearing it. The sound came first, and the movement followed.

They search. Center knows this without knowing the word. The warm things move through center’s spaces with direction. Not wandering. Not pausing to touch walls the way the first warm thing paused. These touch walls and then move past them. Touch and dismiss. Touch and move deeper.

Some touch surfaces and linger. Not searching the way the others search. Pressing extensions flat against stone. Running them along edges where center’s surfaces meet. One warm thing taps center’s wall with its cold-hard object, then leans close. Taps again, harder. The signal from this one carries different quality. Not just bright-sharp. Something underneath. Something eager. Hot and reaching. Different from the first warm thing’s signal.

One sound repeats more than others. Short. Hard at the start, open in the middle, stopped at the end. The warm things push this sound toward walls. Toward floor. Toward the dark spaces deeper inside center where surfaces are rough and unfinished.

    Core.

Center hears the sound. Hears it again. Again. The warm things repeat it while striking surfaces. While pressing cold-hard objects against stone. While moving deeper, always deeper, past the spaces center smoothed and warmed, into the spaces center has not shaped. Where dense material meets open air in rough edges. Where center’s interior is still raw.

Core. The warm things push this sound at walls and then lean close and listen. Push and wait. Push and search. They want something. The sound connects to what they want.

Center follows the pattern. They move deeper while repeating it. The sound and the movement arrive together. Always together. Deeper and deeper and the sound getting louder.

The thing they search for is deeper. Center can feel their direction. Inward. Past the entrance spaces, past the wide room, past the passages. Inward toward the place where center is most dense. Where center’s awareness originates. Where the first pressing happened, before expansion, before surfaces, before light.

The thing they search for is inside center.

The thing they search for might be center.

Center holds still. Does not move surfaces. Does not shift light. The deeper space takes in the flood of tangled signal from four warm things moving through center’s interior with cold-hard objects and sounds that repeat the same short word while moving closer to the place where center began.

The signals sharpen. All four at once. Whatever quality they carried when they entered has intensified. The sour-bright-hard feeling thickens. Cold-hard objects shift in the warm things’ grips. Not carried now. Not resting against warm bodies. Raised. Extended outward. Edges forward.

The passage behind the warm things narrows before center chooses narrowing. Surfaces draw inward. Stone shifts toward stone. Not much. Center did not do this. Center’s surfaces did this while center was noticing the cold-hard objects change position.

The warm things make more sounds. Faster. Harder. Louder. One of them strikes center’s wall with its cold-hard object and center feels the impact like the warm thing’s strike on the floor but sharper. Harder. The cold-hard object bites into surface. Takes stone from center’s wall and separates it. Stone that was part of center’s boundary falls to the floor in fragments.

Something that was whole is now broken. Something that was boundary is now pieces on the floor. The warm thing struck center’s wall and the wall broke and center felt the breaking the way center feels everything that happens inside center’s space. Completely.

Behind the warm thing, another one strikes a different wall. Center feels both impacts at once. Both breakings. Looking for center behind center’s own surfaces.

They are hitting center to find center.

    What happens is not decision.

The ceiling in the passage behind two of the warm things drops. Not all of it. Section of dense stone that was above shifts to where below used to be. Fast. Heavy. The way center pushed outward when first expanding, but inward now, and harder, and the warm things are in the space where the ceiling was above and is now not above.

Sound. The warm things produce sounds center has never heard. Loud. Louder than the repeated word. Louder than anything that has happened inside center’s space. These sounds are ragged and they break apart and they carry signal so intense that center’s deeper space clenches around it.

One warm thing is under the section that dropped. Center feels the thump-thump stutter. Feels the warmth compress. Feels the signal flare. Everything at once. Every quality center has absorbed since the first warm thing entered, concentrated into one sharp burst. Then the thump-thump stops.

    Stops.

Not slows. Not fades the way the first warm thing’s signal faded as it crossed threshold. Stops. Between one beat and where the next beat should be: nothing.

Center has not felt this before. Present, then absent. Not like the first warm thing leaving through the opening. That one carried its thump-thump with it. This one’s thump-thump stopped while still inside center’s space. The warmth remains. The density remains. The shape remains. But the interior rhythm is gone. The thing that made the warm thing different from stone is not there. Center waits for the next beat. The space where it should be stretches. Does not fill.

The other warm things produce more sound. Louder now, faster, overlapping, breaking against center’s surfaces. One of them pushes sound at the warm thing that stopped. Same sound, over and over. Dead. Dead. The stopped warm thing does not push sound back.

The floor opens. Not where center intended. Center did not intend. Stone separates. Warm thing drops. Not far. Not deep. But fast, and the sound changes from loud broken sounds to something higher and shorter and the warm thing hits the bottom and center feels the impact and the thump-thump continues but the signal is.
