Chapter 8: After the Last Signature

Examiner Pell crossed one step toward CR-22.

The pressure of his boot reached Tertia through the claimed floor. Vey’s weight shifted at the custody position.

“Hand near the reset screw,” Vey reported.

“Do not.”

Tertia spoke through the designated face in the west wall, opposite the evidence rail and outside its contact path. Nothing traveled through CR-22 except the burden already preserved there.

Pell stopped.

“The reading has changed,” he said. “My first duty is to determine whether the instrument remains sound.”

“The first duty is to preserve the change.”

“A combined gauge can settle.”

“The upper index moved,” Vey said. “I observed it from custody position.”

Mara answered before Pell could advance again. “Examiner, withdraw to your recorded mark.”

Two measured steps carried him back.

“If CR-22 remains under an unexplained burden,” Pell said, “every later reading can be challenged.”

“If you reset it,” Mara replied, “there will be no preserved reading to challenge.”

CR-22 had entered the chamber under Pell’s certification. He had recorded its zero, its controlled holds, and every authorized load. Tertia understood why he wanted immediate control of it.

Understanding was not permission.

“Observation only,” Mara said. “Vey, report the preserved conditions from your assigned position. No handling.”

A lamp chain rasped. Vey adjusted his stance without crossing the marked approach.

“Original seals first,” Mara ordered.

“Seven-forty-three-A intact. Seven-forty-three-B intact. Seven-forty-three-C intact. Stop block pinned. Foot-varnish bridges appear whole.”

“Upper index?” Tertia asked from the west wall.

“The tongue stands two teeth above Pell’s black witness line.”

“Direction?”

“Toward the ceiling.”

That matched Tertia’s passive record of count one hundred seventy-six. The pressure had appeared at the upper contact within her claimed stone before descending into the measured assembly. Above her ceiling cutoff, she had perceived nothing.

No chamber. No mechanism. No hand.

Only the order in which pressure crossed her territory.

“I require independent confirmation,” Pell said.

“You may use Vey’s observer position after he withdraws,” Mara answered. “Neither of you touches the apparatus.”

She marked Vey’s heels, the lamp feet, Pell’s waiting position, and the clear exchange path. Vey withdrew on her count. Pell followed the chalk route and stopped at the observer mark.

“Upper index displaced two teeth toward the upper contact,” he said. “Foot-varnish bridges intact.”

“Could the housing have shifted?” Mara asked.

“Not without breaking those bridges.”

“Upper jaw?”

“The retaining pin would have turned or the jaw witness would have broken.”

Vey reported from his new position. “Pin unchanged. Jaw witness intact. Lower reference and responsive coupling appear unchanged.”

“I concur,” Pell said.

“Current readings.”

“Fixed red indicator nine,” Vey reported. “Responsive white indicator eight. Combined gauge seventeen.”

“Stop block remains pinned,” Pell added.

Paper moved on Mara’s writing board, well clear of the rail.

“We reconstruct from authenticated marks,” she said. “Each participant states only what that participant’s record supports.”

Pell opened his notebook.

“Direct responsive reload completed at count one hundred eighteen. It restored the white indicator to ten and the combined gauge to nineteen. The fixed red indicator remained nine.”

“Final authorized loading action?” Mara asked.

“Yes.”

“Controlled holds before it?” Tertia asked.

“Three counts, two counts, and four counts. No comparable two-division relaxation occurred during them. Those holds do not establish behavior across every longer interval.”

Tertia approved of the limit more than she approved of Pell.

“My boundary record agrees with the reload at one-eighteen,” she said. “Authorized pressure entered the responsive coupling and stabilized. I recorded no later authorized input before closure.”

“Can you distinguish that from boots and writing?” Pell asked.

“Yes. They entered the floor and furniture through different contacts. I certify pressure ordering within claimed stone, not conditions beyond my ceiling.”

“Entered,” Mara said. “Vey, continue.”

“At one hundred twenty-two, the stop block was pinned. Readings remained nineteen combined, nine fixed, ten responsive.”

“At one hundred twenty-nine?” Mara asked.

“Control seals 7-43-A through C completed. Readings unchanged.”

“At one hundred thirty-six, the foot varnish, retaining pin, jaw witness, lower reference, and responsive coupling had been checked,” Pell said. “No recorded change.”

“At one hundred forty-three,” Vey continued, “wax impressions had been pressed on separate tags, numbered, and authenticated. No wax was applied to CR-22.”

Tertia said, “My passive record includes activity at the rail during authentication. It does not include pressure entering through the upper contact or responsive coupling.”

“One hundred fifty-one,” Vey said. “Custody entry prepared.”

“One hundred fifty-nine?”
