Chapter 27: Before the Margin Closes
by inkadminEleven minutes after they arrested the maintenance branch, the coolant left in HL-B’s external loop surrendered its last stored cold.
Until then, the system had coasted on what remained in the pipes. Residual circulation carried a diminishing reserve through the collar housing—not active support, not enough to satisfy any service definition, but enough to postpone the consequence of shutting down the feed. The temperature line wandered inside a narrow band while Mara watched. Instrument noise could have explained the variations. So could trapped coolant changing position, or the final movement of a system no longer being driven.
The line flattened.
It held so evenly that the display appeared frozen. Mara checked the witness clock against the active record. Both advanced. The sensor continued reporting.
The first upward increment appeared at the graph’s edge.
A second followed.
Orra lowered herself until her eyes were level with the external assembly, keeping her hands behind her knees. She examined the coolant line, collar housing, service selector, and sealed cabinet as separate boundaries. Urgency did not make them interchangeable. The maintenance branch had been arrested. The cabinet had not been opened. No authority existed yet for contact with either the collar or its controls.
“Stand-off inspection only,” she said.
Mara marked the statement into the record.
Vale faced the sealed cabinet. The rising graph reflected across its surface in pale horizontal bands. Fear made him more courteous.
“Doctor Venn, our restraint is now producing measurable harm.”
“Our restraint exposed a dependency,” Mara said. “That does not grant either of us a hand.”
The temperature climbed another hundredth.
Orra shifted her head several centimeters to catch the work light across the lower rim of the collar. Her body stopped.
“Do not release the service point.”
Vale looked from her to the housing. “What is it?”
“Reflective discontinuity at the lower edge. Possible recent score.” Orra leaned no closer. “I will not characterize it from here, and I will not touch the housing before preservation.”
Mara moved the recorder onto its articulated stand without crossing the marked floor boundary. Its optical head extended toward the collar, leaving air between the lens and the metal. She increased magnification.
A narrow crescent appeared on the display. It cut across the dull surface beneath the selector, sharply reflective where the surrounding finish had oxidized. The curve lay near the path a driver might take, but geometry was not motive, and resemblance was not attribution.
“Visible before intervention,” Mara dictated. “No physical contact by any participant. No conclusion as to cause.”
She locked the frame to three permanent references: the cast seam on the housing, the lower left fastener, and the stamped service index beside the selector. The recorder calculated the crescent’s dimensions from the known spacing between those fixed points. No scale touched the assembly.
Vale read the room clock aloud.
“Fourteen twenty-eight, eleven point six.”
Orra read the independent service chronometer.
“Fourteen twenty-eight, eleven point six. Agreement within one tenth.”
Mara captured the mark under direct light, raking light, and polarized contrast. A wider frame showed the untouched service point and every surrounding fitting. Another included Orra’s empty hands, Vale behind the custody line, and the full cabinet boundary. The seals remained flat. Their fibers showed no lifting, tearing, compression, or displacement.
She hashed the image set into the active record and displayed the result to both witnesses.
“Geometry preserved,” Vale said.
“Preservation witnessed,” Orra confirmed. “I continue to refuse contact until the instrument is active.”
The graph rose again.
Mara opened the witness-triad emergency instrument. Its permitted act occupied the center of the screen beside the thermal trace:
Restore lawful circulation through HL-B’s standing external service loop.
Nothing else.
No cabinet opening. No remote command or software bypass. No interior contact, activation, test, removal, or inspection of contents. No transfer of custody. The external selector could be returned to its lawful service position; the sealed cabinet remained outside the instrument.
Mara assigned the roles. She would control evidentiary limits and could stop the work on preservation grounds. Vale would bear equal Continuity liability and could not convert the emergency into access to HL-B. Orra would control every physical tool and could halt either official if the recorded scope expanded.
Each role required the other two. No substitute could act remotely.
“Restoring cooling will alter HL-B’s thermal history,” Mara recorded. “It may erase traces of residual decay and uncontrolled warming. The intervention is contaminating despite being necessary, limited, and reversible.”
Vale entered concurrence. “Leaving the system untouched is no longer evidentially neutral. I accept equal liability for restoration within the stated boundary and no authority beyond it.”
Orra reviewed both entries.
“I accept technical control,” she said. “Either of you reaches past the service selector, asks for an interior reading, or changes the method without amendment, I stop.”
“I would expect nothing less reassuring,” Mara said.
Orra’s mouth tightened. “That was almost gratitude.”
“Do not make it inadmissible.”
The temperature gained another hundredth.
Mara signed and presented her key. The distributor recognized her evidentiary role but denied activation.
Vale signed. His Continuity credential joined hers; the distributor denied the pair.
Orra completed the instrument with her physical service token.
Three acknowledgments turned green. The emergency record sealed its scope, started the intervention timer, and released the exterior service-point cover with a mechanical snap.
Only then did Orra reach for the tool case.
She broke its outer seal under the recorder. The separating film made a dry tearing sound. Inside, each implement rested in a fitted recess: captive actuation bridge, collar driver, handling grips, seal tabs. She rotated the bridge for the witnesses, showing its existing abrasions and the clean edges of its keyed face. Mara recorded them before Orra exposed the working section.
“The bridge carries no coolant,” Orra said. “It moves the selector. If the selector does not retain service position independently, we withdraw and reassess.”
“Recorded,” Mara said.
