The gate opened a handspan and asked what Corin was willing to lose.

Not in those words. Machinery preferred longer sentences when attempting theft.

A line of white text burned across the inner brass leaf.

PREFILED DESTINATION RECOGNIZED. CONTINUOUS EXHIBIT PRESENT. ADMISSION AVAILABLE SUBJECT TO INSPECTION, REVOCATION, AND CYCLE DISPOSITION.

Three neutral frames waited before the threshold. Corin’s ordinary chair occupied the central one, clamped at four points without any restraint added to his body. The locked shelf and its five originals rested on the left frame. Sealed Local Compositor 7-A occupied the right, its municipal stamps unbroken and its ports shuttered.

Mara stood beyond the compositor with her external control in both hands. Dann held his certification bar level beside the shelf. Behind them, the Collection captain and four officers filled what remained of the passage.

Corin looked at the narrow opening.

    “The full price,” he said.

The gate widened by another finger.

ADMISSION GRANTS DESTINATION CONTROL OF MOVEMENT WHILE WITHIN THE ROUTE. ADMITTED PARTIES AND BURDENS MAY BE ISOLATED UNTIL CYCLE DISPOSITION. RETURN PASSAGE IS NOT GUARANTEED AFTER PENDING EXECUTION.

    A second line followed.

ADMISSION IS REVOCABLE FOR CAPACITY BREACH, UNAUTHORIZED HANDLING, UNRECORDED TRANSFER, OR ATTEMPTED DIVISION. REVOCATION DOES NOT CONVEY TITLE, CUSTODY, SALVAGE INTEREST, IDENTITY INTEREST, OR CONSENT.

Better than most civic offers. It described the knife before asking him to lean on it.

“What rights does the destination retain over the exhibit?”

MOVEMENT, INSPECTION OF EXTERNAL SEALS, PRESERVATION OF RECORDED SPATIAL RELATIONSHIPS, AND ISOLATION PENDING CYCLE DISPOSITION.

“What rights does it not retain?”

The captain’s nearest officer shifted. She silenced him with one raised finger.

    Text accumulated across the brass.

NO RIGHT TO OPEN, ALTER, COPY, CONSUME, RECLASSIFY, DIVIDE, ENCUMBER, OR TRANSFER THE CONTINUOUS EXHIBIT. NO RIGHT TO COMPEL DISCLOSURE OF EXCLUDED PROVENANCE. NO RIGHT TO SUBSTITUTE ONE PARTY’S CONSENT FOR ANOTHER’S.

Corin’s cheek had begun bleeding again. A thin warmth reached his jaw, irritating chiefly because the gate had omitted it from the inventory.

    “And Local Compositor Seven-A’s output?”

The right frame clicked once beneath the sealed machine. A narrow inspection beam crossed the housing, read every intact stamp, and withdrew.

OUTPUT IS AN INTERNAL PRODUCT OF THE PRESERVED CONTINUOUS EXHIBIT. NO SEPARATE RECIPIENT, BENEFICIARY, OR TRANSFER DESTINATION IS RECOGNIZED.

Dann glanced at Corin. Hook fourteen, if they survived long enough to call it that, had just died cleanly.

“The challenge protection,” Dann said. “Does its language identify a sponsor?”

The gate examined his bar without touching it.

PROTECTION LANGUAGE IS NEUTRAL PROCEDURAL TEXT. IT IDENTIFIES NO CHALLENGE SPONSOR, PRINCIPAL, OR SEPARATE REPRESENTED PARTY.

Dann breathed out through his nose. Another manufactured shadow removed from the record.

    Corin returned to the price.

    “Can admission alter the locks?”

    NO.

    “Can it join the frames?”

NO PHYSICAL COUPLING REQUIRED OR AUTHORIZED. SYNCHRONIZED MOVEMENT DOES NOT CREATE COMMON CUSTODY.

    “Can it separate them?”

NOT WHILE CONTINUITY CONDITIONS REMAIN SATISFIED.

That was almost reassuring, which made Corin suspicious.

“Who decides whether they remain satisfied?”

THE RECORDED CONDITIONS DECIDE. BREACH MUST BE MECHANICALLY DEMONSTRABLE AND ENTERED IN THE ADMISSION CHRONOLOGY.

No unnamed clerk. No concealed discretionary hand. The gate could revoke admission, but only by accusing them in writing.

Corin looked toward the darkness beyond the brass leaf. “Pending execution?”

    SEVENTEENTH REPLACEMENT EXECUTION.

    “Effect?”

DISCLOSED UPON ADMISSION TO THE EMERGENCY ROUTE.

“An undisclosed consequence is not a price.”

    The opening stopped widening.

For three breaths, nothing moved except the blood at Corin’s jaw.

    Then the gate yielded.

KNOWN EFFECT: ASCENDING ACCESS MAY BE SEALED. DESCENDING ROUTE MAY CONVERT TO ONE-WAY ISOLATED CONVEYANCE. ONE LIVING AUTHORIZATION IS REQUIRED BEYOND THE LOWER SEALED TURN. IDENTITY WITHHELD BY BRANCH ORDER.

There it was: a living counterseal, present but unnamed.

    “And the opener?” Corin asked.

A black mark appeared beneath the text—a split ossuary crown, its second half struck through. Dann’s attention sharpened.

    ROUTE-OPENING SIGNATURE: VALID.

AUTHORIZATION FAMILY: MATCH CONFIRMED TO CERTIFIED MISSING INTERVAL.

A final line surfaced and locked before any personal mark could appear.

OPERATOR IDENTITY SEALED BY BRANCH ORDER.

Dann raised the certification bar, presenting an unused face toward the gate. “Record the signature validation, family continuity, and identity seal in sequence.”

    CERTIFICATION FACE WILL BE CONSUMED.

    “Yes.”

The bar warmed in his hands. Fine grooves pressed themselves into the soft receiving layer: recognized destination, inspection rulings, opening signature, authorization family, branch-order seal.

The individual remained buried. The authority did not.

Corin looked at Mara. “Your turn, if you want one.”

The gate’s inspection beam crossed her external control and halted over its closed shutters.

EXCLUDED PROVENANCE DETECTED. HOLDER CLASSIFIED AS INDEPENDENT PARTY. SEPARATE PRIVATE ADMISSION TERMS AVAILABLE.

A seam opened across Mara’s control. No text appeared on the gate. Whatever it offered existed only behind her shutters, angled for her eyes.

Corin turned his chair as far away as the clamps allowed. Dann studied his certification bar. Even the captain redirected her attention to the threshold.

    Mara read in silence.

Her face revealed nothing until the end, when one corner of her mouth hardened. She closed the shutters herself and pressed her thumb against the private seal.

“I refuse the separate terms,” she said.

    The gate responded at once.

REFUSAL RECORDED. PRIVATE OFFER SEALED WITHOUT ACCEPTANCE, TRANSFER, OR DISCLOSURE.

“I request entry in my own capacity,” Mara said. “Revocable under the public conditions only. My provenance remains excluded. My control remains in my physical possession. No connection to the compositor.”

ACCEPTED. INDEPENDENT REVOCABLE ADMISSION. NO PROVENANCE DISCLOSURE. NO CONTROL TRANSFER.

Corin did not ask what she had refused. He wanted to. Wanting was not permission.

The gate shifted its inspection toward the Collection uniforms.

COLLECTION CAPACITY INCOMPATIBLE WITH EXHIBIT HANDLING.

One officer stepped forward. “We hold an active recovery—”

    “Quiet,” the captain said.

The beam divided across all five Collection personnel.
