Notifications echo in my ears and form in golden text before my eyes. I choose yes, and feel 3 bronze cards materialize in my storage beside a small black and red shimmering 20-sided die.

“What is this…? A side quest…? System, since when are there quests?”

    [Hidden]

I watch one of the lines below the side quests fade away, where the quest to reach the 1st level of qi refinement used to be. Nothing on this quest board looks like it can be attained in the near future, so I let it fade away to the back of my mind. Yet, the fact that this function existed and I had no idea about it makes me wonder what else this system is hiding.

“Is that it? My Check-Ins are daily now? Anything else you want to show me?” I murmur out into the empty hut.

    Only silence returns.

I stand to my feet, and when I look around, everything feels and looks different.

The depth of my senses has increased to an astonishing degree. The smell of my bed, my sour clothes, and the old rations in my wooden crate are far more potent.

The cracks and texture of the wood and mud that hold this hut together are so much more defined.

When I look down at my own body, it feels significantly stronger. The same sensation I felt after eating that marrow cleansing pill is radiating through me, like fresh surges of energy just washed through my meridians. However, they flow around with ease.

My pores are wide open, but there are no built-up impurities to be expelled.

If I didn’t cleanse myself previously, I’d certainly be sitting in a pile of that black goo again right now.

I move my fingers around, and feel the increased dexterity.

Then breathe in through my nose and sense the ambient qi in the air that feels warmer and more familiar.

I jump up in the air, and my head touches the top of the hut. My strength has significantly increased, and I don’t even know by how much.

My skin, bones, muscles, and organs all feel extremely warm. I can sense raw qi infused within my entire being, an effect that was not present moments ago before this transition.

I’m filled with excitement, but at the same time, a twinge of fear washes over me.

There’s a saying many elderly would repeat often back in the farming village I worked as a slave in for 12 years. It is that, “A tree that stands out in the forest will be destroyed by the wind.”

There is already a set strength and power hierarchy set in this servant and steward relationship I have with Zhou Kang. We both have 5 mixed 9th grade trash spirit roots. He’s wasted his whole life, over 60 years, and only made it to the 2nd level of qi refinement, while I’ve already made it to the 1st level in just over a month.

His temper is already one to be feared, and having any envy my way would be unwise. I already used up all my perceived luck when I said I found a spirit stone in the stream. Showing off even more would raise suspicion.

I gulp, and pull the 20-sided red and black die from my storage space.

“System. You granted me a cultivation technique when I asked before… Now I need something that can hide my abilities and protect me from danger. We’re in this together, aren’t we?”
