Chapter 76: The Answer Before the Pull
by inkadmin“No test while any authority remains movable,” Tertia said through the slate.
Stone thinned her voice but did not soften the condition. Nothing would begin while anyone outside her chamber retained an unmarked means to open the sector, exchange a tool, alter the route, or interrupt the record.
Mara removed both keys from her belt. She held the first above the witness board until the Examiner identified its cut and stamped number, then lowered it into the custody box. The second followed after a separate identification.
“Both personal authority keys surrendered,” Mara said.
The Examiner recorded their positions rather than merely their presence: first key against the left wall of the box, second crossing its lower third, teeth facing away from the latch.
The Upper Witness kept her institutional key looped around two fingers.
Her attention moved from the sealed sector hatch to the custody box. The chain gave one small metallic sound when her hand tightened.
Tertia waited.
The Examiner’s stylus entered the delay into the record.
At last the Upper Witness unlooped the chain. “Institutional access key surrendered.”
She placed it beside Mara’s keys without allowing the chains to touch.
“Restrain each chain separately,” Tertia said. “A boxed key with a free chain remains movable authority.”
Mara used witness pins to arrange the chains without lifting their keys. Every intended movement was announced before she made it. One chain was extended along the upper edge of the board, the second along the lower edge, and the institutional chain between them. Waxed straps crossed each chain at two points. Pins fixed the straps; warm wax covered the pinheads and received the Examiner’s stamp.
“First personal chain flat,” Mara reported. “No overlap. Four seals clear.”
“Confirmed,” said the Examiner.
“Second personal chain flat. One link rotated at the box edge but fully visible. Four seals clear.”
“Confirmed.”
The Upper Witness inspected her own chain from both sides. “Institutional chain separated. No contact with either personal chain. Four seals clear.”
The Examiner checked the spacing before entering the final confirmation. Any pull strong enough to recover a key would displace a visible link, bend a pin, or fracture stamped wax.
“No participant retains movable key authority,” he read into the record. “Three keys visible. Three chains separately immobilized. Recovery or movement will mark the custody board.”
“Continue,” Tertia said.
Crossed wires went through the relay tool chest latch in opposite directions. Opening the lid would require breaking one wire or twisting both away from their recorded angles. Mara smoothed a tear tongue across the lid seam, pressing from the center outward until no bubble remained. The Upper Witness examined both ends and signed the placement line.
The sector hatch received separate wires and a separate tongue. No chest seal was permitted to authenticate a hatch seal.
Mara then placed the shallow copper-dust cup beneath the hatch hinge. It was filled close enough to the rim that a meaningful movement would spill dust or break its level surface.
“Cup positioned,” she said. “Dust unbroken. Rim clean.”
The Examiner crouched to inspect it from both sides. He recorded the cup, hatch wires, hatch tongue, chest wires, and chest tongue on independent custody lines.
Mara flexed the hand assigned to cut-bar B before setting it beside the bar.
“My authority ends the application without consultation,” she said.
“Correct,” Tertia replied. “If you judge the sacrificial line unsafe, you close the brake. You do not ask me, the Examiner, or the Upper Witness. You do not wait for agreement.”
Mara looked at the bar rather than the slate. “I accept sole stop authority.”
The Examiner recorded her consent. He then obtained direct acceptance from the Upper Witness and from every other person assigned to the chamber. Rank substituted for nothing. Silence counted as nothing.
Tertia gave the final limit only after the last answer entered the record.
“One mechanical application. Three-one-two at the disclosed time. No correction, repetition, or second attempt. E4 remains closed.”
“One application authorized,” the Examiner confirmed.
That authorization did not include moving the black evidence cord, uncovering the residue reference, or opening U-17. Each remained where prior custody had fixed it.
Before the live application, Mara brought the preserved score casts beside the captured metal curls. She rotated the witness board beneath angled light rather than moving either item. Shadows filled the deeper impressions.
Material had been drawn outward around a narrow shouldered jaw. The score lips rose away from the center instead of collapsing toward one another.
“Outward draw,” Mara said. “Shouldered grip. Not opposed crushing.”
The Upper Witness bent closer. “Common pincers would compress both sides.”
“The preserved lips exclude that form,” Mara answered.
Reluctance entered the witness’s expression before it entered her voice. “A narrow ferrule puller would make this geometry. That tool is issued with numbered relay-maintenance kits.”
The Examiner’s stylus paused.
“Tool class and issue category only,” Tertia said. “No kit, custodian, or user has been identified.”
“Recorded without attribution,” said the Examiner.
Nor did the match restore the missing guide ferrule. The tool class could explain its removal; it could not recover the direction the absent piece might have preserved.
Mara withdrew to the prepared pull. A blind screen prevented her from seeing the timing bowl until the Examiner released it. Her right hand remained open beside the input grip. Her left rested near cut-bar B without touching it.
The Upper Witness took the position from which she could see Mara’s hands, shoulders, and feet together. The Examiner stood where one turn of his head covered Mara, the custody board, and the water timer.
Prior evidence had already separated diffuse sound from bounded mechanical loading. Tertia had refused to spend another application proving it again.
The Examiner raised the blind screen.
“Scheduled movement at the tenth drop,” he said. “At ten: three loads, full release; one load, full release; two loads.”
Mara repeated the condition. “Three-one-two at ten.”
“Hands visible until movement begins.”
The first drop struck the bowl.
Tertia felt the timer only as faint impacts transmitted through the claimed stone. The live route was narrower: sacrificial cord, softened collar, prepared pull, and the brake Mara alone controlled. None of it entered E4.
The second drop fell.
