The registry granted fifty-two minutes.
Mara read the authorization aloud from the paper passed beneath the grille. Its permission was narrow: one fixed-plate impression, one comparison, and—if separately consented to—one micro-sample from material already exposed beneath seal 7-41-S.
Tertia felt the minute mechanism begin through the metal seated beyond her boundary. Its first strike traveled into her claimed floor as a thin shiver.
“The plate remains mounted,” she said through the wall. “No instrument alters its seating. The impression must include both registry datum lands.”
Mara repeated the instruction to the outer custodian. Paper rasped beyond the grille. Wax or compound pressed against metal with a low, spreading vibration, then lifted.
The custodian reported that the plate had not moved. Mara received the impression on a rigid board and described it aloud: seven tooth positions, two erased entries, two overlapping authority arcs, and both standardized datum lands preserved at the edges.
“Record condition without attributing either arc,” Tertia said.
A pen began moving at Mara’s table.
The examiner objected. “The surviving curvature may identify an issuer.”
“Then it may do so in another inquiry,” Mara answered. “This record says what is present, not what you hope to infer.”
She read the completed entry aloud. Tertia approved it after Mara added that the original plate remained fixed beyond the grille in the outer custodian’s control.
At the forty-three-minute strike, Mara placed the impression near seal 7-41-S without contacting the collar. She reported that the three internal forms beneath the intact exterior matched the plate’s tooth interval and taper.
The examiner made his own measurement. Metal feet touched the inspection board twice; each contact carried faintly through the floor.
“Correspondence confirmed,” he said. “Ordinary fracture would not produce three repeated forms at those intervals.”
“Enter exactly that,” Tertia said.
Mara did, then read it back. The examiner accepted the sentence but reserved every question of cause.
A tool case opened.
“Stop,” Mara said.
No instrument had touched the seal, but the word halted every movement in the chamber.
“If we remove the grain now,” she continued, “we lose its source orientation. A detached fragment beside an impression proves very little under hostile review.”
The examiner replied after a short silence. “The scar can be measured.”
“Only if its origin was first fixed in a common datum system. I will not defend a guess because the clock encouraged it.”
Tertia considered that professionally reassuring and personally irrelevant.
“Use a keyed frame,” she said. “Two immutable references on the seal mount. Record coordinate, depth, exposed face, and long-axis orientation before extraction.”
Mara asked the examiner to produce a registry measuring frame. Hinges clicked inside the case.
“Frame B-12,” he reported.
“Read its calibration date and registry mark,” Mara said.
He did. Mara repeated both for the ledger, then described the frame for Tertia: a rigid brass rectangle with an asymmetrical capture slide, a depth probe, and two keying surfaces manufactured to the same datum standard as registry plates and seal mounts.
They selected the center of the north mounting rivet as key K1 and the undamaged west stop shoulder as key K2. Both belonged to the fixed mount rather than the damaged compound.
“Confirm neither reference can move without disturbing the mount,” Mara ordered.
The outer custodian confirmed the plate standard through the grille. The examiner confirmed the seal-mount standard inside the chamber.
Mara lowered frame B-12.
Tertia felt the first key touch the mount through the stone beneath it: one precise tap. The second arrived farther west, followed by a brief scrape as Mara tested for play.
“K1 seated on the north rivet center,” Mara reported. “K2 seated against the west stop shoulder. No rocking under light hand pressure.”
The examiner tested it independently. The frame answered through the floor with two opposing taps.
“Properly keyed,” he said.
Mara wrote the key definitions and read them back. Only after Tertia and the examiner approved the entry did she lower the frame’s measuring slide toward the exposed grain.
The probe clicked in increments too fine for Tertia to count. Mara called each result aloud.
“Source center: eighteen point four zero millimetres east of the K2 plane. Seven point two zero millimetres south of the K1 centerline. One point six zero millimetres beneath the intact outer seal datum.”
She continued before anyone could reach for the tool.
“Exposed face is the chamber-facing inner face. Buried face points toward the intact exterior. Grain long axis lies thirty-two degrees clockwise from the K1-to-K2 baseline. Narrow end points toward K1.”
Mara recorded all five facts, then made the examiner measure from the untouched frame.
His probe produced the same sequence of clicks.
“Eighteen point four zero east,” he said. “Seven point two zero south. Depth one point six zero. Inner face exposed. Thirty-two degrees clockwise, narrow end toward K1.”
Mara read the pre-extraction entry aloud.
Tertia found no ambiguity. “Approved.”
At thirty-six minutes, she addressed the injured winchman beneath the brace.
“The proposed act removes one grain from material already exposed,” she said. “The collar and drum will not be moved. Frame B-12 will guide the tool and catch the sample. Do you consent to remaining under the brace during one extraction attempt?”
“One sample,” he answered. “Stop if the timber moves.”
“One sample. Immediate stop upon any movement of the timber.”
Mara repeated his condition and accepted it.
The healer requested admission through inquiry closure for treatment and observation only. Tertia granted revocable access on the existing terms: no authority over evidence, machinery, or another person’s consent, and departure only after a willing replacement accepted the watch.
The healer agreed, then reported that the brace had not shifted and the winchman’s condition permitted the attempt.
Mara locked specimen recess R5 into the frame’s capture slide. She described its asymmetrical shape and keyed notch, which pointed toward K1. The grain could enter in only the recorded orientation and could not rotate inside the fitted recess.
The examiner confirmed that R5 was empty and bore no prior residue.
Mara read the micro-chisel number aloud. The examiner matched it to the tool inventory. She positioned its tip through the guide channel without touching the grain.
“Brace unchanged,” the healer said.
