Chapter 5: The Answer in the Iron

Nine minutes remained on the registry window.
Nobody spoke. Water moved beneath the chamber floor with its patient, regular drag. The outer custodian kept his palms visible beyond the grille. The masked examiner stared at the accessible registry assembly as though attention alone might force it to confess.
Someone passed Mara a cup. She drank once, returned it, and pressed the heel of her hand against her brow.
“Not proof,” Tertia said through the floor.
The examiner looked down.
“The two impacts were heard and felt,” Tertia continued. “Nothing recorded them. Witnesses are useful. Witnesses also deteriorate.”
Mara’s mouth tightened, whether from fatigue or agreement Tertia could not determine.
“A repeat test,” Mara said. “Instrumented, isolated control, original media preserved. Separate consent before contact.”
The examiner agreed to produce and inspect the apparatus, but reserved the right to reject contamination and limit any finding to what the media showed. The custodian agreed to witness without touching the chamber-side assembly. His cooperation was not to be treated as evidence against his staff.
Mara accepted responsibility for conducting the test.
Then she faced the floor. “Your limit?”
“Nothing attaches to claimed stone without my approval. Nothing crosses the grille. Position five remains untouched. I may stop any contact before it occurs.”
“Accepted.”
Mara opened EX-731 under the examiner’s observation. After both latches had been recorded open, she removed B-12 and a nested instrument packet.
The packet contained three smoked-copper witness plates, each held in a shallow brass frame, and three spring styli. A stylus would rest against the smoked face and scratch a pale track when its mounting vibrated. The entire original plate, rather than a copied impression, could then be collected.
Mara displayed the copper surfaces under angled light. Their soot coatings were dark and unbroken.
“Blank,” said the examiner after inspecting each without touching its face.
“Blank,” the custodian confirmed from beyond the grille.
Their reverse faces were stamped SP-31, SP-32, and SP-33. Mara read each identifier aloud. The examiner entered the numbers before releasing the spring styli from their travel catches. All three points moved freely and returned to center.
Using B-12 against the existing chamber map, Mara identified three placements without making new marks in the stone.
“SP-31 on the chamber-side grille mounting path.”
“Approved,” Tertia said.
“SP-32 on MQ-441’s padded support, without touching its seal bridge.”
Tertia considered the proposed clamp pressure through the stone.
“Reduce the lower jaw by one turn.”
Mara did so and described the resulting clearance.
“Approved.”
“SP-33 on the west-wall control housing, isolated from the mapped position-five path.”
“Approved. Do not activate the control.”
“No activation.”
Mara mounted each frame only after receiving approval. SP-31 rested on the documented grille support. SP-32’s frame touched MQ-441’s padded carrier, leaving every seal, wire, fold, and bridge unobstructed. SP-33 sat on the west-wall control housing with its lever mechanically untouched.
The examiner checked all three stylus points. The custodian watched the grille and SP-31 from the opposite side.
“Quiet baseline,” Mara said.
For twelve seconds, nobody handled the apparatus.
Water movement drew a shallow, wavering feather on SP-31. SP-32 showed a much fainter drift. SP-33 recorded a low lateral tremble corresponding to ordinary building vibration. None produced a discrete impact stroke.
Mara called the interval complete.
At the examiner’s direction, she applied one measured tap to the approved grille-side calibration stud. SP-31 drew a tall pale notch. SP-32 recorded a narrower delayed mark. SP-33 continued its low background feathering without a notch.
She then tapped the calibration stud on the west-wall control housing. SP-33 cut a clear local stroke, proving that its stylus could respond. SP-31 and SP-32 showed no corresponding discrete mark.
The examiner inspected the tracks in place.
“Control is instrumented and responsive,” he said. “No common impact appears across both paths during either local baseline.”
“Recorded,” Mara said.
She returned B-12 to EX-731 without cleaning its dusted edge and closed both latches under observation.
The custodian then shuffled three numbered witness bands beyond the grille. He displayed the resulting order silently. Mara and the examiner copied it independently, folded their records inward, and placed them beneath opposite sides of an evidence weight.
At Mara’s request, the custodian announced a different order aloud.
The examiner recorded the spoken claim without repeating it.
Tertia felt Mara turn toward the floor.
“You choose the challenge,” Tertia said.
The pause that followed was slight but perceptible through Mara’s boots.
“You are surrendering knowledge of the pattern?” Mara asked.
“Temporarily. Not authority over the contact. If I know the pattern, it is less blind. Choose it unpredictably. I retain veto over where and how you strike.”
“Accepted.”
Mara used four interval counters from the examiner’s opaque cup. She drew them without replacement and arranged the resulting pattern behind her open folio. The examiner witnessed the draw from the side and made an independent record. Neither the custodian nor Tertia learned the result.
Mara then fastened the three witness bands in the silently displayed order: first to the west-wall control housing, second to K1, and third to the approved mounting contact nearest the mapped line to position five. She paused before every fastening and described its point and pressure.
