F-4-771 remained inside its rigid evidence box. WS-771-4 remained sealed in its separate case, authenticated through cell 207, with cell 208 unused. No one approached either fastening.

The portable saddle lay immobilized in Tertia’s stone cradle. The cradle enclosed its body and every original connection, but a witnessed aperture left two copied contact points accessible: the dummy-gauge socket and the installer-side tongue. Nothing else could be reached without breaking stone.

“Nothing original moves,” Tertia said through the wall. “Nothing opens. If your conclusion requires either, improve the conclusion.”

The Examiner looked past the cradle to Mara. “Before the replay, I challenge custody.”

Mara’s expression did not alter. “On what conflict?”

He placed three records beneath the lamp without touching their marked faces.

“Certified return at eighteen forty-one. Engagement 207 at eighteen forty-two. Your belt-chain receipt at eighteen forty-nine.” His finger stopped beside the last time. “Your present account is intact only if this chain began after the movement we are examining. If you claim it covered the movement, your own timestamp contradicts you.”

One witness inhaled sharply. The other turned toward Mara.

Mara unfastened nothing. “Permission to present the credential and chain for inspection.”

“Granted within the marked table,” Tertia said. “Not granted for anyone to detach them.”

Mara stepped into the chalk boundary. She raised her continuity credential first, keeping it against her coat while the Examiner compared its face, edge cuts, and active mark with the register. The first witness read the credential number. The second read the registered number. They matched.

Next came the belt chain. Mara turned slowly so all three observers could see its route from credential ring to the M-48-C attachment. The Examiner crouched without touching her.

    “Upper link.”

    Mara lifted her arm.

    “Lower turn.”

    She shifted her coat aside.

    “Attachment face.”

She rotated her hip until the numbered face of M-48-C caught the lamp.

The seal lay unbroken across the attachment screw. Its impression matched the register. There was no lifted wax, substituted wire, fresh compression, or scoring around the belt eye. The Examiner checked the reverse through a mirror held by the first witness. The second witness confirmed that the chain remained continuously attached while the mirror passed behind it.

“U-31-A and U-31-B,” the Examiner said.

Mara presented the two closure records without removing them from their linked sleeve. Their numbered seals matched the register. Neither showed a turn, pressure event, replacement, or opening. M-48-C likewise remained closed.

The Examiner straightened. “Those conditions prove the attachments are intact now. They do not prove when your custody began.”

“No,” Mara said. “The timestamps do that.”

    “Then speak every handoff.”

Tertia felt the silence tighten against her stone. Mara could have objected that the earlier interval belonged to institutional custody rather than hers. That would have been accurate and inadequate.

Instead, Mara set her receipt book on the marked table.

“At eighteen forty-one, the return officer certified F-4-771 into the return cradle.”

The first witness checked the return certificate. “Confirmed.”

“At eighteen forty-two, the authenticated wafer records engagement 207.”

The second witness viewed the sealed strip through its case window. “Confirmed.”

The Examiner tapped the empty line beneath it. “Recipient?”

    “None recorded.”

    “Transfer order?”

    “None.”

    “Belt attachment?”

    “Not yet mine.”

    He waited.

Mara continued. “At eighteen forty-nine, the continuity clerk presented M-48-C, U-31-A, and U-31-B to me. I compared all three numbers before accepting them. The clerk sealed M-48-C to my belt attachment in the presence of these witnesses. My credential registered acceptance at eighteen forty-nine.”

“Did you possess the belt chain before that minute?”

    “No.”

    “Did you possess M-48-C?”

    “No.”

“Did you exercise personal control over U-31-A or U-31-B?”

    “No.”

“Can your later chain account for engagement 207?”

    “No.”

The answers landed without ornament. Tertia disliked how much cleaner truth became after someone surrendered the larger claim.
