    Time to Seal: 05:21

While I fended off the assault of the smaller animals, calling for assistance when something larger, like a dog, showed up, Gabriel explained the Fallen.

There was a threshold of being too fucked up inside that allowed Hell to turn you into one of their own. Usually they’d shower those with Gifts and alter their appearance to match. Only sometimes they’d use them as sleeper agents, hiding their influence to reveal them for maximum impact.

They would be our most dangerous opposition as they allowed Hell to wield power more freely than even the most powerful demons could. Around them it would be more like now, full on Apocalypse, instead of the safety the Seal would eventually provide.

And the scariest part was, it wasn’t quantifiable how one became Fallen. Unlike what that profane space had wanted to make me believe, there was no Corruption Meter. No visible line to toe. It was a mix of basic psychological vulnerability, lack of humanity, and alignment to Hell itself. Taking their boons didn’t have to open one up to becoming Fallen. But you’d never know which one would be the one to push you over the line. Or what moment of weakness, or of hatred, could erode the walls one had just enough for them to slither in.

The explanation had been very frustrating but Gabriel seemed as frustrated by the mechanics as I was. She had boiled it all down to very simple guidelines.

“Hold on to your humanity, do good, do not deal with the devil.”

My power set revolved around turning into beasts. I had nearly killed another human because I hadn’t been vigilant enough, and I had already asked a devil if they could keep cheating on my behalf. I was doing super well.

At that point I straight up asked Gabriel if I should just leave this group, drop the party and head out, protecting the others from my inevitable fall.

She had reassured me that this thought alone meant I was still firmly one of the good guys and doing far better than I was giving myself credit for.

[“I’m putting the odds of Jamie falling before you on three to two. Heaven really screwed that guy over by saddling him with that class. He is both not as pure of heart as that class wants him to be and painfully aware of story tropes. There is a reason that there are so many stories about corrupted knights.”]

Jamie wouldn’t be able to see anything Lucy told me through the Guides chat. We only shared Gabriel. But I couldn’t address anything Lucy said without hinting at what they said. So I just ignored that.

I spotted an approaching red dot slow down, turn white, and scuttle away.

“I think it’s over,” I announced to the others in the room.

Immediately a dozen eyes fell onto me, their anxiety palpable. Would the mad girl shift again and turn into a blood-thirsty monster?

The animals hadn’t granted a lot of experience. At some point my Heightened Senses ticked up enough so that I could see their designations and levels. They had all been level zero.

But there had been a lot of them. Thanks to being in party with Jamie, and no one else for that matter, I had gotten some experience for each attacker he had killed. He was up to level four now, I was up to level five. He had gotten a big chunk of Task completions, too, and from my glances at the chat, he was pretty excited about some of those rewards. On my end I had only gotten a handful. I gathered the most impactful ones were Class-specific and that meant any time I did something awesome without being shifted was a missed opportunity.

At least both Lucy and Gabriel had assured me that Hell basically never repeated the same attack twice. I’d wait a bit, and wouldn’t shift at all in here, but I should be safe for now. At least from going berserk at my own party.

Jamie came up to me, carrying a steaming bowl of spaghetti. Some of the others had fired up the kitchen to provide everyone with some sustenance. It was in the middle of the night and never in my life had any food looked as appetizing as that bowl. I took the bowl and followed Jamie to an empty group of chairs. I assigned the two points I got to Strength and Endurance, putting all my physical stats at 5. Slightly above average.

    “Thanks.”

“Thank you, too,” he said. “We’d all been too preoccupied with dealing with the situation at hand, no one had thought about how we could turn it to our favor.”

“I’ve been a raid leader for a while. Honed those skills.”

“That sounds like you are trying to diminish your actions, Eve. Not the first time I noticed that either. Being proud of doing good is not the same as being arrogant.”

I wanted to deny the accusation. Instead I ate pasta. There was no good way to refute what he was saying. My therapist used to say something very similar. There was a reason I no longer went to therapy. It was uncomfortable.

    This spaghetti was goddamn divine.

“What goodies did you get?” I asked while I glanced over my list.

“So, turns out ‘Defeating enemies while defending others’ is a thing I need to do. Like your ‘Killing while shifted’ is. Usually animals wouldn’t count for that. But when they are rampaging because of Hell’s bullshit, they do.”

    “What’s the highest you got?”

    “50. And 20, 10 and 5 before.”

I choked on a meatball. My reward for 5 had been really good.

Jamie grinned, took off his parka and held out his left arm, revealing a silver bracer. It was adorned with divine glyphs. Its description popped up.

[Greater Blessed Bracer of Divine Shield

Upon activation summons an Indestructible Divine Shield.

My collar made me a better dog. His bracer made him a goddamn superhero. Still, ‘Indestructible’ was a crazy word to see. I couldn’t fully figure out the implications yet, but the gears in my mind started turning. Eventually we’d find an unstoppable object and we’d challenge physics in most interesting ways.

    “Damn,” I said.

“Yup. The rest isn’t as mind blowing. Won’t be needing that katana anymore. I have a sword I can’t lose that I can summon into my hand at any time. And,” he held out his right hand, “a ring that grants me additional uses of my Lay on Hands ability.”

    “Healing?”

    “Yeah. Nifty, right?”

    “Really nifty.”

At the other end of the room the others were having a discussion. Liz and a man whose name I didn’t know peeled away from the others. Liz packed her pockets full of cutlery.

“So, this one is a freebie, puppy, but it’ll be on you to sell the others on it. Don’t leave before the ‘it’ has happened. It won’t be much longer and I assure you, you’ll know when ‘it’ happened.” Of course they hadn’t manifested for this, so no one besides me and Gabriel had heard it.

Jamie was about to say something, but I cut him off with a gesture. I placed my bowl on the floor, stood up and walked over to Liz who had just grabbed a can of energy drink and put it in her jacket.

    “Liz. You shouldn’t go out.”

Liz and her companion turned to face me.

    “And why?” she asked.

“I don’t know. My devil guide is playing mind games. Telling me we should all stay here waiting for the next attack to happen before we go outside. But I’m really tired and do not wish to play games. So I’m just telling you what they told me. Take it or leave it, I won’t fight you on it. My gut feeling is to not go. And yes, I’m also fucking itching to leave. Everyone is looking at me like I’m several knives short of a full block and only one catastrophe away from murdering everyone. I’d really rather be somewhere else, too.”

I also grabbed an energy drink and returned to Jamie. Liz and that guy returned to Anthony and the others to discuss.

“Please don’t give me a judgement, positive or negative, on what I just did. I’m not in the mood for either.”

“Got it, boss. That pasta is really good, hm?”
