    Chapter Index

The bolt moved six inches and stopped.

Iron screamed behind the barrier. The sound cut across the evacuation cadence—three low pulses, a pause, then three more—and ended in a concussion that shook grit from the tunnel roof.

Corin’s neutral frame corrected beneath his chair.

Twenty feet uphill, Local Compositor 7-A clicked inside its own frame. The locked shelf followed on the third, five originals rattling behind brass mesh. Nothing joined the frames except the route’s synchronized control, but the sloping floor was trying to teach them different opinions about downward.

A voice came through the barrier’s speaking grille, flattened by metal reeds until age, sex, and accent were equally useless.

“Outer bolt is loaded. Living release is available. Present passage authority.”

The Collection captain stepped toward the barrier. Her hands remained visible and clear of every frame.

    “Collection is sole adverse claimant.”

    “Claim is not passage authority.”

    The captain’s mouth tightened.

Corin looked at the widening crack along the tunnel floor beside the shelf’s front wheel. The masonry was sinking by fractions. The frame had begun compensating faster than the shelf could settle.

Mara saw it too. Her hands stayed at her sides.

    “Permission?” she asked.

    “Not yet.”

The shelf’s left upright gave a thin metallic tick.

Corin took his claimant identifier from his lap. “Barrier, open a bounded emergency-stabilization entry attached to the continuous exhibit.”

A brass plate slid from the wall beside him.

    EMERGENCY RECORD AVAILABLE.

    ADVANCE AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.

SPECIFY ACTOR, CAPACITY, OBJECT, CONTACT, AND EXCLUSIONS.

The alarm struck again. Heat came through the barrier seam in a dry breath carrying hot oil and scorched stone. The current traveled uphill, away from whatever waited below.

Corin pressed his identifier to the plate.

“Actor: Mara Quill, acting solely in her previously admitted independent capacity. Object: the locked evidence shelf’s neutral frame. Permitted contact: left forward upright above the axle housing and lower rear frame rail below the sealed cabinet.”

Mara glanced from the named members to the crack opening under the wheels.

“No mesh,” Corin continued. “No locks, cabinet, contents, originals, output, chair frame, compositor frame, route controls, or attached seals. Purpose limited to keeping the shelf frame upright and aligned while its own neutral drive crosses the barrier.”

    “Duration?” the plate asked.

“Until the rear wheel enters the receiving channel, or until Mara revokes consent.”

Mara nodded once. “I consent to those contacts for that purpose and duration. I may release either contact if continuing would endanger me.”

The plate recorded her words in white lines.

    “Rights exclusions?” it asked.

“No custody, ownership, possession, provenance, salvage interest, inspection right, opening right, copying right, escort authority, claim transfer, claim expansion, capacity merger, substituted consent, or obligation beyond the stated act.”

The shelf upright ticked a second time.

The captain watched it bend by less than the width of a fingernail. Calculation crossed her face before urgency could become generosity.

“Collection preserves its adverse ownership claim,” she said.

Corin looked at her. “Seal the limitation with it.”

“You are in no position to demand concessions.”

“I am in an excellent position. It merely happens to be descending.”

    The floor jumped.

Mara shifted her weight but did not reach for the shelf.

A second depression opened on the brass plate, shaped for an adverse seal.

The captain removed Collection’s instrument. “Collection preserves review of every admission and route limitation. For this emergency record only, Mara Quill’s specified contact does not independently establish handling, custody, escort, seizure, substitution, possession, provenance, ownership, or expansion of Collection’s adverse claim.”

“Add that Collection receives none of those capacities through her act,” Corin said.

The captain studied the shelf, then the barrier. An invalid exhibit would leave her with authority over rubble.

    “Accepted.”

She pressed her seal into the depression.

    ADVERSE CLAIMANT ENTERED.

    CLAIM PRESERVED FOR REVIEW.

NO PRESENT COLLECTION HANDLING AUTHORITY CREATED.

NO CAPACITY ACQUIRED THROUGH AUTHORIZED STABILIZATION.

Corin kept his identifier against the plate. “Activate.”

    BOUNDED STABILIZATION ACTIVE.

    MARA QUILL: INDEPENDENT CAPACITY PRESERVED.

CONTACT LIMITED TO TWO SPECIFIED SHELF-FRAME MEMBERS.

    ORIGINALS AND SEALED CABINET EXCLUDED.

The left wheel dropped into the crack.

    “Now,” Corin said.

    Mara moved.

Her right hand closed around the left forward upright above the axle housing. Her left caught the lower rear rail beneath the cabinet. She touched exactly what the record named and nothing else.

The shelf tilted toward the barrier.

Mara planted one boot against the floor seam and hauled the frame upright. Metal strained through her arms. The brass mesh remained a handspan from her shoulder.

“Rear compensation is failing,” she said.

Dann stood beside the shelf without touching her or it. The hexagonal instrument at his neck showed one dead-gray face and one face as clear as clean glass.

    “Passive witness channel,” Corin said.

Dann lifted the instrument where the wall plate could read it.

    INSTRUMENT STATUS:

    CERTIFICATION FACES SPENT: 1.

    CERTIFICATION FACES CLEAR: 1.

    PASSIVE WITNESS CAPTURE AVAILABLE.

Dann turned its clear face toward Mara’s hands. “Witnessing the authorized contacts, the absence of contact with the mesh, and the captain’s sealed limitation. No certification offered.”

    PASSIVE CAPTURE ACCEPTED.

    CERTIFICATION CONSUMPTION: NONE.

The last clear face remained transparent.

Behind the barrier, something heavy slammed into a retaining catch. The bolt advanced another foot. No hand, sleeve, face, or silhouette entered the opening.

“Living action ready,” the flattened voice said. “Present linked authority.”

A second plate unfolded beyond the bars. Corin could see only its light reflected on the opposite wall.

He held his identifier to the local plate.

“Continuous exhibit consists of three separate neutral frames under synchronized destination control: claimant chair, Local Compositor 7-A, and locked shelf containing five sealed originals. No physical coupling. Topological relation preserved by the admission chronology.”

    The remote plate struck once.

    COUNTERSEAL CONDITION REVIEWING.

    LIVING ACTION CONFIRMED.

    CONDITION SATISFIED BEFORE ADMISSION.

    NOT AN OUTSTANDING REQUIREMENT.

HOLDER IDENTITY: SEALED BY BRANCH ORDER.

HOLDER ALLEGIANCE: SEALED BY BRANCH ORDER.

PRIVATE TERMS: SEALED BY BRANCH ORDER.

    AUTHORITY: PASSAGE AND WITNESS ONLY.

    Corin read it twice.

The missing counterseal was no longer missing. The person attached to it remained as usefully invisible as every institution preferred its decisive hands to be.
