Receipt 8843 had thirty-one counts left.

Not seconds. Collection liked seconds because seconds sounded natural, impartial, and impossible to argue with. The chamber used valid counts, which advanced only while the comparison field stood empty. An authorized document, hand, witness act, or chamber mechanism stopped them.

Bureaucracy had invented a deadline polite enough to wait for bureaucracy.

The amber display above Chamber Three’s door changed to thirty.

Beyond the sealed grille, Collection said, “The transport frame becomes releasable at lapse.”

Corin kept his thumb over the receipt’s cooling seal. “Your confidence remains admirably inexpensive.”

Neth watched from behind the raised bench, brass lenses spread around her face. “A completed notation entered before lapse can restrict release.”

    “Price it.”

“No monetary fee. Five originals, an authenticated comparison, witness certification, and my seal.”

    “Presentation transfers nothing?”

    “It transfers nothing.”

    “Decides no ownership?”

“It preserves possession, non-waiver, and any ownership claim without deciding title.”

Better. Corin had learned to distrust any sentence in which ownership survived by becoming someone else’s interpretation.

“No enlarged bodily custody,” he said. “No copying, indexing, substitute original, derived record, or inspection beyond comparison.”

    “The curing action grants none.”

    “Put it in the notation.”

Neth began drafting the controlling terms outside the comparison field. While they argued over injury claims, seal liability, authorship, final custody, and personhood, the unoccupied clock spent six counts.

    Twenty-five glowed above the door.

Pell approached the brass-bordered field. “Consent to placement?”

“Placement and certified inspection only,” Corin said. “No delivery, transfer, alliance, rescue, affection, or other expensive misunderstanding.”

Pell’s expression flattened. “You omitted friendship.”

    “I was conserving time.”

With two fingers, Pell guided the custody slip beneath the chamber light while Corin retained its lower edge.

    The count stopped at twenty-five.

Corin added the toe record, Receipt 8843, the Clock Six certification, and the witnessed counterfoil with its Annex Seven index attached. Five seals answered the light in dull red, black, tarnished gold, blue-grey, and the receipt’s nearly colorless sheen.

    The brass lenses turned.

A route unfolded across the ceiling: Gate Twelve, Mortality Spur, Judiciary Descent, Chamber Three. Corin’s passage through the city appeared clean, linear, and bloodless. The projection omitted the four restraints, his swollen ankle, and the shoulder dressing wetting red along one edge. Records preferred injuries after they had become claims.

Neth studied the chain. “Displayed authority: 02:09:00. Source identified as the restricted dispatch ledger.”

“Retrieve the authoritative entry,” Corin said.

Collection’s voice sharpened behind the grille. “That exceeds a curing comparison.”

“The listed authority supposedly permitted you to take me,” Corin replied. “Its date of becoming authoritative seems modestly relevant.”

    “The sequence is not established.”

Neth pressed the retrieval plate. “Which is why the chamber will establish it.”

Chains engaged inside the walls. The retrieval mechanism entered the comparison, keeping the display fixed at twenty-five while sealed ledgers moved behind stone and brass.

    Collection ordered, “Clear the field.”

    “No,” Neth said.

The chains stopped. Four entries struck the glass below her bench:

DISPLAYED AUTHORITY: 02:09:00 CUSTODY ACCEPTANCE: 02:14:12 DESTINATION ARRIVAL: 02:19:03 LEDGER IMPACT: 02:19:41

Pell bent over the originals without taking them. His authorized inspection held the count.

Corin read the entries twice. “Ledger impact follows destination arrival by thirty-eight seconds.”

    “Yes,” Pell said.

“And follows custody acceptance by five minutes twenty-nine seconds.”

Pell’s gaze moved between the custody slip, Clock Six certification, and ledger image. “Yes.”

Neth asked, “Could the ordinary listed route produce this sequence?”

“No. Custody was accepted at 02:14:12. The presented order did not enter the authoritative ledger until 02:19:41.”

Collection answered through the grille. “The displayed authority carries 02:09:00.”

“A time written on an instrument,” Corin said, “is not the time the authoritative ledger gave it force.”

Neth looked to Pell. “Certify only what you can establish.”

“The four timestamps correspond across the five originals and retrieved ledger,” Pell said. “The listed route cannot reconcile them. No alternate authority appears in the presented chain.”

    “Requester identity?” Corin asked.

    “Not established.”

    “Requester motive?”

    “Not established.”

    “Privilege legality?”

    “Not established.”

“Can you swear no unlisted instrument existed?”

    “No.”

Corin nodded. “Facts, then. They have survived better than explanations.”

Neth closed the ledger retrieval. The route faded from the ceiling, but the four timestamps remained impressed on the chamber glass.

Corin collected the originals into his hands. Pell withdrew from the brass border. Once every document, authorized hand, and retrieval mechanism had cleared the comparison field, the clock resumed.

    Twenty-four.

Neth pulled the drafted notation toward her, but did not yet place it under the light. Chamber law required an unbroken empty interval before a retrieved comparison could enter curing form.

    Twenty.

Corin held the five originals against his chest, keeping their seals separated.

    Seventeen.

Collection’s people shifted beyond the door. Metal touched metal.

    Fourteen.

Neth placed the notation sheet into the field. The display stopped.

    Her pen entered beside it.

“Finding,” she dictated while writing. “Collection accepted custody at 02:14:12. The presented transfer order entered the authoritative ledger at 02:19:41. That order cannot, on the record presented, authorize the earlier acceptance.”

    Corin watched every line form.
