    Chapter Index

At 05:59:59, the record border darkened.

The change amounted to one gray line thickening around the recessed display, but conversation died before the second expired. Even the Collection officers near the partition turned their masked faces toward the vacant chair.

The tunnel alarm trembled through the Refuge walls.

Its mechanical shudder passed through riveted plates and exposed pipes before settling into bone. Dust slipped from a seam above the brass heating grille. The recycled air tasted of mineral water, old metal, and too many people breathing inside sealed corridors.

Corin’s restrained ankle throbbed in time with the vibration. The treatment brace kept the joint aligned and him attached to the bench, though not, as he had already made everyone record twice, in anyone’s custody.

Across from him, the reserved chair remained cold despite the grille beneath it. Heat shimmered above the slots without seeming to reach the seat. Its arms aligned precisely with the painted custody marks on the floor. Its blank credential plate faced the official recorder.

    A pressure valve clicked.

06:00:00 — RESERVED SEAT ACTIVATED OCCUPANT: REMOTE LIVING CREDENTIAL IDENTITY: SEALED

The chair’s credential plate lit from within. No face appeared. No body occupied the upholstery. The recorder nevertheless acknowledged a living occupant.

The Collection captain stopped outside the painted boundary.

“Activation submits the convoy to review custody.”

“No,” Corin said before silence could be classified on his behalf.

His palms stayed flat on the scarred bench, every finger visible. “Before anyone acquires us by grammar, what is the price?”

    The captain’s jaw tightened.

Voss answered through the grille beneath the empty chair. Distance and old transmission mesh flattened his voice.

“The remote occupant accepts limited review liability. Activation opens a six-minute objection period. Unanswered demands may become enforceable.”

Limited review liability. Enough language to imply risk, not enough to price it.

    “Record my conditions,” Corin said.

    The border brightened.

“No surrender, ownership transfer, credential submission, bodily custody transfer, or use or consumption of Quill’s sealed copy without a fresh recorded act and the affected person’s consent.”

Thin lines formed around each protected act. The final requirement—fresh recorded act and affected-person consent—received a double underline.

    “Collection objects,” the captain said.

Her objection registered in amber beside Corin’s conditions.

“Preserve that,” Corin replied. “Collection remains sole adverse claimant, not custodian.”

SOLE ADVERSE CLAIMANT: COLLECTION CUSTODIAL STATUS: DISPUTED

The captain read the classification without blinking. “Preserve both statements.”

Amber borders fixed around the objection and answer. Neither consumed the other.

At 06:00:47, a second pane opened beside the remote credential.

AVAILABLE AUXILIARY TEST: UNVERIFIED ECHO TRACE TARGET: REMOTE HANDSHAKE CHANNEL RESULT CLASSIFICATION: PROVISIONAL ACTIVATION EFFECT: UNDEFINED

The last line made Corin’s fingers press harder against the bench.

“What does activation cost mechanically?” he asked.

Voss took long enough to answer that the ventilation completed two dry, rasping cycles.

“Unknown. The trace may read the channel, append to it, or become part of the preserved exchange.”

“May it alter the handshake record?”

    “Undetermined.”

Corin looked at the offered control. A single touch might tell him what sort of Echo had passed through the reserved seat. It might expose the source of the hooked pattern before whoever controlled the endpoint could withdraw it.

It might also write directly into the only admissible record they possessed.

“I cannot predict whether it reads the channel or marks it,” Corin said. “So the price is admissibility.”

The test control remained white and available.

“I decline activation until the handshake has been sealed and copied outside this review.”

UNVERIFIED ECHO TRACE: AVAILABLE — NOT ACTIVATED

Curiosity was an expensive appetite. Corin preferred buying answers to renting them from an opposing record.

Mara’s mouth shifted by the width of a private smile. “A remarkably mature position.”

    “I’m injured, not reformed.”

For one breath, the tension around her eyes eased.

At 06:01:12, the credential plate completed its first handshake cycle.

Air rushed through hidden channels in the chair’s frame with a damp, organic sound. A dark pulse crossed the polished arms from left to right and disappeared into the plate. The central display caught its geometry before the masking field closed.

A hooked line curled beneath the seal, bent back upon itself, and ended in a short downward cut.

HANDSHAKE TRACE: PROVISIONAL PRESERVATION AVAILABLE PROVENANCE PATTERN: 02:14-H COLLECTION CUSTODY ACCEPTANCE: 02:14:08 AUTHORITY-CHANNEL ACCEPTANCE: 02:14:09

    The order held.

Custody had been accepted one second before the authority channel. Whatever office had drafted the intake could not honestly flatten those events into one simultaneous act.

Mara’s hand closed around her sealed duplicate. Protective wrapping crackled inside her fist.

“I know that drafting practice,” she murmured.

The recorder caught the words but did not elevate them into a claim.

Corin watched her rather than the mark. “Name the office?”

    “No.”

Guilt passed over her face too quickly to inventory, but not quickly enough to miss.

He did not press. A coerced answer would be weak evidence and worse company. “Then your refusal is preserved with the rest.”

Her gaze flicked toward him. “You make restraint sound acquisitive.”

“It is. I’m keeping the question.”

Dann touched the final unused face of his certification instrument. A pale grid awakened against his wrist, and the recorder raised a readiness symbol beside his name.
