    Chapter Index

The refuge had written their choices before any of them made one.

Four brass controls burned along the lower gallery wall. Above them, the shared clock showed 03:38:14. Below it, the acceptance route remained open.

    LINKED CUSTODY PACKAGE: PENDING.

    UNANSWERED EXPIRY: 03:42.

Beyond the buckled stone, a living hand clung to Corin’s fingers.

The copper airway tube lay beside his wrist, flattened where the aperture pressed against it. He worked the bellows one-handed. Every breath he forced through produced a weak answering tremor from the trapped worker.

    “Read mine,” he told Dann.

Dann could not approach the docket. He knelt beneath the cracked brace, one shoulder holding its warning cord taut while his writing board rested against his thigh. If the cord slackened, Sera had said, the fractured roof would lose its only visible measure.

    He read from Corin’s control.

“Acceptance transfers final authority to withdraw, correct, or amend your identity to the Orison Municipal Settlement Receivership, Black and Ninth Office.”

    “Including my death entry?”

    “Including all linked identity entries.”

    “Bequest?”

    “Not opened by this term.”

    “Elian safeguard?”

    “Remains sealed unless separately accessed.”

Corin pumped another breath into the darkness. “No witness access. No Bequest communication. No authority over anyone else.”

    Dann checked the text. “Correct.”

    “I refuse.”

The control struck once beneath Corin’s palm.

REFUSAL ENTERED: 03:38:19. CONTESTED REVIEW LIMITED TO THIS CONTROL.

The acceptance field vanished from his station. New lettering replaced it.

IDENTITY CONTROL: MAINTAIN AIRWAY. RECOVER LINKED RECORD.

A shutter snapped open beneath the brass, exposing a narrow guide for the copper tube.

Sera looked from it to Corin’s trapped arm. “That was prepared for this aperture.”

“Perhaps the wall has developed professional admiration.”

    “Pump.”

    Corin pumped.

    Mara’s control brightened next.

She remained at the manual winch, one boot braced against its base and both hands around the bar. Two chalk lines marked the cable’s safe range. Leaving the drum untended would surrender the fraction of clearance already won.

    “Read,” she said.

    Dann did.

“Acceptance transfers final amendment control to the Receivership. You retain continuing defect liability for incorporated amendments and incorporation errors.”

    “After they take final control?”

    “Yes.”

    “Do I retain appraisal authority?”

    “Only as a subordinate source.”

Mara’s expression became commercially pleasant. “Then they may purchase their own mistakes. I refuse.”

REFUSAL ENTERED: 03:38:31. CONTESTED REVIEW LIMITED TO THIS CONTROL.

Her brass plate divided into load bands.

APPRAISAL CONTROL: LIMIT ANCHOR LOAD. ADVANCE TWO TEETH. ROTATE LINKED RECORD FLAT. DO NOT SEVER.

Mara looked down at the hidden slate tether stretched beneath the worker’s forearm.

“That instruction knew what was under the slab.”

“Noted,” Dann said. “Preparation established. Authorship not inferred.”

The warning cord bit deeper into his shoulder as the roof shifted.

    His own station opened.

    “Terms,” Corin said.

Dann read without looking away from the brace.

“My certification standing guarantees admissibility of the linked record. Correction liability survives after final control transfers elsewhere.”

“So if their record is wrong?” Mara asked.

“I guarantee it can be used, and I remain answerable for correcting what I no longer control.”

“A dignified form of theft,” Corin said.

“Most forms are, once certified.” Dann drew a breath. “I refuse.”

REFUSAL ENTERED: 03:38:46. CONTESTED REVIEW LIMITED TO THIS CONTROL.

A measuring needle rose beside the warning cord.

ADMISSIBILITY CONTROL: PRESERVE CONTACT, TIME, AND DECLARATION. IDENTITY CERTIFICATION NOT REQUIRED.

Dann glanced at the needle. “It anticipated the roof measure too.”

The fractured support plate dropped a finger’s width.

Inside the bracing frame, the Collection captain caught it on both forearms. Iron rang against her vambraces. She could not free either hand for her control.

“Voice entry permitted,” Dann said. “Your terms guarantee delivery to the prefiled Receivership route and subordinate Collection priority to that route.”

    “My external jurisdiction?”

    “Remains active but subordinate.”

    “My adverse claim?”

“Linked and prevented from controlling delivery.”

The captain’s boots slid through the grit.

“I refuse the delivery guarantee. I refuse subordination of Collection priority. I grant no ownership, custody, route, or command concession by supporting this aperture.”

    Her control accepted the declaration.

REFUSAL ENTERED: 03:39:02. CONTESTED REVIEW LIMITED TO THIS CONTROL.

DELIVERY CONTROL: HOLD APERTURE UNTIL SECURED TRANSFER. TEMPORARY SUPPORT CREATES NO CUSTODY CONCESSION.

    The four stations struck together.

The shared acceptance clock went black.

LINKED ACCEPTANCE ROUTE DISABLED. FOUR SEPARATE REFUSALS VALIDATED. SILENCE, LABOR, PROXIMITY, DELAY, AND ROUTE USE DO NOT CONSTITUTE ACCEPTANCE. FOUR BOUNDED REVIEWS REMAIN AVAILABLE.

A narrow duplicate receipt slid from Dann’s station. He trapped it beneath his writing board before dust could touch the ink.

    ALL FOUR REFUSALS RECEIVED UPSTREAM.

    The recipient field was sealed.

“Remote party confirmed,” Dann said. “Identity unavailable.”

    “Preserve it,” Corin said.

“I had planned to eat it.”

    “Then preserve the crumbs.”

Sera slapped the wall twice. “Acceptance problem contained. Rescue deadline remains. Two minutes fifty-eight.”

Corin brought his mouth near the crack. “Worker, can you hear me?”

    A cough answered. “Hear.”

“We have your harness. A linked slate is trapped beneath you. Cutting it improves speed. Recovering both adds load. Choose.”

    The fingers tightened around his.

    “Both.”

    “Choice witnessed,” the captain said.

Dann recorded it. “The worker directs recovery of person and linked slate. Nobody answers on their behalf.”

Mara leaned toward the cable. “Two teeth available. A third tears the anchor eye out.”

    “And half a tooth?”
