    ## Chapter 29: The Face Against the Wall

    “The contact brace may answer the second strike,” the Examiner said.

    His voice carried through the cold ribs surrounding the test fixture.

    “Then E4 remains closed,” Tertia replied. “We surrender the replaceable part.”

    The closure’s blank seam offered no latch, hinge, or useful concession. Beside it, the damaged fixture waited beneath inspection lamps, its brace still covering the transition between the broad first wound and the narrow third scar.

    “Removal prevents another test,” the Examiner said.

    “That is one of its virtues.”

    The new compact took twelve lines. It authorized Iven to document all six fastener positions, destructively remove the chamber-side brace, recover any newly released fastener pieces, and conduct direct imaging of the exposed scar. It authorized nothing beyond the fixture face.

    No load, cue, reset, probe, or approach to E4, U-31-A, or U-31-B was permitted. Any motion transmitted into the mechanism would terminate the work. The removed brace would be surrendered permanently. Replacement required fresh material, a new engraved compact, and Tertia’s explicit consent.

    Mara struck incidental access from the draft. Iven established that loose corrosion would remain part of the scar unless deliberately detached. Tertia required every forbidden boundary to be named rather than incorporated by reference.

    The M-48-C boxed key remained on its original chain in the sealed exterior repository. Mara recorded the repository seal without touching it.

    Mara, Iven, and the Examiner accepted separately. Tertia assented last.

    Stone ribs shifted just enough to form a single-person lane from the west threshold to the painted limit around the fixture. Overlapping barriers continued to cover E4 and both U-31 points.

    Mara carried numbered evidence sleeves, waxed catch cloths, and the compact. The Examiner carried the witness lens and reference sheets. Iven carried the cutting and extraction tools.

    “I authorize Iven to number and dismantle the six positions,” Tertia said. “Mara holds custody from separation. The Examiner witnesses condition and motion. No substitution of roles without fresh consent.”

    “Accepted,” Mara said.

    Iven cleaned nothing. Under the witness lens, he placed removable number tabs beside the six positions and read them clockwise into the record.

    Positions one through four retained intact peened heads and visibly secured the brace.

    Positions five and six did not.

    Their heads were already absent. Short, darkened stubs remained recessed in the fixture, their exposed ends rounded by older oxidation rather than fresh cutting. Neither stub stood proud enough to hold the brace against its present seat.

    “Condition before dismantling,” Mara said. “One through four headed. Five and six pre-existing headless stubs.”

    “Observed,” said the Examiner.

    “Positions five and six remain untouched,” Tertia said.

    Iven photographed all six positions, then set the cutter against position one.

    The first head separated with a restrained metallic sigh. Mara caught it on waxed cloth without letting it strike the masonry.

    “Head one recovered,” she said.

    She placed it in the compartment marked H1.

    The second cut produced brass dust. The dust fell onto a separate catch sheet rather than being brushed from the fixture. Mara enclosed the second head as H2.

    At position three, vibration passed through the removable plate.

    All three stopped.

    Iron dust settled against the painted boundary. Tertia felt the vibration disperse through claimed stone, brief and shallow, without reaching the covered upper route.

    “Visible motion confined to the brace,” Mara said.

    The Examiner checked the fixed references. “No resolved displacement at the fixture face.”

    Iven removed his hands from the cutter.

    “One more ambiguity terminates permission,” Tertia said. “Continue at position three.”

    The third head came free. Mara labeled it H3.

    The fourth cut loosened the brace. Its upper edge shifted outward by less than a sheet’s thickness and settled into the support cradle. A dark line appeared where metal had hidden the fixture.

    “Head four recovered,” Mara said, sealing H4 into its compartment.

    Four headed positions had become four cut heads. Positions five and six remained visibly unchanged.

    Iven placed both hands on the authorized grips and drew the brace straight outward along the permitted axis. Its holes passed over the four newly exposed shanks. An old ridge released with a brief rasp, and the brace came free.

    Cold metal met the padded cradle.

    The four corresponding shanks remained standing from positions one through four. The older stubs at five and six remained lower, darker, and recessed.

    Iven exchanged the cutter for the straight extraction grip listed in the compact.

    He withdrew shank one without rotation.

    “S1,” Mara said, receiving it into the compartment paired with H1.

    Shanks two and three followed. The fourth resisted for half a breath.

    Iven stopped before increasing force.

    “Resistance at four,” the Examiner said.

    “Visible fixture motion?” Mara asked.

    “None.”

    Iven reduced the grip, aligned it with the recorded fastener axis, and drew again. The shank released with a dry snap that sent a small tremor into the cradle but not the fixture face.

    “S4 recovered,” Mara said.

    She held the open fastener packet beneath the lens.

    Four heads: H1, H2, H3, H4.

    Four corresponding shanks: S1, S2, S3, S4.

    Positions five and six remained in the fixture as the same older headless stubs recorded before cutting.

    “The fixture cannot hold its prior application,” the Examiner said.

    “It is less objectionable,” Tertia replied. “Do not confuse that with approval.”

    Under the microscopy lamp, oxidation became dark fields around bright disturbances in the brass. Iven aligned the prior timing image with the exposed scar.

    The broad first compression ended sharply. From its boundary, a polished withdrawal track ran outward exactly 0.60 division, fading as the surfaces separated. Beyond that track, the sharper scar folded the grain inward again.

    “A rebound would continue outward,” Iven said. “This began after withdrawal and moved inward.”

    The Examiner changed the lamp angle and repeated the measurement from a second reference.

    “Withdrawal: 0.60 division. The later 1.10-division movement required renewed inward acceleration. Separate contact established. Driving linkage not established.”

    The finding remained narrow, but the metal had removed one ambiguity. The first contact compressed the face; the surfaces withdrew; only then did the sharper second contact drive inward.

    Mara’s shoulders lowered slightly. “I will accept a narrow truth.”

    “How reckless,” Tertia said.

    Iven laughed once. Mara’s mouth moved before she could prevent it.

    The Examiner remained over the image. “Do not widen the finding because it is welcome.”

    “She specified narrow,” Tertia observed.

    “She also said truth.”

    “Then your objection is grammatical.”

    For several breaths, the chamber contained something other than suspicion. Then Mara adjusted the lamp, and the work resumed.

    Older pale flakes lay beneath oxidized folded grain. Metal had rolled over portions of them, and oxidation crossed their dulled edges. By contrast, the fresh 0.27-division compression from the previous test was clean. Its bright edge cut through the older deformation without carrying pale material into the new fold.

    “Chapter Twenty-Eight deepened the scar,” Mara said. “It did not deposit this residue.”

    The Examiner compared the frames with the sealed baseline record. “Agreed.”
