The old answer remained on the Risk terminal when the turnover bell drew breath.

    EXPERIENCE RELEASE: NONE.

Smaller text beneath it had survived the end of the previous filing:

IMMEDIATE RELEASE DENIED. EARNED AWARD RETAINED UNDER CORROBORATION HOLD.

Corin kept one hand against the cold brass counter. His knee had begun to shake, though the hall had not yet offered a field in which to record that as consent.

Across the partition, the Collection captain guarded her half of the certified receipt. Corin’s matching half lay in the claimant guide. Neither had crossed into the other holder’s custody.

The first vibration of the bell passed through the floor.

At 05:00:00, the civic date changed.

The terminal seized both receipt halves without taking either one. Brass shutters closed over the guides, leaving the papers visible beneath glass while white comparison light traveled across their seals.

A second mechanism engaged under the counter. Receipt stock rasped through heated rollers.

The display replaced the old result line by line.

CIVIC ROLLOVER: 05:00:00 — INDEPENDENT CLOCK CONFIRMED.

    SURVIVING CIVIC INSTRUMENT: VALID.

    CORROBORATION REQUIREMENT: SATISFIED.

HELD RISK ASSESSMENT: 48 PROVISIONAL / HALF-VALUE AWARD DUE: 24 EXPERIENCE.

Mara leaned closer without touching the counter. “There.”

Corin read the next line twice.

    SOURCE ACCEPTANCE LINK: 02:14.

The code identified the acceptance event, not the accepter. The operator field remained sealed.

At 05:00:02, the corroboration hold cleared.

    At 05:00:03, the terminal printed:

    EXPERIENCE POSTED: 24.

Corin’s account band warmed against his wrist.

No level rose. No Mark formed. The Experience entered the account and went nowhere else.

    SPENDING BLOCKED: ACCOUNT IDENTITY DISPUTED.

A white option opened beneath the posting.

    APPLY AVAILABLE EXPERIENCE?

    “No,” Corin said.

    He pressed refusal.

Twenty-four untouched Experience remained on the record, attached to the surviving receipt and the 02:14 source code. It was almost useful, which made it unusually dangerous.

The alarm began before his finger left the key.

Its vibration climbed through the counter into his wrist. Bolts struck the main doors. Shutters dropped over both side passages, and the claimant gate snapped closed behind them.

A strip emerged in sharp increments.

    POSTING TO DECEASED ACCOUNT DETECTED.

    MANDATORY CUSTODY AUDIT OPENED: 05:00:03.

    Then, in darker ink:

CUSTODY OF DECEASED ACCOUNT HOLDER REQUIRED.

Corin’s knee folded. He caught the counter hard enough to bruise both palms.

Mara’s hand stopped a finger’s width from his shoulder.

He straightened without taking it. “Define custody.”

Dann read the compressed line beneath the demand. “Body, attached instruments, and account-bearing evidence.”

    “A modest request for everything.”

A provisional-release panel unfolded. Corin could leave before adjudication if he surrendered both receipt halves, acknowledged Collection’s superior claim, and consented to Collection transport.

The captain read every clause. Then she pressed refusal from her side.

“C-12 purchased notice,” she said. “Not him.”

The Collection clerk opened the service gap and reached through—not for the receipt, but for Corin’s wrist.

The captain blocked the arm with her forearm.

    “No custody basis.”

White leather pressed against her sleeve. The alarm trembled underfoot.

After one measured second, the clerk withdrew.

Corin set his palm beside the claimant guide. “Open contradictory-custody review. Limit it to person status, remains acceptance, morgue intake, account use, and rollover.”

The terminal requested competent routing attestation.

Mara’s expression tightened. She entered her statement one deliberate phrase at a time:

I ATTEST ONLY THAT THE OBSOLETE CONSTRUCTION ROUTES RECEIPT FUNCTION AND ROLLOVER CORROBORATION. IT DOES NOT PROVE OWNERSHIP, BENEFICIAL USE, CONSENT, OR BODILY CUSTODY.

The terminal asked for her source class.

“Withheld,” Mara said, and keyed it in.

Amber warning text framed the statement.

ATTESTATION ACCEPTED FOR STATED FUNCTIONAL SCOPE ONLY.

    SOURCE-CLASS CHALLENGE PERMITTED.

CHALLENGE DEADLINE: 12:00:00, CURRENT CIVIC DAY.

FAILURE TO ANSWER MAY IMPEACH ATTESTATION WITHOUT EXPANDING ITS SCOPE.

Mara looked at Corin rather than the warning. “That is what I am spending.”

    “Noted,” he said. “Not owned.”

Her mouth moved in something too brief to qualify as a smile.

The receipt guides opened. Corin’s half returned through his channel; the captain’s emerged at Collection’s wicket. Both seals remained intact, and each paper returned to its prior lawful holder.

    The terminal began its comparison.

Acceptance stamps and morgue entries raced across the glass. Account closure followed. Then came the 02:14 source event, the 02:19 morgue record, and the independent rollover certification.

The display slowed enough to preserve its findings:

    REMAINS ACCEPTANCE RECORDED: 02:14.
