Chapter 8: Fourteen Newtons

His arm jerked toward the main hatch. He caught the frame with his shoulder before his hand entered the two-centimeter gap, but the movement tightened the blood-wet strip until his fingers blanched.
“Hold the hatch.”
Ortiz stopped it with one gloved hand on the edge and the other over the brace control. Mara closed padded forceps around the saturated gauze without cutting it.
“I have the load,” she said.
Only then did Eli let his forearm settle.
Imani supported his hand and unwound the binding one turn at a time. Damp layers pulled free reluctantly. Where dried blood had joined cloth to skin, she eased the material loose by millimeters, protecting both his wrist and the line disappearing through the hatch.
Mara watched the tension rather than Eli’s face. “Holding.”
The final turn came away. A compressed red band circled his wrist, and his fingers trembled in Imani’s palm.
Ortiz transferred the hatch to its fixed stop. The opening remained at two centimeters while he unbolted the lower service plate, working diagonally so no part of him crossed the hatch line. He set the bolts on the floor in removal order.
Behind the plate, a seven-centimeter aperture opened through the structure.
The missing service key lay below it.
Its shaft caught the work light. The bow faced partly upward, threaded by the gauze that remained under deliberate tension from somewhere inside Annex B-Lower.
Nobody reached through.
“Forceps only,” Ortiz said.
Using the longest pair, he guided the loose gauze end through the key’s bow. The blood-stiffened material resisted twice before flattening between the jaws and passing through. Mara took control of the returned end.
“Secure.”
Ortiz withdrew the tool and eased the main hatch closed. Mara compensated for each change in tension as the gap narrowed from two centimeters to one, then to a black seam. The hatch seated without trapping the line.
The latch went home.
Ortiz checked the brace before removing his hands. “Zero centimeters. Displacement remains point eight millimeter.”
The mandatory stop remained one millimeter.
Imani wrapped Eli’s wrist in fresh gauze and supported his arm against his chest. His face had gone gray, but he stayed upright while Ortiz arranged the capstan components beside the sealed hatch.
Nothing about the load control was described as a fourteen-newton release.
Ortiz pointed to the controller. “Fourteen newtons is the absolute permitted peak. The release command goes at twelve point six.”
Ruth remained behind the marked observation line. “Because it keeps pulling after the command?”
“Because relays are not magic,” Ortiz said. “Measured release lag at this draw rate gives us an expected maximum overshoot of one point four newtons. Twelve point six plus one point four equals fourteen.”
He made Eli repeat it for the record.
“Predictive command threshold: twelve point six newtons,” Eli said. “Absolute peak ceiling: fourteen. Any trace above fourteen invalidates the attempt and ends powered retrieval.”
Ortiz assembled the rig in six minutes. The capstan would draw toward a nominal working load below twelve newtons, issue its release command at 12.6, and deploy five centimeters of automatic slack while the mechanical release completed.
Authority remained divided. Ortiz held mechanical and breach veto. Imani held the clinical stop. Mara controlled evidence contact. Ruth could advise and record from outside the line but could touch neither tools nor evidence.
The charged eighteen-volt pack read 36%.
Assembly and three release tests reduced it to 34%. On each test, Ortiz used the prepared line segment on their side of the wall while Ruth captured the high-rate trace.
The controller commanded release at 12.6 newtons all three times. The measured peaks were 13.8, 13.9, and 13.8. Automatic slack deployed correctly after each command.
Ortiz reviewed the traces himself rather than accepting Ruth’s reading.
“All peaks below fourteen,” he said. “Release lag consistent. Predictive cutoff confirmed.”
He disconnected the test segment and measured the brace again.
Point eight.
Mara positioned a clean receiving tray beneath the service aperture. Its lid remained open only as far as necessary, and the tray did not cross the wall plane.
Eli explained the signal code toward the aperture. Changes in tension and irregular flashes would request slack, hold, or rotation without requiring speech.
Mara secretly selected the test sequence. One flash passed through the aperture.
The unseen holder gave slack.
After an uneven pause, she sent two flashes. The line stopped and held.
Her final single flash came at a different interval.
Slack returned.
Ortiz studied the aperture, the capstan, and the steady trace. “One attempt.”
Mara aligned the gauze so the key would approach bow-first. Ortiz engaged the driver at minimum speed.
The capstan removed the available slack. Metal scraped beyond the wall, and the key shifted. Its bow rose first. The shaft followed at an angle while the gauze rotated through it.
The load stayed below twelve newtons until the bow entered the aperture. Then the key’s shoulder caught against the lower lip.
Ortiz stopped the driver.
More force would only wedge the key against the edge.
From behind the observation line, Ruth leaned sideways for a better view. “It needs slack and a clockwise turn. Not much. If the bow passes eleven o’clock, the shoulder should clear.”
Ortiz checked the geometry before accepting the advice. Eli requested slack through the established code.
Mara flashed the signal.
Tension eased from inside. The key dropped several millimeters without falling away.
A second signal requested rotation.
For one breath, nothing moved. Then the bow turned. The shaft followed until the shoulder no longer rested squarely against the aperture lip.
Mara raised one finger. “Now.”
