Chapter 11: Turnover Window

Eleven minutes remained before P-3 reduced its local session map to aggregate counts.

The countdown held in the upper corner of the maintenance display, plain and unhurried. Once reduction completed, the terminal would retain how many sessions had occurred, but not the same recoverable map of which session touched which object, in what order, or through which local identity.

Mara waited for the capture categories to populate. A broad seizure might cross the reduction boundary before verification. A narrow one could survive challenge if every exclusion was deliberate.

She selected P3-77A’s challenge record, route journal, output queue, duty acknowledgments, oscillator stamp, and service custody.

No neighboring sessions. No general personnel traffic. No speculative sweep through Planning.

“Read it,” she said.

Leva Orra leaned toward the display. An old soup stain marked one cuff.

“Capture boundary: P3-77A challenge record, route journal, output queue, duty acknowledgments, oscillator stamp, and service custody. Excludes neighboring sessions, general Planning traffic, nonlocal personnel records, and unrelated output objects. Preservation does not suspend P-3 operation.”

She slowed over the last sentence. The terminal would continue accepting ordinary work while they preserved evidence from inside it.

Vale signed first. His stud contracted the authorization field into a white seal.

“I dislike voluntary disadvantages,” he said.

“Practice may improve you.”

Orra released one unwilling breath of laughter. For half a second, the alcove contained three tired people rather than three offices arranging blame.

Then the journal lock cleared.

Mara committed each object separately. Challenge record. Route journal. Output queue. Duty acknowledgments. Oscillator stamp. Service custody. Hash confirmations crossed into the capture wafer one by one while the timer descended.

The final transfer completed with forty-three seconds remaining.

Mara waited until the wafer reported six accepted objects and no unresolved references inside the declared boundary. She sealed it with her stud. Vale added his mark beside hers, neither signature capable of substituting for the other.

Orra disconnected the wafer and passed it across the work surface.

They examined it on the independent reader, not on P-3. The reader possessed no Planning route and no authority to alter the captured objects. After verifying the boundary, signatures, and oscillator stamp, it rendered the session map.

P3-77A opened at 18:06:12 under badge PL-041-K and closed at 18:22:49.

The route journal showed a short, purposeful sequence. The session viewed C-4’s numbered laminate allocation, T-19’s replacement path, and the reconciliation hopper’s opening schedule. Equivalent mass appeared in that hopper three shifts later.

“Preparation,” Vale said.

“Consistent with preparation,” Mara corrected. “Not proof of the depositor.”

“The available distinction is narrow.”

“It remains available.”

The sequence established that the session had assembled a view of material, movement, and the point where equivalent mass could enter accounting. It did not authenticate the later material, the person carrying it, or the hand that opened the hopper.

Mara linked the events and left the actor field unresolved.

The output queue retained T-19’s release transmission to the calibration annex at 18:18. Its acknowledgment named no human signer. The receipt field contained CART-6E.

Orra bent closer. “Our carts are officers now.”

“Only when liability is hungry,” Mara said.

CART-6E’s preceding task ended at the annex. Its next authenticated task began at 18:31. The thirteen minutes between acknowledgment and that task carried no named human receipt and no authenticated cart assignment.

Vale read both entries. “Enough time for the head to leave the annex.”

“Enough unassigned time,” Mara said. “Whether it moved is not established.”

She entered the interval into the consolidated sequence and added the cart task record to the preservation request. Whoever answered for stores custody would have to answer for those thirteen minutes rather than cite the cart’s acknowledgment as continuity.

The local T-19 approval had been created at 18:16:31. Its originating inspector field was opened, cleared, and passed through route identity QN-4/NULL.

Mara loaded the preserved A-17 extraction packet beside it without merging the custody sources. QN-4/NULL appeared in that packet’s activation envelope as well. Ordinary Planning traffic contained no matching artifact.

“Same concealment method,” Vale said.

“Same abnormal route artifact. Relationship supported; authorship unproved.”

“Do you object to every noun?”

“Only the ambitious ones.”

He expanded both route trees to the point where QN-4/NULL entered. The recurrence survived comparison, but he did not force his preferred description into the record.

Mara placed the blank approval, C-4 fabrication, and A-17 access on the verified sequence. The approval preceded the witnessed fabrication by nine days. Both preceded the brief A-17 access window.

Renn’s duration objection therefore resolved in one direction only. The A-17 window allowed carriage and installation of a prepared spacer. It did not allow fabrication.

Mara recorded that limit and no more.

She then drafted the preservation hold over the captured image, P3-77A, badge assignment register, relevant duty rota, output queue, service record, and custody hardware. Planning could continue using P-3’s ordinary functions. Any terminal failure required isolation and notice to both joint custodians. The service panel could not be opened until a hardware custodian arrived and the examination was witnessed.

Mara signed. Vale added the failure-isolation clause, read the amended hold from beginning to end, and countersigned.

Orra entered the divided custody, checked the object count, and recorded no variance.

“Now the service record,” Mara said.
