“The cap stays boxed,” Tertia said.

Mara repeated the condition for the room. “Case U-17 remains shut. Both hasps are closed. My key is on the west evidence board. The Upper Witness’s key is on the east board. Neither has moved since entry.”

The Examiner withdrew his hands from the glass case. “Inspection without contact.”

    “Correct,” Tertia said.

U-17 stood on a separate table from the black cord. Mara described the spacing, then reported the cord’s condition in its brass orientation frame: six measurement marks aligned, support pins touching only their designated points, no puncture, roll, or visible change in twist. Behind her, E4 remained closed.

“I am facing E4,” Mara continued. “The closure strip is whole. Both witness marks align. The bolt indicators remain seated.”

Tertia could feel no pressure crossing the claimed threshold around E4. That did not tell her what the marks looked like. Mara’s report did.

    “Proceed with the residue lamp.”

Level light left the gray-green deposit broad and indistinct. At Tertia’s request, Mara narrated each adjustment as she exchanged it for an oblique lamp.

“Three margins are visible now,” Mara said. “Two are dragged across the outer fibers. The third is narrow, clean, and compressed. It lies between the two arrest creases and touches neither.”

“A possible transfer fold,” the Examiner said. “Lift the entire deposit and compare its composition.”

    “No,” Tertia replied.

“A complete lift gives the strongest material sample.”

    “And abolishes the positional evidence.”

Mara proposed two edge lifts: one from a dragged margin, one from the narrow contact, with the center left fixed in the frame. Tertia withheld consent until Mara specified separate tools, a depth collar preventing either blade from reaching the cord, separate transparent packets, and termination after the second lift.

The consent slate was set with its stone foot flat against Tertia’s claimed floor. Mara read the proposed limits aloud. Through the slate’s pressure pins, Tertia entered her code beneath them:

TWO EDGE LIFTS. NO CENTER LIFT. NO PIN ADJUSTMENT. NO OPENING OF E4 OR U-17. NO THIRD LIFT.

The Examiner, Mara, and the Upper Witness added their marks. Mara reported each mark’s placement before the slate was moved aside.

The first blade passed through the measuring gate. Mara announced the collar number; the Examiner confirmed it, and the Upper Witness compared it with the recorded maximum depth. Mara then described her approach to the dragged outer margin, the blade’s entry, and the point where she stopped short of the center.

The lifted material went directly into packet A. Its blade entered the first isolation tray.

A clean blade took the narrow compressed edge. Mara worked along the contact’s bearing and removed only the depth-collared portion. That sample entered packet B, and its tool went into the second tray.

“The central reference remains on the cord,” Mara reported. “Neither arrest crease has been touched. The six frame measurements remain aligned.”

She lowered a clear cover until its feet met the brass frame. The Upper Witness verified that no part of the cover touched the cord, then locked and sealed it.

Each packet received four evidence marks. Mara applied her own, the Examiner applied his, and the Upper Witness applied an institutional seal. For Tertia’s corresponding mark, Mara returned the slate to claimed stone.

“Packet A is closed,” Mara said. “My seal crosses the packet seam. The Examiner’s overlaps its right edge. The Upper seal overlaps the left. The fourth position is empty.”

Tertia entered the packet number and her pressure code. Under the observation of the other two witnesses, Mara pressed Tertia’s numbered seal into the fourth position.

They repeated the procedure for packet B. Tertia touched neither packet and claimed no knowledge beyond the handling reports, pressure code, and witnessed record.

Mara moved the oblique lamp to boxed U-17. Through the glass, she described a shallow pickup channel and the fresh bright score interrupting the older blackening beside the missing ferrule seat. Packet B was positioned near the case without contact.

“The clean sample’s compressed width matches the pickup channel within the recorded tolerance,” Mara said. “Its bearing aligns with the fresh score on the relay side.”

The Examiner directed two changes in illumination, then accepted the measurements. “Upper-grade pickup dressing.”

    “Grade only,” Mara said.

    “It narrows the source.”

“The compound class,” the Upper Witness corrected. “Not the hand that used it.”

Tertia required that distinction in the finding. The dressing established contact with a compatible Upper-grade pickup surface. It did not establish who applied the dressing, who removed the ferrule, who operated the continuation, or whether any named Upper officer knew it existed.

Geometry supplied one additional boundary. Mara compared the clean residue angle with the two cord creases, the frame marks, and the scored side of U-17. The Upper Witness independently read the measurements aloud.

“The continuation falls within the relay-side sector,” Mara concluded. “The opposite sector is excluded. Without the ferrule, the final bearing cannot be restored.”

“A side, not a path,” Tertia said.

    “Agreed.”

The Upper Witness then called for the authorized closure inventory.

Its sealed folio was brought to the evidence table. Mara reported the folio number and intact archive cord. The Examiner confirmed both before the Upper Witness broke the access seal and signed the opening line.

Entry by entry, the Witness compared the inventory against what she could directly inspect: E4’s bolt indicators, closure strip, saddle lugs, break wire, the boxed key record, the documented alarm cord, and the registered fittings around the relay housing. Mara narrated the inspected positions for Tertia. Nothing was opened or moved.

The Witness read the relevant inventory page twice.

“No pickup shoe is authorized for E4,” she said. “No lateral sensing contact is listed. No relay-side continuation from U-17 is recorded. The authorized closure inventory contains no mechanism corresponding to the sampled contact.”
