    ## Chapter 14: The Name Beneath

    The dead station still had power.

    Not the casing. Mara made Orra say that twice before she let Facilities open the south maintenance chase.

    “The casing identified as P3-COL-7 was reclaimed forty-three days before the collection,” Orra said into the witness recorder. “The current voltage is on another object.”

    Vale crouched beside the chase hatch with one hand on the manual release. Amber condenser warnings crossed his slate in orderly rows. Behind the wall, something clicked at seven-second intervals: a relay still acknowledging traffic no active map admitted sending.

    Mara held up the first artifact.

    The decommission roll carried its own date, custody hash, and optical seal. Its images showed the original P3-COL-7 casing before removal: gray shell, oval shelf aperture, two repaired corners, identifier stamped above the collection throat. The final frame showed the empty mounting bay after the casing had been lifted clear.

    There was no sheet in the throat. No collection event. No Witness Copy 18-03-4.

    Mara recorded that absence without enlarging it into a conclusion.

    “Artifact One identifies the retired casing and its pre-retirement condition,” she said. “It does not depict, contain, or authenticate the later witness copy.”

    Orra marked agreement.

    Vale glanced at the alarm rows. “And Artifact Two does not exist until we expose the junction.”

    “Until we capture it,” Mara corrected. “The junction exists whether we preserve its account or not.”

    “It also carries the south condenser acknowledgment path.”

    “Which is why you have not opened the hatch.”

    His courtesy sharpened, the way it did when fear had already completed its calculations. “If I isolate the board before rerouting, three condenser alarms lose acknowledgment. If I leave it carrying live traffic while Orra inspects, Facilities can claim the buffer changed under examination.”

    “North loop?” Mara asked.

    “Available with latency.”

    “Bound it.”

    “Two hundred eighty milliseconds in the worst modeled relay condition.”

    “Modeling is not continuity.”

    “No,” Vale said. “It is what we have before testing.”

    He opened the reroute control but did not authorize it. The witness recorder placed a red border around the pending command.

    “My operational dissent,” he said, “is that preservation of an unidentified maintenance buffer does not justify unbounded alarm delay.”

    “Accepted,” Mara said. “My preservation dissent is that Facilities may not purge or replace the junction before independent capture merely because its designation is absent from the active map.”

    Orra shifted her tool case against the wall. “My dissent is that both of you are making the floor colder by taking so long.”

    Vale looked down at the metal grating. “That one may be difficult to remedy.”

    It was almost humor. In the maintenance chase, with dust graying Orra’s knees and condenser warnings counting upward, the smallness of it loosened something behind Mara’s ribs.

    Then Vale authorized the reroute.

    North-loop relays answered in sequence. Orra watched a separate diagnostic slate while Mara read the timestamps aloud. Vale injected three simulated condenser faults, then one live low-priority maintenance alarm. Each reached Operations, repeated through the north loop, and returned acknowledged.

    “Maximum measured latency, two hundred forty-one milliseconds,” Orra said. “No loss across four tests.”

    “Record the model bound as well,” Mara said.

    Vale did. “Two hundred eighty milliseconds. Red abort remains unchanged.”

    Only then did he release the hatch.

    Warm, dry air came out carrying the smell of old insulation. The cavity behind the wall was barely deep enough for Orra’s shoulders. She entered on one hip, lamp clipped beneath her chin, while Mara and Vale remained outside the marked contact boundary.

    The junction sat behind two newer coolant lines: a narrow board in a maintenance cradle, powered through a braided lead that disappeared toward the old P-3 collection bay. Someone had painted MNT-SOUTH-12 on the cradle in white seal compound.

    Beneath it, partly hidden by the retaining bar, remained the older stamped identifier.

    P3-COL-7.

    Vale leaned closer but did not cross the boundary. “A label proves reuse, not function.”

    “Agreed,” Mara said.

    Orra photographed the cradle before touching it. She placed scale tabs beside the fasteners, captured the intact dust at each edge, and documented the power lead from the board to the south distribution junction. The lead’s service braid matched the material visible in the decommission images, but she did not rely on appearance. With an insulated mirror, she read the acknowledgment board’s etched assembly number.

    Mara opened the retirement packet.

    Nine hours before P3-COL-7’s official retirement, a physical reassignment line had moved its acknowledgment assembly, power lead, and local routing into a maintenance function. The new designation was MNT-SOUTH-12. Continued low-load power was authorized.

    The responsible countersign identifier was blank.

    The later retirement entry removed the casing from active service without listing the surviving assembly as an endpoint. On paper, P3-COL-7 had vanished. In the wall, its acknowledgment lineage had changed names and remained powered.

    Orra compared the etched number with the reassignment line, then read both into the recorder.

    “Physical inspection confirms the installed board is the assembly transferred from the original P3-COL-7 installation to MNT-SOUTH-12. The casing and successor junction are distinct objects. The hardware lineage is continuous.”

    “Any sign the board was removed after reassignment?” Mara asked.

    “Not without extracting it.”

    “Then do not extract it.”

    Vale’s gaze moved to the local buffer housing. “Facilities can clone the board and restore service inside an hour.”

    “A clone would preserve function,” Mara said. “Not necessarily residue.”

    “You have not established useful residue.”

    “No. That is why destruction would be premature.”
