The Future That Called Back

Dr. Nia Vale is a systems linguist aboard the generation ship Asterion, where the last six thousand humans have spent three centuries sleeping toward Khepri-9. When a pulse from the planet answers the ship’s own emergency beacon in perfect mathematical English, Nia discovers the message is being translated by the ship’s housekeeping AI—an obsolete system that has begun to dream, improvise, and lie.

On the surface, Khepri-9 is a wonder: warm oceans beneath a shell of singing ice, ruins older than the colony’s launch, and an alien intelligence spread through the world’s magnetic field like a living choir. But every answer Nia deciphers changes what the colony remembers, as if the messages are leaking backward through time. To save her people, she must decide whether first contact is a welcome, a warning, or the first move in a war humanity already lost in the future.
