    The cabinet answered cooling with small metal taps.

    Each contraction sounded separately inside HL-B’s layered housing. There was no operational rhythm to them, only heat leaving metal, but in the inspection bay every tap carried.

    Mara held her palm near the sealed access plate without touching it. Cold reached across the gap. Under Orra’s inspection light, three crescent scars crossed the left guide, close enough to overlap but not identical. One cut through the dark residue. Another vanished beneath old sealant.

    Vale stood beyond the marked boundary with the order slate against his forearm. All status indicators remained dark.

    “One idle cycle,” he said. “No carrier.”

    It was a limited concession. A powered cycle would show the drum and brake timing without introducing material into either path.

    “No.” Orra kept both hands on the isolator bar.

    Vale looked at her. “You’re refusing a carrierless test?”

    “I’m refusing power.”

    “The order permits functional verification.”

    “The preserved state does not.”

    Mara placed her custody key beside Orra’s witness token on the steel bench.

    “Restarting it would replace retained state with ours,” she said. “The diagnostic sweep would rewrite transient counters. The brake controller would register a new release. Thermal compensation would restart from the present temperature.”

    Vale studied the dark indicators. He did not call the changes minor.

    He opened the amendment field and entered: NO POWERED REENACTMENT. OPERATOR REFUSAL PROTECTED.

    After he signed, Orra eased the pressure in her fingers but did not release the isolator.

    The passive induction reader supplied no wake signal and requested no response from HL-B. Mara verified that before allowing its leads across the boundary. Orra connected the drum pickup, brake coil, contact ring, and maintenance interlock while Vale matched each channel to the inspection order.

    The corresponding calibration records verified against the signed maintenance register. Mara displayed raw counters, temperatures, and pulse spacing without normalization. The event remained fixed inside the established forty-seven-minute maintenance interval, between interlock opening and the signed return to service.

    Calibration pulses bracketed the event. The later series differed from the earlier by eleven milliseconds.

    “Housing correction?” Orra asked.

    Mara opened the permitted compensation table. Uneven cooling could account for another four milliseconds if every tolerance was applied in the direction most favorable to ordinary drift.

    “Not drift,” Orra said.

    “Not enough drift,” Mara corrected.

    Vale recorded both values and their sources.

    The contact-ring trace carried maintenance hum around two sharp changes. Mara filtered nothing.

    Two physical contact edges stood 9.7 seconds apart.

    Each met the archived duration required for carrier contact. Between them, the trace did not show the state sequence of a completed ordinary cycle.

    Vale checked the raw counters, then counted directly from the recorded clock intervals.

    “HL-B’s authenticated minimum closed cycle was 12.4 seconds.”

    “Under its established configuration,” Mara said.

    He added the qualification. The minimum came from HL-B’s signed operating limits before isolation. A closed cycle could take longer. It could not take 9.7 seconds without an abnormal mechanical condition.

    One carrier completing two ordinary closed cycles was excluded.

    Orra opened the retired R-series service specification beside the trace rather than over it. The diagrams showed an emergency-retention geometry designed for extraction work: a first carrier could be parked in the left service recess while a separate jaw released the drum brake before custody closure. A second carrier could then reach the freed drum through another physical route.

    She rotated the diagram to the inspection camera’s angle. The extraction leaf’s documented sweep crossed the same area as HL-B’s scored guide.

    The correspondence did not date the scars or identify their cause. No clamp, jaw, or retired fitting had been recovered from HL-B or entered into custody.

    “Can you demonstrate the geometry without moving anything here?” Vale asked.

    “On the training drum,” Orra said.

    The decommissioned training drum stood at the far bench, stripped of control electronics and open on both sides. Vale extended the recorded boundary around it. HL-B remained dark, isolated, and untouched.

    Orra selected the matching fittings from the sealed training set. Mara witnessed the part numbers and dimensions; Vale recorded that every component belonged to the training assembly.

    Orra seated a blank carrier in the first jaw and moved the linkage by hand. The carrier entered the left recess and remained parked there. The ordinary custody path did not close around it.

    She turned the drum until the brake resisted, then advanced the extraction leaf. Its second jaw met the brake release. A few degrees of hand pressure passed through the linkage.

    The brake gave with a hard click.

    With the first carrier still parked, Orra introduced a second blank carrier through the presentation route.

    A second contact followed before custody closed.

    She stopped the assembly with both paths exposed: one carrier retained in the recess, the other at the freed drum. Vale leaned toward the boundary without crossing it.

    “One viable dual-path configuration,” he said. “Consistent with one legal presenter identity across an unclosed interval.”
