    Chapter Index

The third heartbeat moved before anyone touched a seal.

Mara heard it through the floor and shut her eyes for one measured breath. Fatigue had collected beneath them in gray half-circles. One cuff was dark with old sealing wax, and the fingers she held before North Evidence Wall trembled once before becoming still.

The Examiner looked toward the eastern service conduit north of E4. His face remained professionally blank. His stylus did not. Its point clicked twice against the record board.

Around them, the louder work had ended. Chain dragged softly as it settled. Warm wax tightened around old wire. Paper shifted inside closed sleeves. Against those small sounds, Tertia counted three human hearts.

“Hands clear of all mechanisms,” she said through the wall grille. “State injuries before occupancy observation begins.”

Mara stepped back from divided slot 3 and spread her hands. A red line crossed her left palm where a clasp had pinched it.

    “Skin intact. Grip serviceable.”

The Examiner showed both hands. “No injury.”

“Do not make serviceability a condition of remaining,” Tertia said. “The eastern exit is unobstructed. E4 remains closed. No pursuit is authorized.”

Mara flexed her pinched hand, considered the instruction, and moved farther from the wall.

Pressure crossed Tertia’s north floor one plate at a time. The load was careful enough to avoid impact and too heavy to escape old stone. It angled toward the eastern service conduit.

Tertia fed a narrow thread of mana into three neglected floor diaphragms. Sediment resisted their hinges. Hairline pain brightened beneath the north floor, and she reduced the flow before the warped eastern plate could split.

The diaphragms could not obstruct or identify. They could only make weight visible.

The first indicator rose a finger’s breadth. Its peg stopped short of its full travel.

“One undeclared human load moving outward,” Tertia recorded. “Identity, authority, and conduct unproved.”

The second plate dipped. Its baffle shifted across the transfer line and pinned the indicator halfway. Metal dragged along the housing before the pressure reached the final diaphragm.

Then the load crossed the edge of Tertia’s claim and ceased to exist within her perception.

“Two declared human occupants remain,” she said. “One undeclared human load moved east beyond my boundary. Total observed human occupancy for this sequence: three.”

“Presence is not an admission,” Mara said.

Tertia disliked the limit chiefly because it was correct. “Accepted. Presence does not establish identity, lawful capacity, allegiance, or consent to serve as witness.”

The Examiner entered the count and the objection that the old diaphragms had not been independently tested before activation. Mara recorded the interrupted first indicator and displaced second baffle without assigning either condition to the departing load. A prior obstruction or separate mechanism remained possible.

Only after all hands had again been shown clear did Tertia permit the custody work to begin.

“The jaw compartment first,” she said. “External inspection only.”

Divided slot 3 remained closed. Its jaw compartment bore M-66-J across the metal closure and T-66-J across Tertia’s stone seating.

Mara approached no closer than the marked inspection line. She compared M-66-J with its recorded wire path, knot, wax margin, and numbered impression.

    “M-66-J intact.”

Tertia passed pressure beneath the stone seat without shifting it. T-66-J retained its chipped lower corner and shallow right edge. The surrounding stone had not moved.

    “T-66-J intact. Seating unchanged.”

The Examiner observed both inspections and entered them into the record. He touched neither seal.

“No Examiner jaw seal exists,” he read back. “The jaw compartment remains closed under M-66-J and T-66-J. No opening, movement, comparison, testing, sampling, berth audit, or transfer has occurred.”

They added the compartment to the shared custody schedule under those existing controls. The entry imposed the new three-party break procedure without pretending a new chain had begun.

The complete issuing register arrived separately at the outer threshold of the North Records Chamber. The repository custodian displayed the closed case without entering Tertia’s controlled access surface. The Examiner verified the repository ties, both clasps, the archive pin, release time, case description, and source receipt. He then accepted exclusive transport custody and carried it to the receiving table.

Tertia recorded the transfer before allowing examination of divided slot 3’s documentary compartment.

Mara read the existing inventory aloud: “Upper Exchange authorization copy. Continuity Intervention authorization copy. Unanswered demand concerning the missing adapter, witness, register entry, cancellation, or waiver.”

M-66-D remained taut across the documentary closure. T-66-D remained seated in Tertia’s retaining tongue. After the Examiner recorded both conditions, Mara accepted responsibility for breaking M-66-D. She cut its wire and placed the wire, knot, and wax into a marked fragment tray. Tertia withdrew T-66-D under her own control.

Neither action alone opened the compartment.

Mara released the metal latch while Tertia retracted the retaining lip. The Examiner recorded the opening time.

The Upper Exchange sleeve crossed the transfer line first. Mara stated its prior position and visible condition. The Examiner witnessed the transfer. Tertia raised a stone rim around the receiving surface before admitting it.

    The Continuity sleeve followed.

    The unanswered demand came third.

Each remained closed. Each received a separate transfer entry. Only when all three had cleared the compartment did Tertia close the empty documentary retaining lip. The jaw compartment beside it remained occupied and sealed.

The register case was authenticated where it rested. Mara controlled the clasps. The Examiner retained the archive pin. Tertia held the receiving table level and prohibited leaf removal, destructive testing, thread extraction, paste probing, or alteration of the register’s original position.

The Examiner withdrew the archive pin. Mara released the clasps.

Engagement 207 appeared first under Upper Exchange Custody, carrying the issued serial stem and destination mark. A Continuity ending appeared on the questioned authorization copy with the same stem.

The Examiner turned to the authenticated emergency-continuity table.
