    Chapter Index

Vale’s half of the freeze authorization crossed into Orra’s record.

The transfer took less than a second. Its consequences occupied the compartment.

Blue custody lines closed around the authenticated states of the operator-key housing, the maintenance bridge, the hatch witnesses, and the reseal recorded at 13:56:51. Orra checked each boundary twice before sealing the joint instruction.

“Freeze complete,” she said. “No opening, adjustment, removal, sampling, or induced actuation without both authorizations.”

None of the lines granted ownership. They marked the places where ownership had stopped being enough.

Mara remained crouched beneath the C-8 hatch. Her left foot had gone numb, and the pressure brace pressed a hard edge into her shoulder. Shifting would bring her sleeve across the old dust beside the repair.

Vale lowered his slate. “The two device states are preserved.”

    “The visible states,” Mara said.

His attention returned to the resin above the concealed housings. It was older than the fresh witness fields and newer than the panel beneath it. The authenticated closure time had no paired local task number. Now that they had established two separate manual acts below the repair, the reseal was no longer merely an administrative defect.

    It might be a route.

“Opening it would answer that quickly,” Vale said.

“It would replace the question with damage.”

“I did not propose opening it.”

“You arranged the sentence so urgency could.”

Fear made him more courteous, never less. “Then state your method.”

“Passive mapping. Light, airflow, vibration, surface temperature, dimensions, and noncontact material association. No excitation through frozen hardware. No sample.”

Vale studied the repair and then the custody lines. “Accepted, provided we stop at any undeclared authority boundary.”

    “That was implied.”

“I prefer restraints that survive implication.”

    “So do I.”

Orra entered the restriction before either of them reached for an instrument.

Mara fixed a raking source to the declared hatch frame and lowered its angle until every raised grain of dust cast a narrow shadow. Beneath the repair, the old layer remained continuous except for a clean crescent near the lower edge.

Its regularity required preservation. Its incompleteness forbade a name.

There were no finger ridges. The visible arc did not preserve enough boundary to identify a tool, and nothing at its margin established when the mark had been made.

Mara photographed it from three angles. A scale placed outside the dust field gave her the dimensions without contact.

“Clean crescent preserved,” she dictated. “Maker, instrument, and age unassigned.”

Vale enlarged Orra’s shared image. “The radius is compatible with the service collar.”

    “Compatible is not causal.”

“It is also compatible with access.”

“So is every empty space near a door.”

She withdrew the scale before her sleeve could drift. Cold had worked through the fabric along her forearm. C-8’s declared circulation was weak, but air near the reseal moved with more purpose than the ventilation drawing allowed.

A filament wand held two millimeters above the upper margin bent inward.

The opposite edge produced less movement in the same direction. At the lower-left side, the deflection strengthened.

Orra preserved the wand identity, stand-off distance, and local circulation baseline. “The movement exceeds declared compartment drift.”

“Directed inward flow,” Mara said. “Source and medium undetermined.”

“Not a dead cavity,” Vale said.

“Not proven to be a cavity.”

    “A route, then.”

    “Not yet.”

This time he let the correction stand without answering.

Space made the vibration check awkward. Mara anchored the laser head to the hatch frame and angled it across the repair without touching the panel. Orra removed the known signatures of the compartment fan, pressure brace, and their instruments from the live display.

A low harmonic remained beneath the reseal.

Mara moved the reading point in measured increments. The signal strengthened below the resin, narrowed along the concealed collar’s left edge, then divided. One branch aligned with the authenticated operator-key housing. The other approached the maintenance bridge assembly.

Beside Orra’s live map, Vale opened the certified C-8 boundary drawing. Hatch frame, brace, declared cable throat, pressure-monitor run.

    Nothing occupied the measured line.

    “Prior revision,” Mara said.

Vale called it himself. The older drawing omitted the route as well. So did the closure schedule associated with the 13:56:51 reseal.

“No declared service path,” he said. “No paired local task number.”

“That does not make the reseal unauthorized.”

“No. It leaves its authority absent from the records presently available.”

They knew the event had occurred. They did not know who had performed it, what authority had been invoked, or whether the repair had closed ordinary work, concealed access, or prepared it.

    The harmonic continued downward.

Eighteen centimeters below the reseal, its strongest line crossed the certified custody boundary. It did not fade at the crossing. The signal passed behind the pressure brace into space neither drawing admitted.

Orra stopped the overlay. “I can authenticate the crossing. I cannot classify what crosses.”

    “Then do not,” Mara said.

Orra marked a line without assigning it a medium.

“Boundary relation established,” Mara dictated. “The authenticated reseal overlies an undeclared harmonic path crossing the certified boundary. Contents, purpose, and authority remain unconfirmed.”

Vale placed the finding into the shared record under his own authority.

The act cost him whichever explanation survived. If the route proved legitimate, Continuity’s certified drawing was incomplete. If it proved hostile, a concealed path crossed his controlled boundary. Refusing the finding would only preserve evidence of his refusal.

    He chose the evidence.

Thermal mapping required them to wait.
