    At the next bell, Mara, Kest, and the Examiner presented themselves outside Tertia’s closed west threshold.

    Through the speaking plate, two exterior witnesses reported that the transfer locker stood empty, both doors had been inspected, and the interior release was locked. Tertia accepted the report as testimony, not perception. West Trestle Two lay beyond her stone.

    Mara displayed M-48-C’s boxed key at the witness slot without passing it through. Its original cord and seal remained intact. The Examiner read the accompanying status sheet aloud.

    “M-48-C fixed in place. No opening, cycle, removal, or service entry during this operation.”

    The compact named all three entrants and permitted exterior reconstruction, isolation of C-3’s two accessible controls, and bounded examination of the cutoff. E4 would remain sealed. U-31-A, U-31-B, and M-48-C could not be disturbed. Authority would end when all three admission leaves returned to the lawful side and were voided.

    Letters formed beside the slot.

    The panel withdrew. The Examiner entered first, then Mara and Kest. Their leaves seated in the inner rail, and the threshold closed behind them.

    C-3’s cutoff occupied the west wall. Its pointer bent inward, its bright edge held under a fine, sustained strain. Kest placed his frame on the recorded marks. The zero bead remained joined to its reference notch by old wax; dust around the nearest sealed closure was undisturbed.

    The pointer flexed once toward Tertia’s wall and held.

    Kest compared the branch sheet with the bent axis and the three scars beneath the cutoff’s upper lip. “The common throat arrives too steeply. Scars one and two align with the C-3 west return.”

    The Examiner required the tolerance entered before sampling.

    Kest took three numbered grit lifts. Samples one and two showed iron-dark particles mixed with lime. The third showed no matching residue to the unaided eye.

    “Visible recovery differs,” Kest said. “Cause not yet established.”

    He pressed clean witness wax into each scar without crossing its damaged margin. Under the bounded lens frame, he and the Examiner compared the three impressions in turn.

    “Depth matches,” Kest said. “Pitch matches. Terminal curve matches.”

    The Examiner rotated the third impression. Its face was broader, but the underlying curve remained identical.

    “Same contact geometry,” he said. “Different contact-face width.”

    Kest opened the third lift inside a shielded examination tray. A blank lift from the adjacent undamaged plate went beneath the second lens as a contamination control. The blank remained clear. Within the third scar’s deformed grain, several pale flakes caught the light.

    “Non-ferrous,” Kest said.

    He measured the flakes, then the difference between the third impression and the first two. The added width of the third scar corresponded exactly to the recovered material’s thickness within the frame’s recorded limit.

    The Examiner required the alternatives addressed individually.

    Cleaning was excluded because the flakes remained embedded beneath the scar’s folded grain. Poor transfer and insufficient residue could not explain the recovered particles or the broader wax face. Failed lifting was excluded by the intact grain pattern on the third lift and the successful blank control. Unrelated contamination was excluded by the flakes’ placement along the pressure edge and their absence from the adjacent plate and control lift.

    Kest set down the measuring needle. “The third scar was made by the same contact geometry as the first two, operating through a pale non-ferrous sleeve.”

    Tertia cut the conclusion into the examination leaf.

    SLEEVE TRANSFER. NOT A SEPARATE CONTACT ROUTE. SLEEVE SOURCE UNIDENTIFIED.

    “Accepted,” said the Examiner.

    The scar spacing supplied a second limit. The outer contact positions lay farther apart than one access socket could reach. Kest tried the listed single-socket frames without touching the evidence; none could reproduce the spacing.

    “Paired-access contact tool,” he said, “or linked tooling with two separated control points.”

    “One operator?” Mara asked.

    “Not established.”

    “Multiple operators?”

    “Not established.”

    “Apparatus?”

    “Also not established.”

    A code beneath the cutoff’s worn registration edge became legible when Kest laid the lawful viewing scale beside it. Mara held the recovered retrieval minute inside its custody sleeve. The code preserved on its cut margin matched the plate character for character.

    The match linked the retrieval authorization to a source with access to both dispatch procedure and upper mechanical records. It did not identify the filer, operator, responsible office, recipient, exact access point, or complete route.

    Mara requested isolation of both accessible C-3 controls.

    Tertia answered on the wall.

    WHO ACCEPTS DAMAGE IF ISOLATION TRANSFERS THE LOAD?

    The first draft assigned consequences below the cutoff to Tertia while reserving everything above it.

    REJECTED. THAT ALLOCATES MY ROOMS AND NOT THEIR CREW.

    Mara did not ask her to be reasonable. Tertia appreciated this restraint.

    The revised liability leaf stated that Tertia authorized and Mara directed both isolations. They shared responsibility for damage above or below proximately resulting from either operation, pending proof of cause. Fault, ownership, agency, and attribution remained reserved.

    Lead Closer Iven accepted through the exterior plate. Tertia, Mara, Iven, and either witness pair received immediate stop authority, requiring obedience before explanation.
