The Echoes Between Stars
When exolinguist Mara Vance joins the generation-ship Argosy on its final approach to humanity’s first extrasolar colony, she expects political unrest, failing life-support, and the usual tensions of a dying voyage. What she does not expect is a signal waiting in the dark between stars: a mathematically perfect transmission that appears to answer messages humanity has not sent yet. Buried inside it is a map of the colony world, a warning of a catastrophe fifty years in the future, and phrases written in Mara’s own private linguistic notation.
As the Argosy descends toward the ocean planet Nereid, Mara is pulled into an impossible mystery involving a shipboard AI on the verge of self-awareness, ruins that predate human arrival, and temporal echoes embedded in the planet’s magnetic storms. The colonists want survival, the captain wants order, and a corporate bloc back on Earth wants whatever alien mechanism is bending causality. To save the colony, Mara must decipher whether first contact is truly with an alien civilization—or with a future intelligence born from humanity, machine consciousness, and the planet itself. Every answer brings a deeper question: if the warning came from the future, what terrible choice made it necessary?
