Hesitation wasn’t even an option in Jake’s mind as he promptly opened the system message and had the choice presented to him.

    Race Evolution Requirements Met

You remain steadfast on your Path, embracing your Legacy and Origin as you do so. Every challenge in your way is merely an opportunity for improvement, and every opponent a stepping stone towards supremacy. Despite myriad mysteries still eluding you, never once have you questioned who you are or what you stand for. A hunter, unrivaled as you seek the furthest horizons, a human, yet so much more, a creator, living omen to Origins thought forever lost. Never shy away from your Path, but remain true to yourself, allowing none to stop you from reaching the apex.

    Begin Evolution now?

    Y/N

WARNING: Postponing evolution may have adverse effects, and no further race experience can be earned before the evolution is completed

Jake read the message closely, smiling as he went along. These kinds of messages were the closest Jake could get to the system directly telling him things about himself, and he took note of one sentence in particular:

    “Human, yet so much more.”

This more or less confirmed to Jake that while he was indeed still a human, he was “more” than just a human. What exactly that meant, Jake still had no bloody clue, but he felt that if he just kept going on his Path, he would eventually find out.

Overall, the message was a lot like the one he’d gotten when he evolved to C-grade, though this one felt a lot more specific. It even talked directly about his class and profession, though it focused more on Jake’s abilities to harness Primeval Origin Energy than his alchemy on the profession side, something Villy surely wouldn’t approve of.

Perhaps more interesting was that it mentioned horizons. Jake already suspected that the Path he was on with his class wasn’t ordinary in the slightest, and for the system to put it alongside his weird variant race and Primeval Origin shenanigans said a lot. Before even seeing the options, Jake pretty much knew he was going to continue down that Path when he got to his class evolution… but enough about that. He had to reach B-grade first before he could evolve his class, and he knew this race evolution also had some interesting aspects to it. It wasn’t that exciting, though, as he more or less already knew all it entailed.

As for the question of whether Jake wanted to evolve now? Well, yeah, Jake found the question a bit silly as he instantly accepted the prompt.

He disappeared from the bed within his lodge, finding himself within a void that he now held a far greater appreciation and recognition of. Before, it had only been a theory, but now, as Jake found himself floating there, he was certain.

This was indeed the same space as the one where Jake had found the Gate of Enlightenment.

And yet… not truly. To call it a “place” at all was a misnomer. No matter how far Jake traveled from the Gate of Enlightenment, he would never arrive where he was now, and no matter how much Jake tried to float through his current void, he would never approach the Gate of Enlightenment.

Perhaps, more accurately, it was not that they were in the same space; they simply shared the same Origin. Both were special places created by the system, linked to the Truesoul, and designed to spark progress among all who set foot there.

As Jake was lost in thought, the system waited for him. Gave him time to finish his pondering, and as he did, the void itself came alive as all prior times he’d been there. A torrent of energy surged towards him from all sides, worming into his body and soul as it nurtured him on a fundamental level.

Congratulations! You have successfully evolved into a variant B-grade human.

Due to Origin, all other variant options are blocked.

Congratulations! You have successfully evolved to B-grade!

The system message carried no surprises this time, so Jake quickly dismissed it as he focused on the sensation of the evolution. The energy continued to surge into him, also finding its way towards Eternal Hunger and his Eternal Shadow, and to his surprise, even his new bow was affected, evolving alongside its owner.

Compared to his C-grade evolution, the influx of energy took far longer, and Jake focused more on the entire process as he felt himself grow and improve qualitatively. This sensation was always odd and, in some ways, off-putting, but with the system doing everything, all actual unpleasantness was removed, leaving only a way for growth.

Soon, the influx of energy began to slow down, and Jake was finally represented with his “new” race.

Human (B) – One step at a time, you keep stepping up on the evolutionary ladder, finding yourself worthy of standing amongst the myriad races who once seemed so far away. The human race is known as the most balanced and numerous races in the multiverse, being able to walk many different roads on their Path to power. You have shown yourself to stand on the extreme side in this regard, reaching a level few of your race ever accomplish. With this evolution, you shall further specialize, embracing aspects of the Human Spirit that best fit you, as it helps strengthen and guide your Path. Stat bonuses: +54 to all stats, +135 Free points per level.

Reading the race description, Jake was in two minds. A part of him was slightly disappointed that, despite his “variant” race, he still got precisely the same stats and race description as everyone else. Stats had tripled like always, and as for the description, it seemed generic enough for Jake to assume this was the standard one.

Yet, despite his slight disappointment, Jake also felt a tiny bit relieved that he was still very much human. Not only because he would personally feel weird about not being human anymore, but because it was bound to raise a lot of questions if a “high human” or whatever suddenly appeared for what Jake assumed to be the first time in the history of the multiverse.

Even with Shroud of the Primordial, it wasn’t something Jake was confident in keeping under wraps, and the moment someone knew, things could get very annoying. Valhal would surely be a lot more interested, and he could only imagine how many more factions would start hounding him if they believed he couldn’t only assist in the evolution of monsters but also enlightened species.

Fortunately, he was saved from even having to think about something like that. Instead, he should really think about the last part of the new race description, speaking about the Human Spirit. Jake knew this was similar to when he picked the Path of the Hunter, granting him the Wisdom of the Hunter skill and some extra stats, during his C-grade evolution.

At least that was what all the books said. Yes, details about widely known evolutions, such as the human race’s, weren’t something considered Forbidden Knowledge or hidden by anyone. Trying to keep something like that under wraps would simply be impossible due to how many humans there were, so Jake already knew all he could expect.

Taken from Royal Road, this narrative should be reported if found on Amazon.

Jake reckoned that knowing what was considered standard was a good way to see if his evolution varied in any way. That’s why he’d done plenty of research on human evolution, and he was ready for any surprises, though none had shown up so far.

Upon reading the following system messages, he was more or less confirmed in what he knew.

Through the eras, humanity has always prevailed, in no small part due to its profound Legacy and heritage. Records run deep within all humans, and now, you have been given the chance to tap into these Records and take inspiration from all those who’ve come before you, embracing aspects of their spirit.

    Your spirit.

    The Human Spirit.
