Chapter 36: The Blank Chooses
by inkadminAt 06:03:22, the demand had two minutes and thirty-eight seconds left.
The contactor beneath the appeals table struck once. Amber climbed the timer’s rim, bruising the glass.
Dann had divided the comparison into three channels: credential, custody, and selection. None touched the empty square where a body would ordinarily be entered.
PARTICIPANT LIMITS AVAILABLE.
Six clauses appeared before the Collection captain. She reviewed them without crossing the preservation bar.
VISIBLE SUBMITTED INSTRUMENT ONLY.
Selected.
SYNCHRONIZED RESULTS VISIBLE TO COLLECTION.
Selected.
NO CONCESSION OF CREDENTIAL OWNERSHIP.
Selected.
ADVERSE CLAIM PRESERVED OUTSIDE THIS INSTRUMENT.
Selected.
NO CUSTODY ACQUIRED THROUGH WITNESS PARTICIPATION.
Selected.
Her finger stopped over the final clause.
NO DESIGNATION OF A BODY WITHOUT SEPARATE AUTHORITY.
Corin watched the language rather than her face. His ankle pulsed inside the treatment brace, each beat arriving slightly after the contactor’s.
“That answers the dispute,” he said.
“It may prejudge it.”
“It prevents you from discovering that proximity has been doing legal work without a license.”
She replaced the final clause with RESERVED PENDING RESULT.
Corin checked the assembled limits. Nothing surrendered his credential, conceded ownership, or permitted restraint to become consent.
“Accurate enough to be dangerous,” he said.
The captain confirmed.
Dann sealed the clauses as participation boundaries rather than testimony. Chalk whispered beneath his cramped fingers as he closed the three channels around them.
02:22.
The terminal exposed the damaged section of the synchronized 02:14 intake. Two live-weight entries stood on either side of a missing subject field. Pale continuity marks crossed the gap unevenly.
A question appeared for Mara.
CLASSIFY ALTERATION WITHOUT IDENTIFYING ACTOR.
She held her sealed duplicate against her chest. “Subject-separation removal.”
The terminal unfolded her answer.
ORIGINAL INTAKE CLASS: MULTI-SUBJECT. REMOVED FIELD: SUBJECT DISTINCTION. SURROUNDING MEASUREMENTS: RETAINED. NEIGHBORING FIELDS: REINDEXED ACROSS REMOVAL. CONTINUITY STAGGER: ONE COUNT. ALTERATION ACTOR: NOT REQUIRED FOR METHOD CLASSIFICATION.
Displayed lines compared the closure marks before and after the missing distinction. One path ended a count later than the other.
The scar brightened.
02:04.
DOES THE SCAR INVALIDATE THE SURROUNDING LIVE-WEIGHT ENTRIES?
“No,” Mara said. “It prevents attribution between subjects. It does not erase either measurement.”
Her duplicate remained closed, its seal turned inward beneath her palm.
The terminal bounded both answers to method testimony. No historical admission accompanied them.
The captain spoke before the next prompt could settle. “Can the drafting practice identify the office or person responsible?”
Mara gave her nothing.
One stroke sounded beneath the table.
Then a second.
On the third, the silver contact beneath the glass flashed.
Her fingers tightened around the duplicate. “The practice is familiar. Actor, office, motive, and historical circumstances are outside my submission.”
01:50.
“Fraud provenance is relevant,” the captain said.
“To an inquiry authorized to take it,” Corin replied.
“It may determine whether the entries deserve reliance.”
“It may also determine what you would like to ask next. Appetite is not scope.”
The captain’s expression did not change. That was one of the more expensive advantages of professional hostility.
Dann looked between the surviving measurements. “The immediate question is reconstructability.”
The timer reached 01:43.
“Can this intake reconstruct the removed subject distinction?” he asked.
“No,” Mara said. “Not from the surviving intake alone.”
Dann traced the boundaries of the damaged field. “Both measurements can remain admissible without assigning either measurement to a named subject. The removed distinction cannot be restored, borrowed from custody, or inferred from present bodies.”
The terminal acknowledged his answer.
Corin pointed to the captain’s unanswered provenance inquiry. “Does this comparison require an office, employee, motive, or historical admission to test those measurements?”
“No.”
“Then preserve the refusal, exclude the identities, and prohibit reconstruction by proximity, restraint, possession, or silence.”
SCOPE RULING RECEIVED.
Dann began sealing at 01:31. Mara’s classification, the three recorded strokes, her bounded refusal, his reconstruction finding, and Corin’s ruling entered separate compartments. Nothing opened her duplicate or enlarged her submission.
By 01:17, the first seal had closed.
The terminal registered the two surviving entries as candidates for independent admissibility while leaving attribution unresolved.
At 01:12, the captain’s reserved clause returned beside them.
Corin said, “Collection cannot select between admissible bodies under this instrument.”
“No. That could be read against authority outside it.”
A substitute formed from her existing limits and the visible record.
COLLECTION CANNOT PRESENTLY DISTINGUISH WHICH ADMISSIBLE 02:14 LIVE-WEIGHT RECORD THIS INSTRUMENT DEMANDS AND WILL NOT DESIGNATE ONE WITHOUT SEPARATE AUTHORITY. NO BROADER CLAIM IS WAIVED.
The captain read it once. It preserved her broader pursuit while denying the instrument permission to use her as its missing selector.
She pressed ACCEPT.
Dann sealed the attestation conditionally, pending both admissibility findings.
“Useful restraint,” Corin said.
“Calculation.”
“I would not insult it by calling it sympathy.”
The terminal moved into preliminary verification. Static exclusions lit around the empty selector field: no submitted name, no physical index, no authorized custody priority, no consent from presence, and no participant designation. They were recorded now, before the active search began.
Mara watched Dann close the remaining evidentiary compartments.
“You declined useful leverage,” she said quietly.
“Counterfeit leverage. High maintenance, poor resale value.”
“You might have learned who altered the intake.”
“I might have taught this instrument that your refusal was negotiable.”
Her gaze rested on him for a measured second. “Those are not the same concern.”
“No. Mine is presently admissible.”
The corner of her mouth moved once.
At 00:36, Dann finished the synchronized seal. Credential, custody, and selection remained distinct; the captain’s limits attached only to her participation; Mara’s duplicate remained outside the frame.
The remote endpoint opened above them.
REMOTE REVIEWER ENDPOINT: CONNECTED. IDENTITY: SEALED. LAWFUL SELECTOR MAY BE SUBMITTED UNTIL EXPIRATION.
