Chapter 51: Before the Fifth Lock
by inkadminThe terminal remained dead while they argued over who would profit from waking it.
Its activation line was black. The external registry lead lay severed beside the wall, its cut ends sealed under Dann’s witness tape. Inside the terminal, Collection’s machine-native cartridge remained installed beneath a locked brass cover.
The captain set her C-12 custody token beside that cover.
“One operation,” she said. “Restricted local diagnostics. The cartridge will compare the certified finding already exposed through this token. It will not consume another activation, reopen the origin registry, or issue a second query.”
Dann examined the cartridge lock, the black activation line, and the sealed registry lead. He recorded each condition on an undivided gray receipt master.
“No new power source?” Corin asked.
“The refuge supply only.”
“No substitute cartridge?”
“No.”
“No later claim that maintaining your own equipment was consideration furnished to me?”
The captain’s mouth tightened. “No.”
“Good. I dislike surprise generosity. It invoices badly.”
Corin kept his sealed Echo trace beneath his coat. Until the price existed in writing, it would remain there.
The master before Dann was designed to become two identical receipts. Every stroke of his stylus darkened paired chemical fields on either side of the future dividing line. Nothing had been stamped. Nothing could yet be separated without displaying an incomplete instrument.
Dann looked to the captain. “State Collection’s consideration.”
“Collection receives one half of the final symmetric receipt,” she said. “If the comparison produces a certified adverse result, Collection may attach that bounded result to its existing institutional file.”
“Which file?”
“The file associated with the C-12 package.”
“Not a new account file under my name.”
“Not authorized by this instrument.”
Corin waited. The captain knew he was waiting.
She continued. “Collection receives no possession of Vale’s source, no retention right, no access to the sealed contents, no derivative query, and no right to reuse the trace or the comparison route.”
“No sampling,” Corin said.
“No sampling.”
“No reconstructed source.”
“No reconstructed source.”
“No broader inference from whatever you attach.”
“The attachment will state only the certified bounded result and its listed limitations.”
Dann entered the terms across the paired fields. When he finished, he rotated the undivided master toward Corin.
The consideration was meager. That made it believable. Collection would gain an adverse fact it could preserve and cite, but not the object from which the fact arose.
In return, Corin would receive the matching receipt half and a chance to attach admissible corroboration to his provisional Risk record. A chance, not a promise. The machine might prove nothing. It might certify a fact too narrow to help him. It might collapse from professional exhaustion, an impulse Corin increasingly respected.
“Accepted as Collection’s complete consideration?” Dann asked.
The captain read the paired clauses. “Accepted, subject to the hidden-field restrictions.”
“Those come next,” Corin said.
Dann placed the C-12 token in a shallow inspection frame rather than the terminal cradle. The frame exposed only the token’s certified schedule band. Most of its markings were ordinary custody limits. Four angular strokes near the lower edge were not.
Mara leaned over the frame.
Her patched appraisal glove stopped above the token without touching it. “That grammar is obsolete.”
“You said that about the routing reservation,” Corin replied.
“This is the same family, not the same clause.”
“Meaning?”
“It separates custody proof from beneficial use.” Her attention followed the four nested marks. “The evidence can survive after the allotment becomes unusable.”
Dann shifted the inspection lamp. A final schedule mark emerged beneath a worn certification scar.
Mara read it first. “Revocation on effect of death writ. Next civic day.”
The room contracted around the words.
Corin had been cold for so long that his body had reduced discomfort to accounting. Fingers: unreliable. Ribs: painful. Legal existence: absent. Now the city had supplied the last item with a time column.
The captain studied the token. “That condition was not part of C-12’s exposed adverse finding.”
“It is in the certified schedule band,” Dann said. “Reviewing the token before comparison has disclosed it, but has not independently tested it.”
“Then it cannot be stated as an independently verified fact,” Corin said.
“No,” Dann agreed. “It can be included as a disclosed condition bound to the comparison schedule.”
“And the consequence?”
Mara answered without looking up. “When the death writ takes effect, any possible beneficial use of the prefiled allotment ends. The custody proof does not vanish. Neither would a certified comparison already completed.”
The captain’s gaze moved from Mara to the token. “Collection’s attachment survives revocation?”
“If the master says so,” Dann replied.
Corin watched Mara’s hand. Her thumbnail had pressed hard enough into the patched glove to whiten the leather.
“You have seen that separation before,” he said.
“I have seen the grammar.”
“Where?”
Her hand withdrew from the frame. “Not here.”
“That answer is becoming expensive.”
“I know.”
No apology followed. Corin preferred that to a cheap one, which did not make the refusal easier to forgive.
Dann pulled the undivided master back and wrote the revocation clause into both linked fields:
SCHEDULE CONDITION DISCLOSED BEFORE COMPARISON: THE REFERENCED PREFILED ALLOTMENT IS MARKED TO REVOKE NEXT CIVIC DAY UPON EFFECT OF CORIN VALE’S DEATH WRIT. THIS CONDITION MAY BE CONFIRMED ONLY AS PART OF THE BOUNDED COMPARISON AND IS NOT PRESENTLY AN INDEPENDENTLY TESTED FACT. REVOCATION ENDS ANY POSSIBLE BENEFICIAL USE OF THE ALLOTMENT BUT DOES NOT ERASE THE CERTIFIED COMPARISON RESULT, THE RISK CORROBORATION, OR COLLECTION’S AUTHORIZED ATTACHMENT.
