    Chapter Index

The neutral night docket operated through a soup hatch.

Someone had scratched NIGHT FILINGS into the refuge kitchen’s brass shutter beneath an older menu offering onion broth for two bits. Steam breathed through the seams. Overheated docket oil sharpened the smell, and gears behind the wall had begun the heavy preliminary clicks that meant civic midnight was close.

Corin limped toward the hatch with EX-19 folded inside his coat. His braced ankle supplied a private countdown with every step.

The service grille had already descended halfway.

Dann caught its lower edge before it closed. “Filing.”

A narrow-faced docketer looked through the shrinking gap. Flour marked one cheek; gray sleeves had been rolled above both elbows. “Then arrive.”

Corin put his shoulder under the grille beside Dann. Mara seized the side handle. Even the Collection captain added one gloved hand after calculating that lateness would serve nobody’s objection.

Together they forced the shutter high enough to lock.

Mara inspected the soup ladle hanging behind the counter. “If that authenticates evidence, I withdraw.”

“First determine whether it acquires a custodial interest,” Corin said. “We should not malign specialized equipment.”

The tower sounded its warning note.

    Three minutes remained.

“Object, remedy, custody,” the docketer said.

“Portable paper extraction 02:14-H, sequence EX-19. Bounded noncustodial verification of surface marks, continuity, established witness chain, present possession, and protected receipt priority. I retain physical custody. No deposit.”

“One-brass opening bond. Credited if examination proceeds.”

Corin set down the coin but kept one fingertip on it. “What does it purchase?”

“A timestamped filing and provisional stay. No examination, custody, title, or access.”

He withdrew EX-19 and rested one folded edge against the presentation line without crossing it.

    “Presented, not transferred.”

    The opening seal struck.

    The chronometer stopped at 23:59:47.

“Filing opened,” the docketer said. “Timestamp and stay survive midnight.”

The first bell rang thirteen seconds later.

The grille trembled as the midnight mechanism recalculated, but it did not close.

    “Price,” Corin said.

“Six brass total for surface verification, including the bond. Twelve additional for bounded continuity review. Eighteen brass. Identity-path or resource-trace expansion requires three silver and temporary deposit.”

“Collection will fund expansion,” the captain said.

    “How charitable,” Corin replied. “Declined.”

    “You prevent an ownership finding.”

“I prevent an ownership inquiry. The distinction is worth considerably more than three silver.”

Coins two through six purchased visible marks, timestamps, four-point reader contact, and nonretention. The docketer recorded each term before Corin unfolded EX-19 along its existing creases.

He kept two fingertips against the upper margin while four edge clamps descended onto the bare corners.

Gold light passed through the paper.

“Neutral exchanger issue. EX-19. Visible related sequence ends EX-17.”

“Record the missing sequence without assigning fault,” Corin said.

The captain’s answer came immediately. “And that absence does not establish wrongful custody.”

    “Also accurate.”

The hooked 02:14-H mark surfaced beside the extraction time. When the reader withdrew, Corin paid coins seven through nine to open continuity review and define Mara’s comparison scope.

Mara produced her sealed record but did not approach the bed yet. From another pocket she removed a stiff black comparison cover with one narrow viewing slot.

She held it out to Dann.

    His hand stopped short. “Terms?”

“You have custody of the cover, not my record.” Mara’s voice lost its usual commercial ease. “Keep it between my sealed fields and every reader, hand, or line of sight except while I expose the authorized window. Do not widen the slot, inspect beneath it, lend it, or use it to claim access. Keep that boundary through the filing and the meal. Return it when the meal ends, unless I request it sooner.”

    “I accept those limits.”

Only then did she release the cover.

Dann did not examine its hinges or turn it over. He placed it exactly where Mara indicated while she retained both hands on her record.

“My record remains separately possessed,” she said. “I authorize comparison only of the 02:14-H mark, timestamp structure, and limited witness standing. No contents, ownership trail, or sealed terms.”

The reader descended over the exposed window. Amber lines linked the two papers, paused, then locked around the hooked mark.

“Geometry, pressure order, timestamp structure, and instrument defect match,” the docketer said. “Separate possession preserved. No common ownership found.”

Mara withdrew her record. Dann moved the cover with it, blocking the sealed fields before the reader could clear them.

Coins ten through thirteen purchased import of the established witness chain.

“No new authentication,” Corin said. “Read the existing record.”

The docket pins shifted. Chapter 37’s countersigns rose across the plate: Dann’s spent certification face, Mara’s independent standing, and the captain’s Collection countersign, all linked to the completed extraction.

One source line briefly rendered DANN ARRO. The registry checksum overlaid it:

DANN ORREL — REFUGE EXCHANGE OFFICER SOURCE RENDERING DAMAGE: NAME NORMALIZED BY EXISTING REGISTRY CHECKSUM NO IDENTITY EXPANSION PERFORMED

Dann did not touch a plate.

The docketer read the imported certification. “Existing face covers bounded extraction, neutral closure, and resulting handoff. Present testimony may be admitted if it remains inside that role.”

Mara looked at Dann before answering. “It does. He prevented access to sealed identities, took no possession of my record, and did not expand comparison when I refused it. His statement concerns the same extraction and delivery.”

Dann kept his attention on the comparison cover. “Mara’s evidence remained separately held. Her limits defined what entered the chain; they did not interrupt it.”
