    ## Chapter 17: The Closing Position

    The preservation seal had been green for nineteen minutes when Mara carried PSB-TM-44 out of the turnover vault.

    The case handle bit through her gloves. Spin increased along the route to Spine B, adding weight by degrees rather than courtesy. Vale walked on the opposite side with two fingers beneath the secondary handle, not helping enough to confuse custody. Orra followed with the sealed controller capture against her chest and the dumb optical reader clipped to her belt.

    Every junction required them to stop beneath a witness lens, show three green indicators, and state that no seal had changed.

    Behind the walls, fans drove a vibration through Mara’s teeth. Spine B was returning from the narrow preservation hold imposed immediately after the controller capture. Workers waited on the other side of locked service doors for permission to resume the ordinary labor that kept air ordinary.

    Sena Tair joined through a fixed maintenance pickup.

    “You have nine minutes before the thermal carts must divert,” she said. A pump hammered behind her in irregular triples. “After that, Bay Six loses its cooling allocation.”

    “We will not hold the entire spine,” Vale said.

    “You are walking through the route under a red seal.”

    “We noticed,” Mara said.

    At the service alcove, Orra ordered a mandatory pause. Mara set the case on a ceramic shelf without releasing her handle until Vale had taken the opposing hold and Orra had logged the transfer of weight.

    A water bulb waited in the wall recess. Mara drank half and passed it to Vale.

    He examined the remaining volume. “Is this an evidentiary allocation?”

    “It is water.”

    “An unusually broad interpretation.”

    Orra took the bulb from him. “Both of you are becoming personable. I object.”

    For several breaths, no one spoke. Mara let the cold water clear the metallic taste from her mouth. The alcove fan stirred loose hair against her cheek. Beneath the familiar heat of machinery lay a sharp citrus odor—the solvent used on optical rails.

    She looked toward the handoff bay.

    “Sena, when was this alcove last cleaned?”

    “Scheduled cleaning was six days ago.”

    “This is fresh.”

    Vale leaned near the rail without touching it. “Strongest on the bay side.”

    Orra opened a witness image. Under oblique light, the rail showed a pale wiped band. Dust remained along the alcove edge, but fine fibers and solvent residue feathered toward them from the counter.

    “The ventilation runs from the handoff counter toward this alcove,” Mara said.

    “When the bay is active,” Sena replied. “Closure triggers a brief fan increase.”

    The sealed controller capture recorded that increase six seconds after the cradle beam broke. The residue had dried in the direction of that airflow. A wipe made before closure would have collected the ordinary oxide film deposited during the event. Instead, the cleaned band cut through it.

    Mara dictated the bounded finding. “The rail was wiped after the recorded closure and while closure ventilation remained available. Seizure imaging shows the band already present. Cleaning therefore occurred after closure and before evidence seizure.”

    “Authorization?” Vale asked.

    Sena’s answer came beneath the pump noise. “No order visible to pressure maintenance.”

    “An accountable order should exist,” Mara said. “Absence from this channel does not establish absence everywhere.”

    Orra recorded the correction before Vale could object. They resumed the route.

    The Spine B handoff bay had been designed to make custody look simple. A receiver station stood behind a waist-high cradle gate. Across a transparent pressure shield, the turnover counter held the countersignature slot and closure lever. A fixed rail connected them, but the shield prevented either occupant from crossing between stations during an active handoff.

    Mara saw the trap in the design immediately. Records treated the rail as one place. Bodies did not.

    Two maintenance workers waited beyond the outer stripe with a filter cart between them. A thermal carrier had already been redirected down the long loop. Its operator gave Vale a look normally reserved for leaking seals.

    “Start the delay ledger,” Vale told Orra. “Every diverted cart and lost work interval.”

    “Already running.”

    They placed PSB-TM-44, the controller capture, and the optical strip under divided custody at the bay’s evidence bench. Orra opened the package through its original witnessed seam. Inside, the empty ceramic key cradle retained its crescent contact abrasion. A sealed retention sleeve held Dalen Rusk’s original mortality credential.

    The token’s chipped edge matched the optical strip’s insertion scar. Subsurface stress geometry aligned under polarized light, and the migrated contact resistance reproduced the strip’s uneven burn without powering the credential beyond passive measurement.

    “Original token,” Orra said. “Not a derivative.”

    “Record the method and its limits,” Mara replied.

    Orra did. Dalen Rusk had died eleven years and forty-three days before the handoff. An authenticated sealed authority had prevented destruction and revocation of his original credential. The issuing signatory remained masked. None of that identified who had brought the token here.

    They replaced the evidence cradle with an inert duplicate carrying pressure film and a passive optical layer. Orra fixed three independent cameras on the stations.

    “First pass,” Mara said. “Observed mechanics only.”

    She took the receiver side and followed Sena’s remote instructions. The rail delivered the inert cradle. Mara set her palm into the shaped recess, compressed the receiver plate, and closed the cradle.

    Across the shield, Vale depressed the closure lever and inserted a blank credential into the countersignature slot.

    The beam broke. The optical layer burned. Six seconds later, the fans rose.

    Orra inspected the output. Mara’s forearm had reproduced Sena’s compression crease. Vale’s credential pressure had crossed it during formation, widening where the cradle closed. The lever load, beam interruption, optical burn, and ventilation response aligned with the sealed controller timestamps.

    “One event,” Orra said. “Two occupied stations.”

    “Second pass,” Vale said. “Test single-person operation.”

    He began at the receiver station. Keeping pressure on the receiver plate, he reached toward the counter. The shield stopped his shoulder well short of the closure lever.
