    Chapter Index

The sealed response rested beneath Corin’s right hand, its paper folded once around a civic thread and closed with Bay Three’s black seal. Receipt 8843 lay behind it. Under both, cold except at its heat-embossed end, sat the narrow metal account strip copied during verification.

Three records. Two required for escape. None available for donation to administrative convenience.

Corin checked the rest by touch.

Original one beside his sternum. Two and three in separate inner sleeves. Four and five together near his left hip. The Bequest plate in its own pocket. Collar CA-7C/19-044 wrapped in his torn cuff.

    Everything remained where it belonged.

Acquisitiveness was merely caution with a complete inventory.

The carriage smelled of hot brass, blood, and sealing wax. Corin’s left ankle had swollen until the boot felt built around a second, less cooperative joint. His shoulder wound had reopened during verification; warmth crept beneath his shirt whenever he breathed too deeply.

Above the central display, a slot opened.

    Bay Three printed a chronology.

Corin left the strip in its tray and read as the lines emerged.

    SHUTTER ACTIVATION: 18:44:09

LIVE CHALLENGE ACCEPTED: 18:51:51 RESPONSE LOCK ACKNOWLEDGED: 18:51:51

Below those entries, the record divided into concurrent actions.

COLLAR INSPECTION AND TESTIMONY INGESTION CONTINUED BOUNDED VERIFICATION COMPLETED: 18:53:09 COPIED ACCOUNT STRIP FORMED: 18:53:10 HEAT EMBOSSING COMPLETED; COOLING INTERVAL COMMENCED: 18:54:02 SHUTTER LOCKING SEQUENCE CONFIRMED: 18:54:41 COPY PROVENANCE SEAL COMPLETED: 18:55:17

    The final line arrived alone.

    SUBSTANTIVE SEALED RESPONSE ISSUED: 18:55:18

Three minutes and twenty-seven seconds separated acceptance from judgment.

Not an idle delay. Not an immediate substantive reply, either.

At 18:51:51, Bay Three had accepted the challenge and locked itself against a conflicting disposition. Inspection, verification, formation of the metal copy, cooling, and shutter locking had continued inside that provisional acknowledgment. Only when those acts completed had the bay issued the paper response now under Corin’s hand.

The chronology did not improve what had happened. It merely prevented anyone from improving it later.

Across from him, the driver studied the paper seal.

    “That is the answer?”

“That is the finding,” Corin said. “The earlier answer was only that the bay had agreed not to pretend it hadn’t heard me.”

    The outer speaker clicked.

“Collection directs continued closure of all public exits.”

The driver looked toward the shutters. “They found us.”

“They knew which bay contained the carriage.”

    “That distinction comforts you?”

“No. It charges by the word.”

A hum passed through the speaker while a second instruction authenticated.

“Collection authorizes the established remains-transfer route. No forced entry requested.”

Of course not. Breaking Bay Three after a live challenge would produce damage accounts, repair witnesses, and a recorded seizure. Waiting at the only lawful outlet looked cleaner.

Collection had not abandoned control. It had chosen the version least likely to testify against it.

Corin lifted the sealed response enough to read its governing finding.

RESPONSIVE SUBJECT RETAINS CONTESTED STANDING. SUBJECT AND ATTACHED CHALLENGED EVIDENCE SHALL BE CLASSIFIED AS DISPUTED REMAINS IN LAWFUL TRANSIT PENDING DESTINATION REVIEW. PRE-REVIEW SEPARATION NOT AUTHORIZED.

The phrase responsive subject was almost generous. The remaining language was useful, which mattered more.

He touched the request plate with his left fingertips.

“Apply the sealed finding issued at 18:55:18. Display the release class governing disputed remains and attached challenged evidence.”

    Relays moved behind the wall.

Three classifications appeared. The first surrendered attached property before transit. The second placed remains and effects in provisional Collection custody. The third read:

DISPUTED REMAINS IN LAWFUL TRANSIT—ATTACHED CHALLENGED EVIDENCE RETAINED BY CURRENT POSSESSOR PENDING ADJUDICATION.

“Costs, waivers, and custody changes,” Corin said.

“Zero resources,” Bay Three answered. “No waiver. Bay Three assumes mechanical custody for one passage. Possessory custody remains with the disputed remains. Collection custody is not created by passage.”

    The driver’s mouth twitched.

Corin regarded the display. “The law remains committed to flattering me.”

It did not call him alive. It did not have to. The sealed response bound the bay to move him without separating the evidence from its current possessor, even when that possessor was also the remains.

“Verify every effect presently attached to me. Identify any object requiring separation.”

    A pale scanning bar descended.

Corin kept his right hand over the sealed response, Receipt 8843, and the metal strip. Light crossed the black paper seal first, then reflected sharply from the copy’s narrow metal face. The heat-embossed end answered with a dull red pulse.

The five originals responded independently beneath his coat. Receipt 8843 warmed. The collar flashed blue through the cuff.

When the scan reached the Bequest plate, the wall displayed a separate notation.

ATTACHED PERSONAL INSTRUMENT: ONE. NONSEPARABLE DURING TRANSFER.

    The evidentiary count followed.

ATTACHED EVIDENTIARY OBJECTS: NINE. FIVE SEALED ORIGINALS. RECEIPT 8843. COLLAR CA-7C/19-044. COPIED METAL ACCOUNT STRIP. SEALED RESPONSE ISSUED 18:55:18. NONE SEPARABLE DURING TRANSFER.

Nine evidentiary objects, plus the separately registered Bequest plate. Ten carried objects in total. No omissions disguised as grouping.

    “Authorize?” Bay Three asked.

    “Read limitations.”

“One completed passage under the established remains-transfer route. Destination governed by previously entered route instruction. Mechanical custody terminates upon completed delivery.”

    Corin distrusted previously on principle.

“I authorize that classification for one passage. I do not consent to Collection custody, destination selection, medical intervention, evidentiary separation, or any additional restraint.”

    The bay repeated every limitation.
