Chapter 34: The Inventory That Lied

For several minutes after shutdown, no one moved close enough to touch it. The residual heat withdrew slowly through the service face and into the bay’s circulation, but the usual tremor of regulated power was gone. Its indicators stayed black. No status pulse crossed the panel, no diagnostic lamp revived, and no internal relay clicked beneath the housing. Stale insulation displaced the hot-metal smell of the shutdown, leaving the air dry and faintly bitter.
A maintenance crew waited beyond the marked boundary. Their carts, tools, and folded barrier screens occupied half the passage. Every delay cost them floor time, and everyone present knew it. The crew chief checked the wall clock, then the sealed service face, then the three witnesses standing between him and the blocked bay. He said nothing while the evidence package completed its verification cycle.
Mara reviewed the shutdown terms one last time. The record already contained the event sequence, instrument state, and witness identities. It also contained the ordinary prohibitions against unauthorized handling. Those were not enough.
She entered the final condition herself, speaking each word as the Registry terminal transcribed it.
“Permanent shutdown. No reopening, repowering, successor addressing, simulation, or destructive sampling. My dissent from any such act remains attached to the evidence.”
The terminal displayed the clause without correction.
Mara authenticated it and stepped aside.
Orra read from the first word through the final period. Her eyes paused briefly at successor addressing, then moved on. She signed beneath Mara.
Vale took longer. He read the clause once in silence, shifted the terminal closer, and read it again. His expression tightened at the breadth of the restriction.
“This excludes controlled reconstruction,” he said.
“It excludes reopening, repowering, successor addressing, simulation, and destructive sampling,” Mara replied.
“I can read.”
“Then your question has answered itself.”
Vale looked toward the cage. Nothing on its face acknowledged the attention. At last he placed his countersignature below Orra’s, adding Continuity’s authority to a condition Continuity would almost certainly dislike.
The evidence package sealed. A thin confirmation line crossed the terminal, then vanished into its ordinary idle display.
Only then did the crew chief approach the boundary. He pointed past Mara at the blocked bay, where temporary barriers constrained the service route and forced his crew’s equipment into the passage.
“Second heat inherits this mess.”
“Charge Continuity,” Vale said.
The chief’s gaze moved to him. “Your budget office will object.”
“That is how they acknowledge reality.”
A mechanic behind the chief made a sound that might have been amusement, but stopped when Vale looked over. The crew began the slow work of rerouting around the boundary without entering it. Metal wheels grated against the deck. Someone folded one barrier and opened another. The cage remained untouched.
Outside the bay, where the air circulation was cooler and the maintenance noise less direct, Mara removed a nutrient strip from her pocket. Its wrapper had been crushed flat during the shutdown procedure. She opened it, measured the strip with her thumb, and divided it into three unequal pieces.
Orra took the largest without apology. She had spent more time under the service face than either of them and treated the allocation as self-evident.
Vale accepted the smallest. He held it between two fingers, studying its damp green surface.
“This appears punitive.”
“It is algae,” Mara said. “Punishment requires intent.”
“Unequal distribution suggests intent.”
“Unequal appetite suggests efficiency.”
Orra had already eaten half of hers. “You can file a ration objection.”
“With whom?”
“Continuity,” Mara said.
Vale ate the strip.
They did not remain long enough to finish resting. The cage was dead, but the shutdown record had preserved a discrepancy that could not be resolved in the bay. They transferred the isolated record into a shielded evidence carrier and carried it together to a Registry reader. Mara kept one hand on the carrier seal. Vale held the escrow authorization. Orra walked half a step behind them, watching passage traffic and checking that no one approached close enough to force a custody notation.
The Registry reader stood in a narrow verification room off the main route. Its work surface had room for one evidence carrier, three authentication plates, and little else. Mara locked the door, confirmed the reader’s isolation state, and seated the carrier.
She aligned the shutdown record’s authenticated timestamp with habitat power telemetry. The two systems used different reporting intervals, so she expanded the comparison until individual changes could be placed against the cage hold and branch transfer. Vale produced the service ledgers under joint escrow. Each ledger opened only after his authorization and Mara’s countersignature, and each closed when either of them removed contact from the authentication plate.
Orra worked from the switching sequence. She tested ordinary explanations first: scheduled transfers, maintenance loads, regulator correction, delayed meter reconciliation, and residual current reported after isolation. Each possibility had to fit both the timing and the measured shape.
The rise began after the cage hold opened.
Mara marked the first authenticated change and checked it against the habitat telemetry. The increase lasted eight seconds. It ended before T-19 inherited the branch. That boundary remained clear across both records. Whatever had happened occupied the interval after the hold released and before the branch passed to T-19.
Vale enlarged the installed supply trace. “No demand flag.”
“There is no matching demand anywhere on the installed supply,” Mara said.
Orra adjusted the scale, separating the pulse from the baseline. “And not buffer decay.”
The leading edge rose too sharply. Buffer decay would have sloped, even under a reporting delay. This trace presented a squared leading edge, held, then ended. The shape had been softened slightly by the telemetry interval, but not enough to make it accidental.
“Timed external feed,” Vale said.
Mara kept her attention on the trace. “Deliberate switching.”
Vale looked at her. “That is the distinction you want to preserve?”
“It is the distinction the evidence permits. Purpose and operator remain unknown.”
“A timed feed is not incidental.”
“Neither is it a named person.”
Orra moved the junction logs into the comparison field before the argument could widen. She overlaid feeder state, compensation behavior, and local monitoring. One by one, she ruled out the paths that could not have carried the current. Every feeder except SJ-4C-12 either remained isolated through the interval or showed a compensating load elsewhere in the network.
SJ-4C-12 alone carried the missing current.
Its monitor, however, did not provide a complete record. Inside the eight-second pulse lay six seconds of blank data. The absence began after the current rose and ended before it fell, leaving only the outer edges visible through the other authenticated systems.
Orra ran the alignment again. The blank remained in the same place.
“Six seconds,” Vale said.
“Inside eight,” Mara replied.
“Convenient.”
